The next Friends of the Chanhassen Library Book Sale will be Jan. 31- Feb. 3 The Friends of the Chanhassen Library again will be having one of their spectacular book sales.

The sale starts with a preview party that is free to members of the Friends, or $5 admission, on Thursday evening, Jan. 31. On Friday and Saturday, the sale is will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on Sunday, Feb. 3, from 1-5 p.m.

Proceeds for these sales support library programs such as the Great Decisions talks and the Chanhassen Lucky Day collection of extra copies of bestsellers. Books can be brought in any time.

PUBLIC INPUT

The Carver County Library needs public input on the direction the Library should take in planning for its services over the next five years.

Anyone interested in having their voice heard should may attend an upcoming session: 10-11:30 a.m., Saturday,

Jan. 19 at the Waconia City Council Chambers.

Excel 1 & 2 Building Job Skills: Excel is used in the workplace for accounting, tracking inventory, and organizing data. Learn how to work with spreadsheets, create formulas, and build a budget. Prerequisite: Ability to use the keyboard and mouse. Class is 6-8 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 23.

Senior Surf Day Computer Class: Beginners can come and learn how to: type in a web address and navigate between web pages; determine if a website is secure; conduct searches using common search engines; and access Internet sites that will assist you in finding information, including medicare.gov. This class is repeated monthly. Class is 10 a.m.-noon, Monday, Jan. 28.

Excel 2: Learn more about working with multiple worksheets, formulas, mouse pointers and charting basics. Call to register at (962) 227-1500. Class is 6-8 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 21.

LinkedIn for Job Seekers: (Demonstration, not hands on.) Learn how to set up a LinkedIn account, create a complete profile, and use LinkedIn for finding jobs. Class is 6-8 p.m., Monday, March 25.

Word 2: Building Job Skills: Learn more about page layout. Class covers margins, page breaks, auto correct, auto format, page numbers, headers, footers, lists, tabs and tables. Class is 6-8 p.m., Thursday, April 18.

WRITING

The Writer’s Group meets 10 a.m.-noon, Jan. 19. Join this group of beginning writers for advice and support. They meet the third Saturday of every month at the Chanhassen Library. They have a variety of fascinating speakers and intriguing writing exercises.

The Author’s Collectivemeets 1-4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26. Professional editor Laurel Means will offer tips on tightening up prose and avoiding common errors. The Author’s Collective provides an opportunity to gather and share a wealth of knowledge. Each gathering discusses a topic related to publishing and provides a time for Q&As. Join local authors to share common experiences and publishing concerns in an informal setting. The group is open to and made up of authors representing various genres.

Weekly story times kick off again at the Chanhassen Library in 2013. No registration is required.

Family Storytimes — 10:30 a.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays resume Jan. 15. Children and their caregivers are invited to come and share 30 minutes of stories, songs, and fingerplays that encourage the development of early literacy skills. The program is recommended for 3-6 year olds. No registration is required.

Lapsit Storytimes — 10:30 a.m. Thursdays resumes Jan. 17. Babies to 18 months old and their caregivers share quality time in a 20-minute session designed to encourage language development through sharing board books and movement activities, followed by time for visiting and play. eBooks: I just got an iPad, and I downloaded Overdrive Media Console, registered my Adobe epub account on my iPad, then downloaded a great eBook from the library: Cara Black’s “Murder at the Lanterne Rouge: An Aimee Leduc Investigation.” Aimee and her PI partners Renee and Saj stray away from their usual computer security cases, when Aimee helps Renee track down his missing Chinese immigrant girlfriend, Meizi. She disappears just before a body is discovered in the neighborhood, and Aimee has to win the trust of immigrants with fake papers working in horrible sweatshops in the slums of Paris. The murdered man was friend of Meizi’s, and also a secretive, brilliant engineer working with information found in the archives of the medieval guilds. Fascinating and riveting, you won’t be able to stop reading. This series set in Paris is one of my favorites.

We have lots of great books in eBook format: “Thirty Rooms to Hide In” by Luke Longstreet Sullivan; “The Art Forger” by Shapiro; “The Dog Stars” by Peter Heller; “The End of Your Life Book Club” by Will Schwalbe; “The Timekeeper” by Mitch Albom. Yes, these great books all have request lists. You are sent an email as soon as it is available for you to check it out; but you do not have to “pick it up,” you don’t have to return it, and there are no late fees!
