Children’s Connection 2012

WelcomeDear Readers:

This week, the Springfield Con-nection turns over its pages tothe youth and students. Weasked principals and teachers

from area schools to encourage students tocontribute their words, pictures and pho-tos for our annual Children’s Issue.

The response, as always, was enormous. While we were unable to publish every piecewe received, we did our best to put togethera paper with a fair sampling of the submit-ted stories, poems, drawings, paintings, photographs and other works of art.

We appreciate the extra effort made byschool staff to gather the materials duringtheir busy time leading up to the holidays. We’d also like to encourage both schools andparents to mark their 2013 calendars forearly December, the deadline for submis-sions for next year’s Children’s Connection.

Please keep us in mind as your childrencontinue to create spectacular works of artand inspiring pieces of writing in the com-ing year.

The children’s issue is only a part of ouryear-round commitment to cover educationand our local schools. As always, the Con-nection welcomes letters to the editor, storyideas, calendar listings and notices of localevents from our readers. Photos and othersubmissions about special events at schoolsare especially welcome for our weeklyschools pages.

Our preferred method for material is e-mail, which should be sent [email protected], butyou can reach us by mail at 1606 KingStreet, Alexandria, VA 22314 or call 703-778-9414 with any questions.

The Day We Made Lunch for theSchool!

As my friends and I strutted into the caf-eteria for breakfast, we noticed the placehad been left a mess. I noticed a mysteri-ous looking note on the table. I read thenote out loud. “Got sick… Kitchen a mess…Clean up… Then Cook!” I told my friendsMiguel and Jonathan to grab a hairnet andan apron. They asked me why. “We are go-ing to make lunch for the school,” I repliedin a stern voice.

“Whaaat?” they said at the same time.“We have to! We can’t let the Mighty

Mustangs go without lunch!” I said as webegan walking toward the hairnets andaprons.

“Okay, fine,” Jonathan said with a sigh.“I’m in too!” Miguel said. What should we

cook? What about hamburgers with friesand for dessert, vanilla ice cream with hotfudge, nuts, cherries, and whipped cream?

We began getting our ingredients to-gether. I grabbed the ice cream and top-pings. Miguel was on burgers and Jonathanhad the fries all covered. I could see bothof them fidgeting with the hairnets as theyflipped burgers and dunked fries in sizzlingoil.

“I’m tired of wearing this hairnet!”Jonathan shouted out with frustration.

“Me too!” Miguel yelled over the sizzlingsound of fries. “Fine, you don’t have to wearthe hairnets, but keep the aprons on,” I de-manded. “Let’s stay focused here.”

“Yessss!” They shouted as they high-fivedeach other. Let’s get back to work. We haveover 500 orders of fries and burgers tomake.

Minutes later, I noticed we were working

in perfect harmony until Miguel shouted,“We’re out of burgers! To be honest Idropped a few patties as I was trying to getthe hang of things,” Miguel admitted. Wehave to come up with an idea quickly. Fifthgrade lunch is in less than 45 minutes!

“We should make chicken tenders. Kidslove chicken tenders and fries. Besides, wealready have fries,” Jonathan suggested. Weall ran to the basement where we knew themeats were kept. We ran over to the hugefreezer in the corner only to find packagesof chicken frozen solid. We don’t have timefor the chicken tenders to thaw out. Withpanic in our hearts and sweaty palms, wedecided to scan the refrigerator. When weopened the refrigerator, it was like time hadstopped. We all looked at each other inshock. There it was… packages and pack-ages of the fifth grade favorite!

Ribs! Ribs! Ribs, we shouted while doingthe happy dance. We ran back to the caf-eteria, turned on the stove and dumped allthe ribs in a huge pot. We could hear classesfiling in the cafeteria right as we began todrop ribs and fries on the red Styrofoamtrays. We served the ribs, fries and ice creamto hundreds of kids that day. It was ahomerun! We even had some left over forus to try.

Yummy! We murmured while wiping ribsauce off our mouths.

I can say for sure that the next time I seea mysterious note in the cafeteria, I’ll leaveit alone!

My Dog Pepper, by Teresa Steenman of Springfield, 15, ninthgrade, Ms. Martin’s class.

Photo Essay: My Dog PepperMy labradoodle loves to put her cold nose on my exposed

hand or foot first thing in the morning as if to say “Get up! Yourdog requires your attention! Get up!” She puts her butt high inthe air with her front paws stretched way out in front and wagsher tail when inviting you to play. Pepper loves to chase all thingsthat scurry into HER backyard . . . squirrels, birds, chipmunksand the occasional cat or fox. She LOVES to play in leaf pilesand flops down in them with glee . . . occasionally hiding a veryimportant stick. She turns into a ball of fluff, lying on her back, bent like a pretzel, when she thinks you rubbing her belly is agreat idea. You can almost hear her say, “Rub my belly. You knowyou want to.” And I do.
