Editorial
elcome to your 2017 Summer-Autumn Newsletter!
My, what a summer we are having, with record breaking high
temperatures. As I write, we have just had twenty-four hours or so of
continuous, heavy rain - but our gardens and countryside did need this - and
for once I did not need the nightly sprinkler on the lawn!
But, the days are long, the woodlands green, and gardens bloom with shrubs
and flowers. So, all in all, a good time of year to get out and about, and visit
our wonderful National Trust properties.
The 2017/18 Lectures Programme has been finalised by Maggie Brown, and
ready to resume in the Autumn, and the Walking Group, currently enjoying its
Summer break, will resume in September. There is a theatre trip proposed for
April next year - but please book as soon as you can because we have to
confirm with the theatre well in advance.
We have a couple of new events for you to enjoy in the Autumn: A Murder
Mystery night in October, and a Christmas Party Tea Dance! Please do not let
lack of dance skill or a touch of arthritis deter you from the party - I am sure it
will be great fun for all!
We do still have activities over this summer: the Annual Golf Day in August,
and then in September, an Outing to Firle Place and the Meet & Greet at
Sissinghurst. The Firle Outing has only just been finalised, so we do hope
sufficient members will be attracted by the prospect of visiting this really
interesting house, and sign up quickly. You will not be disappointed!
Sadly, we had to cancel two events in June and July, but maybe the
Committee just chose the wrong time of year, rather than the wrong events.
This is your Newsletter, so if you have comments on our events, or have in
mind events which you think other members would enjoy, please contact me,
by phone or, ideally, email.

Chairman’s Report
lready summer is half way through, but at least this year we have been
able to air our barbeques and enjoy some pleasant warm evenings.
The Spring Lunch at Powder Mills Hotel was, as
usual, a great success. The Music Room was
again at our disposal and proved to be a cosy and
comfortable area for our members. Plenty of chat
and a delicious meal was the order of the day.
Thanks, once again, go to Ann Rolfe and Ros
Adkins for organising this popular event.
Our visit to the Marlowe Theatre to watch ‘Funny
Girl’ was a very pleasant day out. We were able to
explore Canterbury and have lunch before the
show. I am sure you will all join me in thanking
Lovat for organising our theatre trips. I know another theatre visit is in the
pipeline, details of which you will find in this newsletter.
The extremely successful Lecture Season came to a conclusion in May, but I
know that Maggie Brown has researched and organised the winter lectures. In
order to cover costs which slowly but surely increase, your Committee have
decided we do now need to increase the admission charge. From October, it
will be £4 for members and £5 for visitors. We have not increased
admission for many years, and in fact the new charge is what our friends in
the Tenterden Association already charge. Notwithstanding this change, we
look forward to the same audience participation as we have enjoyed during
the past year.
Some activities that have been organised by your committee have been
disappointingly supported, so much so that we had to cancel the Ritzy Royal
Celebration and the trip to Quex Park. I know those of you that booked for
these events are disappointed, but I am afraid these things cannot be run at a
loss. We do appreciate that many members may have been on holiday or
involved in other summer pursuits. The committee always works hard to
provide varying activities for your enjoyment. We would appreciate comments
or suggestions from you. Please contact any member of the committee if you
have any suggestions or comments that you would like to put forward for our
consideration.
A

