D o I have to go all formal this year? I became President of Sheffield and Hallamshire Motor Club in April, and am wondering if I should sit atop our camper, wearing my badge of office and try to look the part – or do I run round like a headless chicken as usual? I’m pretty certain that I’ll be doing the headless
chicken thing! It really is an honour to be President of Sheffield and Hallamshire Motor Club . I’m looking at the box containing the badge of office which has a plaque engraved with all the past presidents. The first one was A. Muir Wilson in 1904-1906 – a long time ago I’m sure you’ll agree. I am the third “Madam President”; the first was Merle Morewood in 1966, Jean Owen held office in 1994, and now it is my turn in 2012. And, believe it or not, history will be made next year when Mary Jones takes over from me – two women in consecutive years…Today Sheffield & Hallamshire Motor Club, tomorrow – the world! But whilst we’re waiting for world domination we’ll try and keep this show on the road, I’ve tried very hard to book good weather this year, here’s hoping I’ve succeeded... Things have changed again this year – we’re still trying to get you all in off the road as quickly as possible, I hope we’re getting there. Some of the exhibitors, the Late Model Classics, have kindly agreed to display in the “Sheffield” public car park. This is a trial to see if it does help with the traffic – could be a total flop and cause chaos – we shall see. All the exhibitors bring their cars and bikes for you to view, and some of the exhibits are priceless, so please show your appreciation by respecting the vehicles. There are a great many people I must thank – Hawleys Tyres And John Bee Ltd for their sponsorship; The Eyres for the use of their land and their efforts before the show to help things run smoothly; Sam and his team of burger flippers and pint pullers who work incredibly hard to keep up with the demand; The marshals - the ones in the charming day-glow orange tabards - a hardy band of club members, family and friends, who not only take your money and direct you around the site but have helped with setting up, and, after you have all gone home, will clear the whole site – great work all of you! Last but not least, I want to say a big “thank-you” to you, our exhibitors and visitors - without you there would be no show. Have a great evening, but please remember Sheffield & Hallamshire Motor Club members are motorsport enthusiasts and participants. We carry out our activities on race tracks, special stages, road rallies, bike/car trial sections or in autotests, under full and proper regulations. We all love the sight and sound of raw power, but please have a thought for your safety and the safety of others at the show. Whether you are behind the wheel or on foot the law applies, on or off the highway, and you are responsible for your actions. Have fun, be safe. Tina Asquith. P.S. I didn’t mention the Queen’s Jubilee, or the Olympics, or the Footie once – oops – blew it at the last minute!

a potted history of Sheffield & Hallamshire Motor Club
Although officially formed in October 1904, it is believed that Sheffield & Hallamshire Motor Club was first conceived in 1902 as the Sheffield & District Automobilists’ Club. This was an era when motoring - let alone motor sport - was in it’s infancy. Over a century has passed since then, and in that time the club and its members have been involved in almost every aspect of motor racing and motor sport. From small beginnings the club went forward, and by the early 1920s was represented in many reliability trials in two, three and four-wheeled classes.
By 1947 the membership of the club was over 250, and with both cars and motorcycles enjoying full event schedules the decision was taken to split the club into two sections with a controlling Management structure. Today these two sections operate independently, but still have a management committee to take an overview of the Club’s operations.
From country-wide car trials to organising stages on the RAC Rally, racing at Gamston to the celebrated High Peak sporting car trial, Sheffield & Hallamshire and it’s members have been part of the action. We celebrated our centenary year in 2004, and were one of the first ten MSA recognised clubs to have reached that important and historic milestone.
Today the club has a wide and diverse spectrum of members, ranging from veterans of the sport through to the city’s students, who compete in disciplines as varied as road and stage rallying, through to sprints and karting. In addition to competing, S&HMC also has a rich history of organising events which continues to this day. Although Autotests and Classic, Sporting and Production Car Trials have been seen less and less on the Club calendar in recent years, we currently organise single-venue stage rallies, road rallies, sprints and of course, this, our annual motor show. We also lend our expertise to numerous other events throughout the year. Our marshals and radio crews are also some of the busiest in the region, with some members volunteering on events every weekend during the rallying season. The club also produces a bi-monthly magazine - ‘the gazette’, which features event reports, articles, photography and comment from the club’s members. The Gazette has a long history within the club, and more recent editions of the magazine are available to view online on the club’s website. We hope to be able to expand the archive on the site soon to include editions dating back over the last four decades. Whatever your interest in motor sport, come along to Abbeydale Sports Club on the first Wednesday of the month and introduce yourself; whether you like to spectate, or want to marshal, officiate, organise or compete, we have something to offer you.
To find further details of the club’s activities, a calendar of events and more information about becoming a member of Sheffield & Hallamshire Motor Club, visit our website:
www.sheffieldandhallamshiremc.co.ukwww.sheffieldandhallamshiremc.co.ukwww.sheffieldandhallamshiremc.co.ukwww.sheffieldandhallamshiremc.co.uk There are a number of different contact details on the website too, giving you all the information you need for general enquiries and to get in touch with the right person for any of the different disciplines of the sport we are involved with. The club has also just started a group on Facebook, which we hope will help with communication amongst members and make keeping in touch with, and even attracting new and younger members easier. Just search for ‘Sheffield & Hallamshire Motor Club’. On behalf of all the members of the club, we look forward to welcoming you soon.

