SPDSA looking to bui ld on st rong indoor Adult Program The SPDSA is continually looking to
expand and grow soccer with the
Sherwood Park area.
During the 2013/14 indoor season,
the association is running 3 leagues,
consisting of 13 teams.
Women’s Tier IV
Our Women’s league has been highly
competitive with 5 teams and
combined with our U18 teams for
this indoor.
The Women’s league is looking to
expand to include an outdoor league
that would run from the end of April
into early August. The team finishing
highest in the standings will receive a
berth to the ASA Tier III Provincials.
Classics & Masters
Our over 35 Classics and Masters
leagues have been running for a
number of years. Both divisions are
recreational and allow players to
register in EDSA or other Adult
leagues as well. These leagues for the
outdoor run from the end of April
until the end of June.
Men’s Tier IV & Co-Ed
The SPDSA is offering a Men’s Tier IV
and a Co-Ed league for the 2015
outdoor season if there is enough
interest. The Men’s league would
follow the same structure as our
Women’s Tier IV league. For our Co-
Ed league see page 2.
A minimum number of applications
are required by February 15, 2015
Women’s Phoenix
The SPDSA’s competitive Women’s
Phoenix team is looking for players
for the outdoor season. The team is
competing in division 1 of the EDSA.

U10 Junior Phoenix Program Junior Phoenix program to replace U10 Advanced
Over the course of the last few months
the SPDSA technical team has been
working on an improved U10 Advanced
program. The work done here has
created what will now be known as the
U10 Junior Phoenix Program.
What does it look like? Throughout the
season players and coaches will be
committed to training and playing 4
times a week. This will consist of 2
sessions that are technically lead by
SPDSA staff and supported by the team
coaches. There will be one team practice
lead by the coach and a game in the
EIYSA league.
Why the change? To make a greater
impact for our players and coaches by
adopting a professionalized program
that will include a curriculum based plan
and purposeful training to enhance the
development of our U10 age group.
I have more questions…We expect you
to have questions about the new
program and that’s why the SPDSA will
be hosting an open meeting to give a
thorough breakdown of how the
program will look. The presentation will
be set-up to answer many questions you
may have about the program.
Afterwards any additional questions that
parents or coaches may have will be
opened to the floor.
Open Meeting: Thursday February 12
5:30pm-6:30pm Gibson’s Room in
Millennium Place.
Please email any questions you may
currently have about the new program
to Dean ([email protected]) by
February 9th. These questions will be
compiled for the technical committee to
look at and answer through their
presentation.
SPDSA Introduces Adult Co-Ed League Adult 7v7 Co-Ed league to begin for the 2015 Outdoor Season
The Technical team has introduced single
year age groups at the SPDSA starting with
Under-4 (2011) until Under-8 (2007).
The change was made in order to have
players playing against the same birth year,
rather than having , in some circumstances
players almost two years apart playing
against one another.
Between U4-U8 there is vast growth and
physical development and by limiting this
difference the SPDSA believes it will increase
the enjoyment of soccer and the
development of players.
The programs will operate in the same way
as previous years. If you have a child in
Under-7 for the outdoor season, they would
be playing the same game as if they were still
in the previous combined Under-8 program.
The SPDSA office analyzed registration
numbers from the past and determined that
this change would not adversely affect soccer
in Sherwood Park. If in the event registration
numbers are to low to offer a single age-
group, the SPDSA has procedures in place to
ensure all registered players have a place to
play in Sherwood Park.
Single Age Groups Introduced in SPDSA Younger Age Groups
The SPDSA is introducing an Adult Co-Ed league for the 2015 outdoor season.
The league is intended to be a recreational division with the emphasis on the social and fitness aspect of the game.
The game will be played Sunday evenings throughout May and June with a secondary day during the week in case of rainouts.
Full information on the league can be found here
The game will be played with some modified rules:
Field Size: Game will be played on U12 Fields
Number of Players: 7v7 (6 outfield 1 goalkeeper)
Females: Minimum 2 on the field, not incl. goalkeeper
Duration: 2 halves of 30 minutes

SPDSA Referees of the Month Recognizing officials their continued hard work on the pitch
December Referees of the Month
Kamryn Moscrip is in her first year of the referee
development program. She is showing a
keen sense to officiating and is improving
with every game. Kamryn loves working
with the younger players.
Braeden Opgenorth is in his
second year of the
development program. He
continues to impress coaches
and players alike with his
consistent decision making
abilities. We in the program
have received numerous
positive comments regarding his abilities to deal with
the younger players.
James Nelson is one of our more seasoned officials
who constantly thrives on doing the
best job possible. James can be
counted on when assigning gets
tough due to the large amount of
games needing to be covered. The
SPDSA thanks James for all his help.
Carleen Beynon is also one of our most experienced
officials who can be called on at anytime and who
responds with enthusiasm especially when refereeing
the younger and more skillful players. She continually
strives for the betterment of the game.
January Referees of the Month
Rob Reimer is one of our more
experienced referees. He enjoys
refereeing all levels of soccer, accepts
all appointments and continues to help
the younger officials.
Shannon Cadrin enjoys the
challenges of refereeing all
age and skill levels, she too, is
one of the SPDSA’s
experienced officials. She
continues to support the
younger referees in their
development.
Gregory Dallon is in his third year of
the referee development program and
is demonstrating a consistent approach
in his application to the laws of the
game. This approach has earned him
respect from the players and promotes
a good working relationship.
Graham Weighell is in his first
year of the referee development
program. He is receiving very
positives comments from coaches
and parents on his abilities as a
referee.
All SPDSA Referees of the Month