It has been decided by the committee to book a smaller coach for future
outings so that we will not have to cancel and disappoint those members who
have booked. Therefore, if you wish to book, you are advised to book early to
avoid disappointment!
On a brighter note, the entries for the Annual Golf Competition at
Sedlescombe Golf Club are going well. All we need is a bright sunny day,
though not too hot! We have been playing in some extremely hot weather
lately, but we have enjoyed a super course in excellent condition. Long may it
continue!
Cathy Frewen and I visited Firle Place as a prospective trip for the Autumn. It
has been agreed to arrange this for Tuesday 5 September. So, please book
as soon as you can! You will enjoy this beautiful stately home in superb
surroundings - the much loved home of Lord Gage.
Our annual Meet and Greet takes place at Sissinghurst Castle on Friday 22
September. We will be privileged to have a private guided viewing of the North
Garden and hopefully present a promised cheque to cover the cost of
replacing the copper urn that was stolen some years ago. This is a wonderful
opportunity to meet old friends and bring along any prospective new members.
I shall look forward to meeting as many of you as possible. Further details in
this newsletter.
And, last but not least, I am pleased to announce a new member of your
Committee, Louise Hull. Louise came along to a Committee Meeting in April,
to check us out, and I am pleased to say she subsequently agreed to join us!
However we do still urgently need more members to join us on Your
Committee.
Well, enjoy the remainder of these wonderful summer days and I shall look
forward to meeting you all at our future planned events.

Treasurer's Report to the AGM
ur Current Balance is: £5,322, including profit from the 2016/17 Lectures
Season of £1,098.
From that balance your Committee has agreed the following donations;
£1,000 to Sissinghurst for a special Copper Urn for the Garden (which will be
in place for our Meet and Greet).
£500 to Winchelsea to purchase bird nest boxes and time-lapse cameras.
Also, £2,000 to Smallhythe to finance the refurbishment of the remaining
chairs in the Barn Theatre.
We hope to add to our funds following our major annual fund raising events
coming up later this year; The Fun Golf Day in August, the Murder Mystery
Evening in November, and the Christmas Party Tea Dance in December.
I look forward to everybody supporting as many of these events as possible,
thereby helping us to raise the all important funds to allow us then to help the
National Trust!

Membership
t is always so gratifying to see so many members joining in our talks, outings
and events. I have personally had the opportunity of meeting so many old
acquaintances as well as getting to know some who are new to the area. We
are a vibrant organisation, full of enthusiasm which we so enjoy sharing with
you all. Within this publication you will find all the activities we have arranged
for the coming months, and of course, look forward to sharing your company.
We are delighted to welcome new members who have most recently joined:
Cliff & Karen Hall Benjamin and Deanne Barnard Darryl Bird.
As you may know being a member of the National Trust is not a pre-requisite,
we warmly welcome new members who would be interested in sharing our
enthusiasm. Details are to be found at the back of this edition.

An Urgent Plea for Help!
e really do need more help on the committee - two more would be ideal!
If you were at the AGM you would know that our Chairman, Marion, will
be standing down at the 2018 AGM. Also, Cathy, our Membership Secretary,
is resigning too. So, the committee now has the challenge of finding
replacements for two key roles.
If either of those roles is of interest to you, then please do step forward! But, if
you would wish to help us as an ordinary committee member, you would be
more than welcome.
We are a very friendly and relaxed committee. We already have a Secretary
and Treasurer, so do not worry that we are looking to fill those roles! However,
there are several other committee members, and it is to assist them that we
seek new members. In particular, we urgently need help with organising
Outings - which are currently a major challenge for the committee.
We meet approximately once a month in a committee member's house.
Meetings typically last an hour and a half, and invariably are followed by tea
and cakes!
Our meetings are not onerous, and cover the following:
considering ideas for future events and activities, that we believe our
members would enjoy and support
agreeing which ideas to pursue, and by which committee members
reviewing projects proposed by our local National Trust properties
assessing our finances, and deciding which projects to support, and
what donation we are able to make
So, as a new member, you would not be expected to take on any specific
responsibility, unless you were really keen to do so! However, you would be
invited to assist existing committee members, and 'learn the ropes' from them.
If you think you may be interested, but not sure, why not ask if you can come
along to a committee meeting as a 'no commitment' observer?
To find out more, please contact Marion or any member of Your
Committee.