I have been a club member for a very long time, but have been working in the US and Canada for most of the last 16 years, based there full time for some of that period, the rest of the time doing an extended commute from the UK. I have currently got it down to a routine of getting back to England once a month since I bought a house in Dronfield 3 years ago. One of the factors that I use to figure my flight schedules is the dates of club events, so when the dates for this year’s Alexander Calder Financial Challenge (an interclub competition between Sheffield & Hallamshire Motor Club, Lindholme Motor Sports Club, Rotherham Motor Club and Worksop & District Motor Club) were published early I immediately checked which events I might be able to get over for. The first one was Round 1, which was first published as a Scatter organised by Rotherham MC, then a Treasure Hunt, and in the end was a Scatter/Treasure Hunt. Having figured I could make the event I needed to find a Navigator, or failing that a driver. I managed to get to a Wednesday meeting and asked Mike Jones if he fancied having a go, seeing as he had a background of navigating on rallies. He agreed to give it a shot so we were all set. As I was only travelling back from the States the night before I had my fingers crossed for no delays, and fortunately I managed to make it to my house for about 4pm on the Thursday of the event. Just time for a shower and a change of clothes before setting off to collect Mike.
The first problem I had was finding Mike’s house, but having done that we headed off for the start north of Sheffield. The locations of the ‘clues’ were all defined by map references, so before setting off we spend a while plotting everything on the map. Some of the locations also had bonus points based on additional numbers that would be located close by. If all the numbers were found there was a clue near the end that gave the information necessary to translate these numbers into a word, for which there were additional bonus points. No specific time limit was given, but we assumed we needed to back around 10:30pm. The first few clues we headed for were relatively straightforward, but things soon became more difficult. Some of them we just couldn’t find at all, and we certainly weren’t alone based on the cars we kept seeing with crews out of the car with torches trying to find the answers. At times the weather didn’t do anything to assist, alternating between heavy rain and very strong winds. We learnt some ‘interesting’ facts, such as if the Blackpool Tower was placed on the Emley Moor TV tower what the combined height would be. I am sure that will come in useful in the future! When it got to 10pm we decided we were not going to have time to visit all the references so started to skip some of the clues. We eventually made it to the finish just after 10.30, but some crews were still arriving back around 11pm, so in hindsight we could have taken longer had it not been for the ambiguous finish time. There

was an ample supply of chips and curry sauce laid on at the finish to help keep me awake. When the results came out we hadn’t done as well as we had hoped, but of the 3 S & H crews out we just beat Paul and Matt, but finished quite a way behind Alex and Craig. Still, an enjoyable evening. I managed to stay awake and Mike has no symptoms of the ‘mal de navi’ that affects so many. We plan to some of the other rounds that are of a similar format, so hopefully we can build on this first one and improve further. I am going to be in the UK for the 2nd round organised by Lindholme MC, so if the event is a Treasure Hunt scatter then hopefully Mike will be available again and we can have another go. The following night was the Club Awards dinner. Having not made this event for quite a few years it was good to get to this years, and I had an enjoyable evening. Having ordered the Chicken I think I made the right choice as everyone who had ordered the steak seemed to find it tough. Then it was back to the States to get some work done. Yesterday, March 4th, I went to my first US based even of the year. I have been out in Phoenix the last week so we went to see the NASCAR Sprint Cup race there. When I used to based in the UK I was in no way a fan of ‘roundy roundy’ racing, but since being
over here I have become a big fan of NASCAR. I have even managed both a passenger ride and a drive in these cars as birthday presents, which certainly gets the adrenaline going. There is nothing to beat 43 noisy V8s running within a few inches of each other. These races are about as far removed from the technological extremes of Formula 1, but are great fun to watch. Like most sport, the atmosphere of actually being at the track is far better than watching on the TV, but I even enjoy that. Phoenix was the second round of this year’s championship, following on from the Daytona 500. Whether I get to many more races this year will depends on work commitments. Two years ago I went to Melbourne to watch the Australian GP, but this year I will have to accept watching it on TV. Hopefully the season will have more completion and less dominance by Red Bull. The WRC is on TV over here as well so I watched the coverage of the Swedish Rally, and the next round in Mexico will be on next weekend. I will be in California so at least I will be getting some warmer weather than we have had in Green Bay!
