Deacon Ray, who recently celebrated his 35th anni-versary of ordination to the Diaconate, announced his re-tirement. To thank him for his 35 years of service to St. Justin Martyr Parish, please join us at a reception in Dea-con Ray’s honor on Sunday, May 25th, at 9 a.m. in O’Connor Hall.

Happy 56th Anniversary St. Justin Martyr Parish! It was on May 25, 1958, that Fr. Hugh O’Connor, our founding pastor, said the first

Mass in St. Justin Martyr Parish. Sunday Masses were said in a warehouse on Lincoln Ave. (shown on cover) until our new church was built the following year. Weekday Masses were said in a converted garage of a nearby house. Thank you to our founding parishioners and to everyone who has continued to be a part of our growing parish.

Next Sunday, June 1, we celebrate the Ascension of the Lord.

The Bishops of the Western United States have exercised their option again this year to transfer this feast from Thursday to the following Sunday.

First Reading -- The people of Samaria accepted the word of God preached by Philip; they received the Holy Spirit (Acts 8:5-8, 14-17).

Psalm -- Let all the earth cry out to God with joy (Psalm 66)

Second Reading -- Act with gentleness and reverence toward all, so that when you are maligned those who defame you will be the ones put to shame (1 Peter 3:15-18) or 1 Peter 4:13-16.

THE POWER OF THE SPIRIT Do you recognize the sacrament that is cele-

brated in today's first reading from the Acts of the Apostles? When Peter and John imposed hands on those who had been baptized, they received the Holy Spirit in the sacrament of confirmation. The reading from the First Letter of Peter and the pas-sage from John's Gospel both consider the results of our baptism and confirmation. Peter reminds us it is likely that we will have to suffer for what we be-lieve.

In today's Gospel Jesus speaks clearly about the Holy Spirit, referring to a "Paraclete," one who will stand with us to defend us. Poignantly, Jesus prom-ises his disciples, and all of us, "I will not leave you orphans." He has never left his followers orphaned. We have always had the Holy Spirit to guide us. Copyright (c) J. S. Summer Bible School for Grades 1-6 St. Justin Martyr SRE program will have a one

week Summer Bible School from June 23-27 from 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. for children in grades 1-6. This will be a time to get familiar with some of the stories in the Bi-ble, to sing, make crafts, pray and play.

There is a $15.00 registration fee to cover the craft materials, snacks, and school supplies. Please register as soon as you can so that we will know if we will have enough students to begin this year’s program. Registration forms are available in the SRE Office and the Parish Office. The deadline for registration is June 9. For information call the SRE Office at 714-535-6111.

SRE Registration, Grades K-8 The School of Religious Education is having registration for

classes beginning in September 2014 for all students in Kindergarten through 8th grade. Forms have been mailed home to those who are attending at present. Students now enrolled must re-register for the 2014-15 year. Forms for those who will be beginning in September 2014 are available in the Religious Education Office. After June 30th registration is on a space available basis only.

The registration fee is applicable each year. Registration fees are: $80.00 for 1 student, $125.00 for 2 students, and $150.00 for 3 or more students. No one is turned away who is unable to pay. However if this is the situation please contact the Director of Religious Education.

Confirmation Year 1 (and high school First Communion) Orientation

All students entering the 9th -11th grade in September 2014 who have been baptized and have or need to receive their First Communion are eligible to begin a 2 year preparation process for Confirmation/1st Holy Communion. Orientation meetings are being offered for those students and their parents on the following dates and times.

At these meetings you will receive more information about the St. Justin Confirmation preparation process. Attendance to a meeting does not imply a decision to participate in the Confirmation process; rather it is an opportunity for eligible students to get information needed to help make that decision. Registration forms will be available for those who decide to begin preparing in the fall of 2014 for Confirmation. It is necessary for both the student and parent to attend one of these meetings. Attending one of these meetings is a requirement for anyone interested in the preparation for Confirmation. REFLEXIONES SOBRE LA PALABRA Transmitir la alegría del Evangelio

Hechos 8:5-8, 14-17 Uno de los helenistas dispersados es Felipe. Felipe acude a Samaria, donde realiza muchas señales y milagros y tiene mucho éxito. Pero este primer momento misionero es insuficiente. El Espíritu llega con la visita de Pedro y Juan desde Jerusalén. Simón el Mago, que era el gran triunfo de Felipe, cree más en el dinero y quiere comprar el Espíritu. Para Feli-pe, esto es un fracaso y hay un segundo momento de evangelización. 1 Pedro 3:15-18 Cuando las personas santifican a Cristo no es que hagan santo a alguien que ya lo es, sino que reconocen el señorío de Cristo sobre la vida y la historia humana y le rinden honor. Un modo concreto de llevar a cabo la santificación de Cristo por parte de los cristianos es estar siempre dis-puestos a dar explicación a todo el que pida razón de su esperanza. Dar razón de su esperanza es poder dar un testimonio verbal de quienes son los creyentes y en que se apoyan. La esperanza en Dios llena de sentido las expectativas del tiempo presente y la perspectiva de futuro de los creyentes. Juan 14:15-21 Las obras que realizara el creyente son la evangelización del mundo. Ello será posible porque Jesús va al Padre. El don es el defensor, el paráclito. La finalidad del envío del paráclito es que este con los discí-pulos siempre para llenarlos y darles valor para su testimonio y su mi-sión evangelizadora. Esta finalidad está justificada en el contexto del anuncio de la marcha de Jesús.