National Trust Area Meeting Feedback
wice a year the National Trust holds a Supporter Groups Meeting for the
South East Region. The purpose is to give updates from the National
Trust, especially regarding local properties, but also to build relationships
between the Supporter Groups and the National Trust representatives.
The last meeting was held at Sissinghurst on Friday 7 April.
There were committee representatives from: Eastbourne, East Kent, Hastings
& St.Leonards, Mid Kent, Rye & District, Seaford and Tenterden & District.
The National Trust fielded three, led by Hester Liakos (General Manager,
Sissinghurst Castle Garden Portfolio) with Gareth Wiltshire (Operations
Manager, White Cliffs of Dover and Winchelsea) and Vicky Bray (Business
Support Co-ordinator, Sissinghurst Castle Garden).
Hester opened the meeting with an update from the National Trust in London
and the South East. This was followed by a Question & Answer Forum, where
committee representatives were able to raise queries and issues, and then
there were Property Updates from the National Trust.
Points of Note:
Scannable membership cards and car parking: NT is planning to introduce
carpark machines that will scan barcodes on membership cards. Annual
membership cards already have barcodes. Life members will be issued with
new barcoded cards within a year. Carparks will remain free for members.
NT promotion of Associations: NT to consider including information about
local Associations in new membership packs, to help promote membership of
local Associations.

Recruitment of new members to NT Associations & Committees: Even
when people retire they often have other commitments including looking after
grandchildren, and generally retire later in life, meaning fewer people are
available or interested in joining. It is people in their seventies and eighties
that are now joining Associations. The NT faces similar problems with getting
volunteers. Popular methods of recruitment were word of mouth, providing
information leaflets and placing them in farm shops and libraries.
Property updates:
White Cliffs: struggling with managing capacity, 12% increase in visitors in
the last year. Carpark space an issue. Tunnels and lighthouse have continued
to be open this year. Plans for new tunnels to allow access to a local beach.
Winchelsea: water voles discovered this year - thanks to time-lapse camera
from East Kent and kayaks donated by Rye & District Association! There will
be improvements to the farm and the canal.
Sissinghurst: main project will be repairs to tower, from September. Also,
repairs to moat wall by Gazebo. Now Year Four of Garden Renewal Project to
recapture more of Vita & Harold's spirit & vision. Little North Garden will open
to the public this year. Changes also to Lime Walk, Nuttery and Lion Pond.
Now new hardened paths on the estate, to make people feel more welcome
on the wider estate.
Smallhythe: new rose pergola installed. Pond re-instated. Improved Tea
Room. Still more Barn Theatre chairs to repair.
Lamb House: has been tenanted since acquired in 1950, but NT taking it
back in 2018. Plan to open it five days a week, March - October. It is now
open three days a week (previously, two afternoons a week only). Also plan to
restore the Garden Room.
Stoneacre: sad news, the tenant has passed away. Volunteers will continue
to open this season, however new tenants will need to be found in September.

Event Cancellations
adly, we had to cancel two events because insufficient numbers of members signed up to attend. The events were:
Thursday 15 June: Ritzy Royal Celebration
Wednesday 5 July: Outing to Quex House and Gardens
It could well be that your Committee just chose the wrong dates! Normally we do not have any events during June, July or August except for Walks and the annual Golf Day. Our members may well wish to take holidays or visit family and friends during these months.
I do know that some of you were keen to visit Quex House, and were disappointed that we had to cancel. So, we may well offer this outing again, either in the Spring or late Summer.

Article in Rye News Culture Section (Published 27 April)
PORTRAIT OF AN ARTIST FOR NT GROUP
he Rye and District Association supporter group of the National Trust
(RDNTA) held their penultimate lecture of the season in Brede village hall
on Thursday, April 20, about an artist once married to actress Ellen Terry who
owned a home locally, Smallhythe Place near Tenterden, now owned by the
National Trust (NT).
The Association were delighted to welcome
John Stevenson, a guide from Watts Gallery
near Guildford, who gave a comprehensive
talk on George and Mary Watts who opened
their gallery in 1904, a few months before
George’s death. Both George and Mary were
artists in their own right.
George’s career started when he was 10
years old and at the age of 17 he painted a
self portrait. He married Ellen Terry when she
was just 17, to save her from an actress’s life
(considered an unsuitable life for a young
woman), obviously unsuccessfully as Ellen
left George in less than a year and pursued
her acting career.
John continued by telling the audience how George had met Mary as an art
student and later married her when he was in his sixties and she was some
30 years younger.
The final lecture will be “My Career in Silver Smithing”, in Brede village hall,
starting at 2pm on Thursday, May 18. All are welcome.
The National Trust also owns Lamb House in Rye, formerly home to writers
Henry James and EF Benson, as well as other properties a short drive away in
Kent and Sussex – including writer Rudyard Kipling’s home at Burwash,
together with Bodiam Castle, Scotney Castle, and the garden at Sissinghurst
Castle, home to writers Vita Sackville-West and Harold Nicolson.

