PASTOR´S MESSAGE
AN INFORMED VOTER IS A RESPONSIBLE VOTER
Primary Election Early Voting Underway
The U.S. bishops remind us, "In the Catholic Tradition, responsible
citizenship is a virtue, and participation in political life is a moral
obligation.” (Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship, USCCB, 2011)
To help parishioners become informed on where candidates stand on key
issues, the Florida Conference of Catholic Bishops has polled those
running for office in the U.S. Congress and the Florida Legislature. To see
how candidates on the August 14 primary election ballot responded to
the questionnaire, visit
http://www.flaccb.org/CQP/2012/candidates.html.
The Florida Catholic newspaper offers a brief explanation of each of the questions asked and provides links to candidates'
websites to assist with further research.
Early voting is now underway in all Florida counties. Florida is a closed primary state. In most cases, if you wish to vote in
a partisan primary election, you must be a registered voter of the party for which the primary is being held. All registered
voters, regardless of party affiliation, can vote on non-partisan candidates.
For early voting locations and times in your county, visit:
http://election.dos.state.fl.us/pdf/Early_Voting_Sites_Primary_2012.pdf
I would like to pass on to all parishioners this Faithful Citizen voting information.
As we all prepare to exercise our right to vote, I would like to suggest that we approach voting
as an act of discernment.
Discernment implies that we familiarize ourselves with the issues and the positions of the candidates and
that we consider them within the context of faith, the Bible, Church teaching and prayer. In that manner
we will succeed in integrating our faith with the important freedom of voting in a democracy.

AUGUST 12 l ST. JOAN OF ARC l 7
The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven at the end of her earthly life is a defined
dogma of the Catholic Church. The Feast of the Assumption, celebrated every year on August 15,
is a very old feast of the Church, celebrated universally by the sixth century. It commemorates the
death of Mary and her bodily assumption into Heaven, before her body could begin to decay--a
foretaste of our own bodily resurrection at the end of time. Because it signifies the Blessed Virgin's
passing into eternal life, it is the most important of all Marian feasts and a holy day of obligation.
The feast was originally celebrated in the East, where it is known as the Feast of the
Dormition, a word which means "the falling asleep." The earliest printed reference to the belief
that Mary's body was assumed into Heaven dates from the fourth century, in a document entitled
"The Falling Asleep of the Holy Mother of God." The document recounts, in the words of the
Apostle John, to whom Christ on the Cross had entrusted the care of His mother, the death, laying
in the tomb, and assumption of the Blessed Virgin. Tradition places Mary's death at Jerusalem or
at Ephesus, where John was living.
On November 1, 1950, Pope Pius XII, exercising papal infallibility, declared in "Munificentissimus
Deus" that it is a dogma of the Church "that the Immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary,
having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory."
As a dogma, the Assumption is a required belief of all Catholics; anyone who publicly dissents from
the dogma, Pope Pius declared, "has fallen away completely from the divine and Catholic Faith."
While the Eastern Orthodox believe in the Dormition, they object to the papal definition of the
dogma, seeing it as unnecessary, since belief in Mary's bodily assumption, tradition holds, goes
back to apostolic times.

“PRAYERS FOR RELIGIOUS LIBERTY” NOW PART OF A NATIONWIDE PRAYER CAMPAIGNThe Administrative Committee for the United States Conference of Catholic
Bishops (USCCB) is calling for a nationwide prayer campaign for the protection of
religious freedom and conscience rights. To support this effort, the USCCB has
developed prayers sources in both English and Spanish. These can be found on
the diocesan website at www.diocesepb.org. Look on the center of the home
page for the “Religious Freedom and Conscience Protection” image. Click on that
image for the prayers and the latest information related to the U.S. Department
of Health and Human Services (HHS) healthcare mandate that virtually all private
health care plans must cover sterilization, abortifacients, and contraception. This
section also provides other helpful links and provides information that can help
you gain a better understanding of this threat to religious freedom. For the latest
information, please continue to visit this page plus the “Bishop’s Statements” sec-
tion at www.diocesepb.org
VOTE TO PROTECT RELIGIOUS FREEDOMThe faithful of the Diocese of Palm Beach and Floridians have an
opportunity this November to take direct action towards the protection
of religious freedom by voting ‘yes’ on both Amendments 6 and 8. Amend-
ment 6 protects taxpayers from funding services against their conscience by
prohibiting public funds for abortion and requires parents to give their consent
in order for their child to obtain an abortion. By preserving time-honored public-
private partnerships, Amendment 8 eliminates discrimination against churches
and religious organizations that provide social services. It provides that neither
the government nor any agent of the government may deny to any individual
or entity the benefits of any program, funding, or other support on the basis of
religious identity and belief. For more information on these amendments,
please visit the Florida Conference of Catholic Bishops at www.flaccb.org. If
you want to sign up for advocacy and action alerts, look at the Take Action sec-
tion of the site and click on Join The Network and/or Grassroots Action Center.
Information can also be found on the diocesan website www.diocesepb.org.

Cristo mismo.