SPDSA Coach of the Week
December Coaches of the Week
Nominated By: Laurie McGee Age Group of the Team: U10 - Alec Goodwin Please explain why you feel this Coach should be awarded the Coach of the Week: I would like to nominate Alec Goodwin as Coach of the Week if not the year. He is amazing with the girls. This is my daughters first time playing soccer and she loves it mainly due to the inspiration of her coach. He engages in the practices and doesn't keep the bench warm. He is complementary of the girls talents and hard work but also teaches them the skills they need to improve. He is one gifted and skilled coach. We are lucky to have him.
Nominated By: Lisa Age Group of the Team: U6 - Chris Laing Please explain why you feel this Coach should be awarded the Coach of the Week: Our coach Chris Laing should be coach of the week as his effort in getting this groups of 4/5 year olds engaged is outstanding! The drills performed at practice are exceptional in the players progression. One of my boys is timid of the ball and coach Chris paid special attention to helping him to increase his confidence and interest in the game! Phenomenal effort and greatly appreciated!

Nominated By: Kristin Amico Age Group of the Team: U12 Boys Phoenix - Osmo Bimba Please explain why you feel this Coach should be awarded the Coach of the Week: Coach Ozzy is a great coach to our tier 2 players. Alyx Durocher is Global Sports MVP
The stresses that come with high school and playing
club soccer can often be enough for anyone but for Alyx
Durocher who currently plays for the U18 Tier 3
Sherwood Park Phoenix team it’s not enough. She
referees within the SPDSA but she gives back even
more as the Assistant Coach of the U12 Tier 3 girls
Phoenix team.
When asked about the time management that’s
required to be able to Coach, Alyx said that while it’s
really difficult to find the time to get her school work
done she continues to coach the girls because of how
important they are to her and how she wants to
continue to inspire them.
One of the Coaches of the U12 Tier 3 team Jason
Phelan, lauds the commitment of Alyx
“She’s at every practice, she’s at all of the games she
can attend...Any time she’s available she’s there.”
Alyx started coaching the team three years ago when
her own Coach at the time had asked for help with
coaching his younger daughters team.
Alyx jumped at the opportunity, one reason being that
her coaches had such an impact on her.
“[It started there] wanting to inspire kids the way that I
was inspired by my coaches.”
Her impact the last three years with these young soccer
athletes is immeasurable and having someone like Alyx
there as a coach is a huge benefit says Phelan.
“When the message comes from the Coaches it’s a
message from another authority figure, when it comes
from [Alyx] its from one of their peers.”
Alyx says she wishes she had someone her age when
she was younger to show her “that it doesn’t just end at
a certain point, that you can keep doing stuff for your
community and helping people.”
The SPDSA thanks Alyx for her continued support and
time and that without her and other volunteers that the
association would not be able to survive.
From everyone at Sherwood Park Soccer,
Congratulations Alyx on winning the Global Sports
MVP!

