SEASON 2017
Recognise the iconic Adelaide bookstore in our
photographs this year? Good bookstores, good coffee
and good chamber-music - three of life’s essentials!
2017 marks our 20th Subscription Series in Adelaide
and we begin with one of our favourite composers -
Claudio Monteverdi. Our journey continues through the
year with musical friends Arvo Pärt, Bob Chilcott and
Carlo Gesualdo and concludes with one of the most
loved works in the choral repertory - Handel’s Messiah -
presented in our own intimate ‘chamber’ version within
the lofty, resonant expanse of St. Peter’s Cathedral.
We’re also very excited to present three new works by
Adelaide-educated composers Steven Tanoto and
Anne Cawrse, and by one of the doyens of Australian
composition, Graeme Koehne.
We love discovering new music and creating new
ways of presenting existing music. It keeps us alive
artistically and, just like a good book, fires our
imaginations.
We are also delighted to move to our new Adelaide
Hills performance venue, the UKARIA Cultural Centre in
Mt Barker - beautiful outlook, welcoming and friendly
atmosphere, wonderfully clear acoustic!

PROGRAM 1
Heartbeat, breath, brain activity… these are vital biological ‘signs of life’. Laughter, tears, passion, joy, hard work, friendship, love… these are proof of life - as it happens. And proof of a life well-lived. Like a ‘life narrative’, this program contrasts the outer physical and commercial elements of daily life with the ebb and flow of our inner, emotional lives.
SATURDAY 26 AUGUST, 6.30PMPilgrim Church, 12 Flinders Street, Adelaide
SUNDAY 27 AUGUST, 2.30PMUKARIA Cultural Centre, 119 Williams Road, Mt Barker Summit

PROGRAMSeven Advent Antiphons - Bob Chilcott
New Works - Anne Cawrse
Seven Magnificat Antiphons - Arvo Pärt
Arvo Pärt and Bob Chilcott – what a magnificent pairing! Each of the seven antiphons in these two works in is a description of Jesus Christ, his lineage and attributes. Set in Latin and German, all begin with the exclamation ‘O’. These two significant works by Pärt and Chilcott are very different in their musical expression of the traditional Advent antiphons and Anne Cawrse has taken elements that sit at the heart of the Antiphons - humanity, history, love, redemption - as the basis of her new works.
PROGRAM 2
SATURDAY 21 OCTOBER, 6.30PMSt. Peter’s Cathedral, 27 King William Road, North Adelaide
SUNDAY 22 OCTOBER, 2.30PM UKARIA Cultural Centre, 119 Williams Road, Mt Barker Summit

PROGRAMTenebrae Responsories for Maundy Thursday (1611) - Carlo Gesualdo
Tenebrae Responsories on Songs by Bob Dylan (2011) - Paul Crabtree
Miserere mei, Deus - James MacMillan
New work - Graeme Koehne
Bob Dylan’s song Positively 4th Street begins with the words “You’ve got a lot of nerve to say you are my friend…” What does this have to do with Carlo Gesualdo? Betrayal! Each in their own distinctive way, Gesualdo and Crabtree both reflect upon the acts of treachery that led to the arrest and crucifixion of Jesus Christ. This most powerful narrative also finds expression in a new work by Graeme Koehne, and the falling of Passiontide’s deep shadow finds solace in James Macmillan’s inspired Miserere.

Messiah - George Frideric Handel
Handel’s Messiah has been an integral part of the extended celebration of Christmas in English speaking countries for well over a century. Our intimate, ‘chamber’ performances of this perennial masterpiece are distinctive not only because of the vitality, clarity and drama of the choruses, but also because the arias and recitatives showcase the impressive solo credentials of the members of Adelaide Chamber Singers. Accompanied by an ensemble of some of Adelaide’s finest Baroque musicians, this will be a Messiah to savour.