Spring Lunch Review
he Spring Lunch was held on Saturday 22 April at the popular venue of
the Powder Mills Hotel, Battle - and what a wonderful event it was!
If you have not attended one of these events, you really must do so next year.
For the extremely reasonable charge of £25 per person, we enjoyed a superb
three course lunch, and relaxed conversation, in a beautiful setting.

Theatre Review: Funny Girl
(At The Marlowe Theatre Canterbury on Thursday 4 May)
anny Brice was a real person. She was the daughter of Hungarian
immigrants. Her parents were part of a historical movement of people to
the land of the free. As many as five million Jews emigrated from Germany,
Poland and Russia in the nineteenth century. Many settled in Lower Eastside
tenements in New York. This is where Fanny was born and grew up exposed
to and absorbing Yiddish creativity and humour.
Natasha Barnes gave an inspired performance of Fanny’s determination and
drive for professional success and at the same time the tragic failure of her
private life and relationships with unscrupulous men.
We saw a very powerful show much enjoyed by all who went.

Fun Golf Day 2017
he date of our 2017 National Trust competition is FRIDAY 18 AUGUST. It
will be held on the beautiful Sedlescombe course followed by a wonderful
meal. If you are a keen golfer, please put the date in your diaries. The format
will be as last year, 4BBB off full handicap. Those members who played last
year will receive an entry form with this Newsletter. If you have not received
one, and would like to play, please contact me and I will send you one. You
will find my details inside the front cover.
Last year’s competition was a great success. We would like to repeat this as
the profit generated helps provide financial support to our wonderful local
National Trust properties. Get those swings going, and I hope to see you on

Outings
Firle Place - Tuesday 5 September
irle Place is an outstanding privately owned country house in Sussex that
dates from the time of Henry VIII but was substantially remodelled in the
18th Century. Firle has been the home of the Gage family for over 500 years.
Sheltered in the lee of the Sussex downland, Firle is a jewel in the South
Downs National Park. Today, Firle is lived in by Henry Nicholas, 8th Viscount
(b. 1934 -) and his family.
The house, gardens and notable collection of works of art and porcelain
are of national importance and will ensure a day to remember.
You will be interested to note there is a recently renovated tea room serving
home-made food and traditional English teas! Organic teas, creams and
medicinal balms, created by Lady Gage and produced from the herb garden
are available here too.
Our visit to Firle Place will include a guided tour of the house, lunch and an
opportunity to explore on our own and visit the private church. Lunch will be a
selection of sandwiches together with a cup of tea or coffee (please state any
special dietary requirements on the Booking Form in the back pages).
The cost of the trip is £30 per person for the visit, lunch and coach (including
gratuities).
This trip is not many weeks away, so early booking is essential!

