Low cost carrier (LCC) Southwest Airlines is bringing the heart of their employee’s front and centre with the announcement of the car-rier’s first-ever employee-designed uniforms and Boeing 737-800 air-craft ‘heart’ interior featuring the new heart galley and seat.

“Introducing our new uniform designs and fully branded 737-800 heart interi-ors into the fleet is an accomplish-ment directly resulting from our hardworking employee de-sign teams,” said Gary Kelly, Chair-man, President and Chief Execu-tive Officer for Southwest Airlines. “Southwest continues to enhance our unique brand that brings reli-

Southwest first introduced the bold new look of its iconic brand in Sep-tember 2014, unveiling a new logo, airport experience, and aircraft liv-ery, heart. Since then, the carrier

continued this momentum with the roll out of the heart brand, largely due to the hard work of employee design teams and departments from across the company.

With the last complete redesign in 1996, Southwest has selected a new uniform designed by its own employees along with the airline’s partners at Cintas. Once the de-sign was complete, more than 120 employees across 37 cities tested pieces for fit and comfort, perfor-mance and functionality, durability,

Bombardier secures firm order for 10 CRJ900 aircraft

Bombardier has confirmed that an unidentified customer has signed a firm purchase agreement for 10 CRJ900 aircraft. Based on the list price of the aircraft, the firm agreement is valued at ap-proximately US$472 million. Since its launch, the CRJ Series family of regional jets has stimulated the regional jet market. In North America alone, it accounts for over 20% of all jet departures. Globally, the family operates more than 200,000 flights per month. The CRJ Series aircraft family includes over 100 owners and operators in ap-proximately 40 countries, while the worldwide fleet has logged over 43.5 million flight hours.

Air China takes delivery of one new leased Boeing 737-800 from GECAS

GE Capital Aviation Services Limited (GECAS), the commercial aircraft leasing arm of GE, has delivered a new leased Boeing 737-800 aircraft powered by CFM engines to Air China. Earlier this year, GECAS delivered another leased Boe-ing 737-800 to Air China. Both were part of GE-CAS’ existing order book with Boeing.

AIRCRAFT & ENGINE NEWS

The airline says the newly fitted seats give passengers additional space and comfort with more leg room. As the widest economy 737 seat, the bold blue seat features an ad-justable headreast, enhanced back and bot-tom comfort, and more room to hold person-al belongings.

The seats are upholstered in Southwest’s bold blue eLeather, a composition leather made of natural leather fibres. eLeather, which made its debut on Southwest aircraft in 2012, is manufactured using eco-friendly technology including state-of-the-art techniques which recycles 95% of the processed water and con-verts its own waste streams into energy, feed-ing back into the process.

A group of frontline Southwest employees worked together to create a cutting-edge gal-ley design, which will allow flight attendants to serve passengers more efficiently than before according to the airline. Unique in the airline industry, the transverse (aft) galley on the new 737-800 aircraft does not have carts resulting in lighter weight.

With the addition of the new G7 galley (lo-cated just past the forward-entry door), flight attendants will be able to more quickly ac-commodate passengers in the forward part of the airline’s new 737-800 aircraft. Addition-ally, new space in the forward galley area for required emergency equipment means more overhead bin space.

BOC Aviation sells its final pre-2007 aircraft

BOC Aviation has sold its final four owned air-craft acquired prior to 2007, with no aircraft in the owned fleet now older than 10 years. The four aircraft sold include three Airbus A320 fam-ily aircraft and one Boeing 747 freighter. Com-menting on the sale, Robert Martin, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of BOC Avia-tion, said, “We set ourselves an internal goal of selling all aircraft in our owned fleet that pre-dated our December 2006 acquisition by Bank of China by the end of 2016, and we have achieved this six months ahead of target. “

The A350 XWB embarks on its first dem-onstration tour of China

The world’s newest airliner, the Airbus A350XWB, will make its first demo tour of China between June 25and July 2 this year. During the eight-day trip, A350 XWB test aircraft MSN2 will fly to Bei-jing (PEK), Shanghai (SHA), Guangzhou (CAN), Hai-kou (HAK) and Chengdu (CTU). The tour follows the A350’s endorsement by China Eastern Airlines who ordered 20 A350-900 aircraft in April 2016. Air China also ordered 10 A350-900s. China is one of the fastest growing markets for air transport and Airbus has supplied 50% of the in-service commercial aircraft fleet in China. The Chinese aviation industry has made important contribu-tions to the development and making of the A350 XWB. Airbus (Beijing) Engineering Centre, togeth-er and its partner Aviation Industry Corporation of China, participated in the program’s develop-ment, involving specific design work for the air-frame. Some five percent of the airframe is manu-factured in China. The A350 XWB is a symbol of strategic industrial cooperation between Airbus and China’s aviation industry.