Sports Should be Child’s Play By David Epstein | June 10, 2014 | New York Times
THE national furor over concussions misses the primary scourge that is harming kids and damaging youth sports in America.
The heightened pressure on child athletes to be, essentially, adult athletes has fostered an epidemic of hyperspecialization that is both dangerous and counterproductive.
One New York City soccer club proudly ad-vertises its development pipeline for kids under age 6, known as U6. The coach-picked stars, “poised for elite level soccer,” gradu-ate to the U7 “pre-travel” program. Parents, visions of scholarships dancing in their heads, enable this by paying for private coaching and year-round travel.
Children are playing sports in too structured a manner too early in life on adult-size fields — i.e., too large for optimal skill develop-ment — and spending too much time in one sport. It can lead to serious injuries and, a growing body of sports science shows, a lesser ultimate level of athletic success.
We should urge kids to avoid hyperspeciali-zation and instead sample a variety of sports through at least age 12.
Nearly a third of youth athletes in a three-year longitudinal study led by Neeru Jayan-thi, director of primary care sports medicine at Loyola University in Chicago, were highly specialized — they had quit multiple sports in order to focus on one for more than eight months a year — and another third weren’t far behind. Even controlling for age and the total number of weekly hours in sports, kids in the study who were highly specialized had a 36 percent increased risk of suffering a serious overuse injury. Dr. Jayanthi saw kids with stress fractures in their backs, arms or legs; damage to elbow ligaments; and cracks in the cartilage in their joints.
Because families with greater financial re-sources were better able to facilitate the travel and private coaching that specializa-tion requires, socioeconomic status turned up as a positive predictor of serious injury. Some young athletes now face surgeries befitting their grandparents. Young hockey
goaltenders repeatedly practice butterfly style — which stresses the developing hip joint when the legs are splayed to block the bottom of the goal. The sports surgeon Marc Philippon, based in Vail, Colo., saw a 25-year-old goalie who already needed a hip re-placement.
In the Loyola study, sport diversification had a protective effect. But in case health risks alone aren’t reason enough for parents to ignore the siren call of specialization, diversi-fication also provides performance benefits.
Kids who play multiple “attacking” sports, like basketball or field hockey, transfer learned motor and anticipatory skills — the unconscious ability to read bodies and game situations — to other sports. They take less time to master the sport they ultimately choose.
Several studies on skill acquisition now show that elite athletes generally practiced their sport less through their early teenage years and specialized only in the mid-to-late teen-age years, while so-called sub-elites — those who never quite cracked the highest ranks — homed in on a single sport much sooner.
Data presented at the April meeting of the American Medical Society for Sports Medi-cine showed that varsity athletes at U.C.L.A. — many with full scholarships — specialized on average at age 15.4, whereas U.C.L.A. undergrads who played sports in high school, but did not make the intercollegiate level, specialized at 14.2.
We may prize the story of Tiger Woods, who demonstrated his swing at age 2 for Bob Hope. But the path of the two-time N.B.A. M.V.P. Steve Nash (who grew up playing soccer and didn’t own a basketball until age 13) or the tennis star Roger Federer (whose parents encouraged him to play badminton, basketball and soccer) is actually the norm.
A Swedish study of sub-elite and elite tennis players — including five who ranked among the top 15 in the world — found that those who topped out at as sub-elites dropped all other sports by age 11. Eventual elites devel-
oped in a “harmonious club environment without greater demands for success,” and played multiple sports until age 14.
The sports science data support a “sampling period” through at least age 12. Mike Joyn-er, a Mayo Clinic physician and human per-formance expert, would add general physical literacy-building to the youth sports menu: perhaps using padded gymnastics gyms for parkour, which is essentially running, climb-ing or vaulting on any obstacle one can find.
In addition to athletic diversity, kids’ sports should be kid-size.
In Brazil, host of this month’s World Cup, kids are weaned on “futsal,” a lightly struc-tured and miniaturized form of soccer. Fut-sal is played on tiny patches of grass or con-crete or on indoor courts and typically by teams of five players.
Players touch the ball up to five times as frequently as they do in traditional soccer, and the tighter playing area forces children to develop foot and decision-making skills under pressure.
A futsalization of youth sports generally would serve engagement, skill development and health.
USA Hockey (which has barred checking in youth games) recently invited adults to play on a 310-by-130-foot ice rink to show them what it’s like for an 8-year-old to play on a regulation rink. The grown-ups’ assess-ments: “too much time between the action”; “it’s hard to communicate because everyone is spread out so far”; “you end up spending a lot of time in open space.”
Futsal, basketball and ... padded parkour?
Sounds like a strange three-sport athlete,
and a perfect model for kids.

SPDSA - Coach Mentorship
Being a coach in Sherwood Park gives you an opportunity that no other club can offer; the ability to develop under the guidance of our trained Technical Leads and prepare for licensing with the assistance of the U17 Canadian National Coach Sean Fleming.
Our Technical Leads lead sessions for Coaches throughout the indoor and outdoor seasons. These sessions are free for coaches to attend and will help guide you to a better understanding of the types of activities that are appropriate for the kids you are currently coaching.
Sean Fleming’s role within the Coach Mentorship of the SPDSA is to prepare our coaches that are looking to obtain ASA Licenses. -To provide programs for all coaches within the SPDSA who are entering their C License, Provincial B, and National B. -To provide guidance and mentor on field with prospective coaches with on field sessions. -To provide mentorship when possible, to our younger age group coaches (U8,U10) who are looking to become certified coaches.
December 31st Coaches Mentorship Session
Coaching mentorship sessions occur when available and when interested coaches are available. The last session held was December 31st with John Vinci, Rob McCullough, Lee Ballam, Chris Pearson and Steve Ricketts attending. All coaches were asked to prepare a session plan and present the session to the rest of the coaches. After all the sessions were completed on field, they went over each of the sessions and discussed how the session went and what could have been better, etc If you are interested in the SPDSA coaching mentorship, contact Daniel Drummond ([email protected]) and he will provide information and further detail on the program.