Meet & Greet 2017 at Sissinghurst!
his year we are holding our Meet & Greet at Sissinghurst, on Friday 22
September, starting at 9:45am.
As many of you will know, this is an informal annual event that enables
members both old and new to meet each other and the Committee. Should
you know of anybody who is considering whether to join the Rye & District
Association, they would also be most welcome to come along.
So, come and enjoy a private garden tour, starting at 10:00am (prior to
the general public entry at 11:00am), followed by light refreshment in the
Granary Restaurant. This is a wonderful opportunity to visit the house
and enjoy the magnificent gardens!
By way of a thank you for fund raising efforts, there will be no charge - either
for entry to Sissinghurst, or the refreshments! (However, any donation on the
day would, of course, be welcome.) On entry, please advise that you are
attending the Rye & District Meet & Greet. Also, those of us who are
National Trust members, are asked to bring our membership cards.
We do need to advise Sissinghurst of our numbers, so to confirm that you will
be attending and whether you are bringing guests, please phone or email Ros
Adkins or complete and post the Booking Form in the back pages.
On behalf of my colleagues, I really look forward to seeing as many of you as
possible. It will also be a good opportunity for those who have recently joined
us to make new friends among more long-standing members.

Murder Mystery Quiz Night - Saturday 14 October
any of you will have attended our popular and successful annual Quiz
Nights in Beckley Village Hall, usually in November. This year your
Committee decided it would be fun to have a somewhat different quiz! So, this
year it will be a Murder Mystery Quiz Night, and in Brede Village Hall (not
Beckley).
The Murder Mystery will be presented by the Playden Players a group of
enthusiastic actors who devise, write and act “Murder Mysteries”. We have
been lucky to find a mutually convenient date for them to present a new play
for us in Brede Village Hall. Besides the play, the Players will prepare a short
quiz (with a prize for the winner), which will be placed on the team tables.
It will be at 7:00pm for a 7:30pm start, with, as usual, tables for teams of eight
people. You are welcome to make up your own group or to come as an
individual and join a mixed table.
The cost is £10 per person and includes a hot supper. Please bring your
own drinks, glasses and nibbles, plus any friends who wish to come along!
Payment can be collected and paid on the day by the team captains.
To book a table, or put your name down, please contact Julie Etches: either
phone 01797 225317 or email at: [email protected].

Theatre Trip: Sunset Boulevard
Marlowe Theatre, Canterbury, Wednesday 18 April, 2:30pm
he musical is based on a cult 1950 film, which was directed by Billy Wilder
and starred William Holden and Gloria Swanson. Cecil B DeMille also
played himself as a film director. The film received eleven academy awards.
The musical received a Tony Award and is considered one of Andrew Lloyd
Webber’s masterpieces. The story is one of obsession and romance. Ria
Jones (star of many of Lloyd Webber’s musicals) plays the lead character
Norma Desmond, a faded silent film goddess, living in a fantasy world in her
mansion. Into this fantasy world stumbles an impoverished writer, Joe Gills,
seduced by Norma’s life style. The show features some great songs such as
With One Look, The Greatest Star of All and Sunset Boulevard.
The cost of the theatre and coach combined is £54 per person. There is a five
to ten minute walk from the coach park to the theatre, along a path by the
river. The theatre has a pleasant restaurant for a light or full lunch. In the high
street, there is a vast choice of eating places.

Walking Group
Exercise
he older I get, the more attractive it becomes to sit and do nothing, but
although we have retired, opportunities to do nothing seem few and far
between.
Getting exercise and staying fit, we are told, is extremely important, and what
better way to achieve this than completing a five to six mile walk with your
friends. It seems that many of us have fitness trackers that compute every
detail of our walks (apart from the quality of the beer and the quiz) allowing a
sense of smugness when flopping on the settee in the evening! So far this
year we have been blessed with good weather on every one of our walks and
at Burwash, even though it had been tipping down at 9:00am, right on cue, the
sun appeared as we set off on a lovely walk past Bateman's. The accuracy of
weather forecasting these days means we can say with some certainty how
much rain we will get and at what time it will both arrive and stop, allowing a
decision to be made on whether a walk should be cancelled. Fortunately in the
last seven years such occurrences have been few and far between. Long may
it continue.
I can't believe it is the middle of summer and I am already having to think
about planning next year's walks. It has been suggested that I could simply
repeat some of the original walks from when the programme started back in
2011. Although several of the current group undertook those walks, with the
ageing process they probably wouldn't remember them anyway!