MRO & PRODuCTION NEWSATLAS Active Winglets certification for Ci-tation M2

Tamarack Aerospace has received a Supplemen-tal Type Certificate (STC) approval from the Eu-ropean Aviation Safety Authority (EASA) for its ATLAS Active Winglets on the Cessna Citation M2 light jet. With the CJ, CJ1 and CJ1+ certified in December 2015, this brings the total num-ber of Cessna models approved for Tamarack’s ultra-efficient winglets up to four. using ATLAS, the wing span of the M2 has been increased by 5.3 feet and, when combined with Tamarack’s highly tuned winglets, the effective aspect ratio is increased from 9.3 to over 12. The result is a dramatic improvement in performance, two to three times that of a traditional winglet instal-lation. The ATLAS Active Winglets on the M2 re-duces block fuel burn by an estimated 10-12%. Range has been estimated to have increased by more than 100nm. The added stability of the winglets is exceptional; the plane dampens in 7 cycles at FL410 eliminating a yaw damper inoperative limitation that currently exists on the M2. Additionally, the ATLAS Active Winglets modification increases the MZFW by 400 lbs. and the WAT table (high/hot performance) by almost 1000 lbs.

TransDigm completes acquisition of Data Device Corporation

TransDigm Group Incorporated (TDG) has com-pleted the acquisition of ILC Holdings, the par-ent company of Data Device Corporation, from Behrman Capital for a total purchase price of uS$1.0bn in cash. TransDigm financed the acqui-sition with cash proceeds from the recently com-pleted term loan and notes offerings. The acqui-sition of DDC was previously announced on May 24, 2016. DDC is a leading supplier of databus and power controls and related products that are used primarily in military avionics, commer-cial aerospace and space applications. The com-pany’s core MIL-STD-1553 databus product line has a large installed base of systems worldwide that spans hundreds of unique military and com-mercial platforms. DDC revenues are anticipated to be over uS$200m for the fiscal year ending December 2016 with approximately 75% com-ing from the defense market and the remainder primarily from the commercial transport market. Approximately 70% of revenue is derived from the aftermarket, with nearly all of the revenue from proprietary and sole source products. Ap-proximately 45% of revenue is derived from customers outside of the United States. The business employs 650 employees in its various locations worldwide.

€175m revolving credit facility for Finnair

On 22 June 2016, Finnair Plc signed a binding €175m (uS$199.5m) syndicated revolving credit facility for general corporate purposes. The coor-dinator and bookrunner for the facility is Skandi-naviska Enskilda Banken AB (publ). Danske Bank, Nordea Bank, OP Corporate Bank and Swedbank AB (publ) also joined with equal tickets. The loan replaces a syndicated revolving credit facil-ity dated July 2, 2013, which was unutilized. The new credit facility carries a three-year tenor and has two one-year extension options. The financial covenant of the loan is adjusted gearing of 175 percent and all other terms of the facility are sub-stantially in line with the previous transaction.

Quebec government concludes deal on Bombardier CSeries US$1bn investment

It has been confirmed that the deal first dis-closed on October 25, 2015 whereby the Quebec government was to invest uS$1bn in

FINANCIAL NEWScash-strapped Bombardier, has been conclud-ed. The payment will come in two tranches, with uS$500m due on June 30, and a further uS$500m on September 1.According to Bombardier, “The investment has been approved by Bombardier’s board of di-rectors and the cabinet of the government of Québec, and remains conditional upon the satis-faction of other customary conditions. The $1bn uS investment will be used entirely for cash flow purposes of the CSALP.” The construction of the investment has involved the creation of a new company CSeries Aircraft Limited Partnership (CSALP). In essence, the Quebecois government will take a 49.5% stake in the CSeries as opposed to the company as a whole. The board of the new company will comprise three Bombardier representatives and two from the Quebecois government.Bombardier added, “Bombardier will maintain operational control of the CSeries program and consolidate its financial results. Fred Cromer will serve as president of the CSALP, and continue in his current role.” It was also announced back on April 25 that both the Quebecois government and Bombardier have approached the Ottawa government to pitch in with a further uS$1 bil-lion to increase the likelihood of overall success for the project. However, the order books for the CSeries are looking healthier since the signing of a deal to supply 75 CS100s to uS-based Delta Airlines and the signing of a letter of intent to supply 45 CS300 jets to Air Canada.
