SECTION 1.6: PROBLEM SOLVING USING ALGEBRAIC MODELSGoal: Use problem solving strategies to solve real-life problems.
DEFINITIONS:
Verbal Model: the equation written in words.
Algebraic Model: a mathematical statement written from a verbal model.
Steps in the problem solving plan: Step 1. Write a verbal model Step 2. Assign labels Step 3. Write an algebraic model Step 4. Solve the algebraic model Step 5. Answer the question
EXAMPLE 1: WRITE AND USE A FORMULA
Chairlifts: Chairlifts transport snowboarders and skiers to the tops of the ski runs. The Iron Horse Quad Chairlift in Montana carries skiers a distance of 3250 feet. The chairlift moves at a speed of 450 feet per minute. Find the time it takes the chairlift to travel the entire distance.
CHECKPOINT: WRITE AND USE A FORMULA
Find the time it takes the chairlift in Example 1 to travel 1800 feet.
EXAMPLE 2: WRITE AND USE AN ALGEBRAIC MODEL
EXAMPLE 3: LOOK FOR A PATTERN
CHECKPOINT: WRITE AND USE A SIMPLE MODEL