However, every walk is a chance to explore another footpath leading to who
knows where, and so for next year at least, I will endeavour to take us on new
routes even if we have to revisit a pub or two. If you have yet to make your
first outing with the walking group do give it a try. It's easy to dip your toe in
the water and who knows you may well be hooked!
Remaining 2017 Walks
nless stated otherwise all walks start at 10.30am and are approximately
five to six miles followed by lunch. There is a £2 charge for each walk
which includes entry to both the 'Guess the Steps' competition and the
lunchtime Trivia Quiz, and of course with luck you may recoup your
investment!
Thursday September 21st: The Gun and Spitroast Inn, Horsmonden. Lots of
orchards at apple picking time!
Tuesday October 24th: The Blacksmiths Inn, Ninfield. A mixture of fields and
woodland.
Thursday November 30th: Bonny Cravat, Woodchurch. Starts at 10am with
normal silly hats, prizes and will include a Christmas carvery.

Rye & District NT Association is on the INTERNET!
e have a web-page on the National Trust website, and we have entries
in the online community newspaper 'Rye News'. Also, we are in the
process of developing our own Facebook group.
Our National Trust Website Page
www.nationaltrust.org.uk/features/rye-and-district-association
The page is principally to attract new members. It explains who we are and
what we do. However, it is also a useful resource for our members, because it
provides online access to view and download:
our current Events List
our latest Newsletter
and, our Membership Form
Our web-page can be accessed directly by either of the following:
typing the above link into a web-browser
going to the National Trust website and using the search facility at the
very top of the page, right hand side, to search on 'Rye supporter
group'
or, by a 'Google' search for 'Rye National Trust Association'
Our Facebook Page
Our Facebook page is now live, although there is not yet much on
it! We would like you to help to make it a success. The purpose is
to keep our 'online' members informed of activities, and to share
photos and other information. Only members will be given
access to post and comment within the group.
If you are already a Facebook user, you can find our page here:
https://www.facebook.com/Ryenationaltrust/ . Save it as a 'favourite', and take
the opportunity to help us make it a useful means of communication, and so
attract new members.
If Facebook is something you have to date avoided, think of it as a web page
that can be instantly updated by any of its members, who can view and post
photos, make comments, ask questions, access current and past newsletters
and other useful documents.
W
- 28 -
If you want to try it, you will need to create a 'Facebook Account'. But, you
don't need to get involved in any of the inane nonsense that many of us
associate with the 'younger facebook-generation' - nor do you need to share
any of your personal details with anyone else. You can also, if you wish,
switch off all notifications and only view the page as you would any other web
page. If there is demand from our members, we will create a step by step
guide on how to use Facebook, and which settings need to be altered, for
those that wish to ensure privacy, and only wish to use it to access our page.
Monthly Email Update
We endeavour to issue a Monthly Email to briefly summarise up-coming
events, and also update members with any significant news, prior to the
subsequent Newsletter. Unfortunately BT issues with bulk emailing is currently
creating problems that we are still working to resolve.
Rye News online Community Newspaper
Rye News ( www.ryenews.org.uk ) includes a 'What's on Guide', and we are
now putting all our events into this calendar. Additionally we plan to submit
articles and photographs from time to
time.
We also have an advertisement which
appears on various pages, in rotation with
others, either on the right hand side, or at
the bottom if viewed on a smartphone.
Click on the Advert, and you are taken
directly to our National Trust web-page.
The Advert is principally to attract new
members.
John Wright & Phil Maynard
If you are unaware of Rye News, I do encourage you to take a look.
"Rye News is a not-for-profit enterprise being run by volunteers with the purpose of
benefiting the local community. It provides a forum to discuss issues and promotes Rye
and the surrounding area to a local and wider audience. Rye’s online newspaper is
here to showcase what is positive about our town and the villages about us. Within our
area, a wide circle of about eight miles, Rye News represents an open invitation to all
residents, businesses and voluntary organisations to keep us all informed."