Nuestra cultura Las vidas de los misioneros nos fascinan y nos conmueven. Pero la

conciencia de ser misioneros y evangelizadores por nuestro propio bau-tismo quizá no esté tan desarrollada. En esta nueva situación migratoria, es urgente avivar tal conciencia para las comunidades católicas en Esta-dos Unidos (compuestas por todos) sean verdaderamente evangelizado-ras.

Reflexiones para la homilía Para muchos, ser cristiano podría significar simplemente una

tradición, un hábito que se ha adquirido de padres, abuelos, y la co-munidad que nos rodea. “Siempre” hemos sido cristianos, por así decir. Vamos a Misa, cumplimos los mandamientos y vamos a la Iglesia los días más señalados; pero, como bautizados, somos mucho más que eso y la responsabilidad es mucho mayor. La Iglesia vive para anunciar a Jesucristo y, por tanto, todos los seguidores de Cristo son misioneros por naturaleza.

¿Qué quiere decir esto? Decir que la Iglesia nace para la misión es afirmar la propia naturaleza de Dios. Si Dios es amor, el amor tiene que ser transmitido. No se puede amar sin un objeto del amor. El amor, que es la naturaleza de Dios, tiene que ser conocido y anun-ciado. Muchas veces nos imaginamos a los misioneros como seres extraordinarios que van a países lejanos a anunciar el Evangelio, a menudo enfrentándose a muchas dificultades y peligros. Y eso es maravilloso, ciertamente. Pero la misión de Dios no está reservada a unos cuantos seres valientes y extraordinarios. La misión de Dios es el anuncio del Reino de amor, justicia y paz de Dios. Y eso es cosa de todos los que hemos sido bautizados, y por lo tanto vivimos en el amor de Dios.

La Evangelización no se refiere a la razón de ser la Iglesia, y por consiguiente de todos sus miembros. Lo cual quiere decir que no podemos ser cristianos sin ser evangelizadores. ¿Qué quiere decir esto para aquellos de nosotros que no podemos salir de nuestro país, y pensamos, por tanto, que no podemos anunciar el Evangelio a quie-nes aun no conocen a Cristo? Lo cierto es que muchos de nosotros sí que hemos salido de nuestro país y hemos traído fe, cultura, tradicio-nes y valores a un nuevo país. Esa fe, cultura, tradiciones y valores, si de verdad son del Evangelio como creemos, deben ser transmiti-das: en la familia, en la comunidad, en el trabajo, en la vida diaria y en todas nuestras relaciones. ¿Qué puede significar evangelizar con la vida, dar testimonio de Cristo en nuestra vida? Pues, sencillamen-te, hacer las acciones de Jesús, de misericordia, compasión, ayuda a quien lo necesita. Significa tomar decisiones que están de acuerdo con la verdad y la justicia, aunque sean difíciles. Significa buscar en todo momento el bien de los demás, aunque para ello haya que re-nunciar a algo propio. Significa sanar heridas antiguas, de resenti-miento y amargura. Significa, en las relaciones diarias, escuchar al otro como si no hubiera cosa más importante en el mundo; dar tiem-po y esfuerzo porque los demás estén mejor.

Evangelizar no es otra cosa que dejar pasar la luz de Jesús a través de nosotros, para que el ser cristiano sea creíble para todos. Eso es dar razón de nuestra esperanza; es decir, vivir de una manera que otros puedan ver que tiene sentido entregarse y vivir en alegría. Que la vida tiene sentido porque no se queda en lo que es material y pasajero, sino que mira mucho mas allá. Para nosotros los hispanos en este país, esta misión común a todos los cristianos se nos hace, si se pudiera, una responsabilidad aun más urgente. Como nuestros números van creciendo dentro de la Iglesia católica, tenemos que responsabilizarnos del futuro de esta Iglesia. Tenemos que tomar la iniciativa al servicio de toda la Iglesia de Estados Unidos—no solo de la comunidad hispana—; por lo tanto, tenemos que formarnos como misioneros: personas que se han encontrado con Jesús, lo conocen y no pueden reprimir la alegría de la salvación, no la pue-den guardar para sí mismos, es decir, tienen que transmitir la alegría del Evangelio, como nos ha dicho recientemente el Papa Francisco.

Confirmación 1 (Primera Comunión) Orientaciones Todos los estudiantes que entraran al grado 9 al 11 en septiembre de 2014 y

que han sido bautizados y han recibido o necesitan su Primera Comunión son elegibles para comenzar un proceso de preparación de 2 años para la Confirma-ción/Primera Comunión. Habrá una serie de reuniones para los estudiantes y sus padres en las siguientes fechas y horarios programados.

Durante esta tarde, usted recibirá más información sobre nuestro proceso de preparación para la Confirmación de San Justino. La asistencia a una reu-nión no implica una decisión de participar en el proceso de confirmación, sino que es una oportunidad para los estudiantes elegibles para obtener la informa-ción necesaria para ayudarle a tomar esa decisión. Los formularios de inscrip-ción estarán disponibles para aquellos que deciden comenzar a prepararse para la Confirmación en el otoño de 2014. Es necesario que el estudiante y los padres asistan a una de estas reuniones. Asistir a una de estas reuniones es un requisito para todos los interesados en la preparación para la Confir-mación. El próximo 12 de Julio del presente, unirán sus vidas en el santísimo sacramento del matrimonio las parejas formadas por: El Joven Luis Iván Adres con la Srta. Bianca Peralta.
