The Epiphany of the Lord TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Before long, people will be throwing Mardi Gras beads in the streets of New Orleans—purple, gold, and green. A few will be in on the secret: the colors of the beads are derived from the gifts of the magi. Gold for wealth, purple for power, green for good health. The gifts are also a key to the identity of the Christ Child: the incense for God; the gold for a king; the myrrh, fragrant burial ointment for one who comes to die. Centuries ago, today’s feast bore the heavy burden of celebrating all the manifestations of Christ’s identity: the birth of Jesus, the coming of the magi, the baptism of the Lord, the wedding feast at Cana. It was too much for one day. Fortunately the one day has blossomed into a whole season of grateful celebration, stretching behind us into Advent, and ahead of us into the Baptism of the Lord and to Christ’s coming again in glory. Tonight, be sure to light the Christmas lights, and gather at the crèche for a favorite carol and a prayer. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Solemnity of the Epiphany of Our Lord Star dust. It turns out we are all made of it. Almost every element on Earth was formed at the heart of a star. How? When a massive star explodes, carbon, oxygen and nitrogen are released into the universe, providing the building blocks for planets, and plants, and human life. Everything in us is formed from residual stardust, and here’s the best part: you have stuff in you as old as the universe. So consider this: when those passionate astrologers saw that Star, might it have been the stardust in them, routed into them through eons, from the day God spoke the world into being, that shouted out, “We recognize You! We are made from You! We have literally longed for You, in every cell of our being, from the beginning of time!” Each of us carries those Wise Men in our own DNA. We too are made of the stuff that sees the Star and says, “Yes, I was made to seek You and find You. Nothing in my life will ever satisfy me until I do.” And so I ask you, Star gazers: where do you feel the most completely yourself, the most utterly at home? Allow yourself this epiphany: only by knowing what you know for sure will you ever truly find the peace that comes from God, who formed the world from the beginning of the beginning. If you are breathing, then you are stardust, and you won’t feel at home until you find the Star. Joni Mitchell had it right: We are stardust, we are golden, we are billion year old carbon. And we’ve got to get ourselves back to the Garden.

In what ways do you sense that you belong to God? Kathy McGovern ©2019 www.thestoryandyou.com

MANY THANK YOUS!!

There are so many things that have happened to give thanks for! The Social Concerns Committee sends a huge thank you to everyone who gave so generously to The Giving Tree. 31 children’s jackets were delivered to Gabriel House and 95 pair of socks, 20 pair of gloves, 2 hats, 1 sweatshirt and 3 packs of cough drops were delivered to The Homeless Shelter. Both agencies were so grateful! The Women’s retreat Over 30 women were blessed with a wonderful spiritual retreat given by Angelina Hubert. We are so very grateful for this time and treasure. The Knights gave us such joy and great food at their “Keep Christ in Christmas” luncheon. Thank you from all of us!! Last but definitely not least, thank you to all who set up, worked, donated, and shopped at our wonderful Christmas Market. It was a huge success bringing in $4,046.61. It brought the joy of Christmas and fellowship to our beautiful parish.
