Hunters Hill Ryde Men’s ShedThe modern day Men’s Shed is an updated version of the shed in the backyard that has long been a part of Australian culture.

Others just like to drop in for a cuppa and a chat.

Members of Men’s Sheds come from all walks of life – the bond that unites them is that they are men with time on their hands who would like something meaningful to do with that time in an atmosphere of old-fashioned mateship.

A Marriage of Art and Lettering

Writing makes thinking visible and expresses who we are. Yet for most of us, how we write is limited to typing in Arial or Times New Roman.

A new exhibition of works by the Australian Society of Calligraphers demonstrates the beauty of self-expression in ink, and goes further by integrating art.

Art expresses the visions that are beyond the capacity of just words and explores the emotional dimension of our lives.

At this exhibition you can experience the shaping of how we talk and the formatting of visions of our future, through the marriage of art and lettering.

When: Exhibition opens on Thursday 27 September at 6.00pm, then daily until Saturday 6 October (except Sundays and the public holiday Monday), 10.00am – 4.00pm Where: See Street Gallery, See Street, Meadowbank

Public NoticeDevelopment Control Plan 2010 – Part 9.6 Tree PreservationOn 21 August 2012, Council considered the draft Urban Forest Policy, draft Development Control Plan (DCP) 2010 – Part 9.6 Tree Preservation, the companion Technical Manual and all submissions which were received concerning the Plan.

The Plan was adopted and will come into effect on Monday 1 October 2012.

The DCP 2010 Part 9.6 Tree Preservation changes the controls applicable to the preservation and management of trees within the City of Ryde.

Tree PermitsFrom Monday 1 October, you will need to apply for a Tree Permit to:

prune a treeremove a treealter the soil levels close to a tree.

In general, a tree is covered by DCP 2010 Part 9.6 Tree Preservation if it is five metres tall or has a stem circumference of 450mm at 1.4 metres from ground level.

Some tree species and tree works will be exempt. If these exemptions apply then you may prune, remove or change the soil levels around a tree without making any kind of application. The current Notice of Intent process will no longer apply.

The requirement to obtain a Tree Permit before altering soil levels is new. You will need to calculate the tree protection zone area around your trees. Any amendment to levels within that zone will require a permit.

Development Application ApprovalIf you live in a heritage conservation area, or if your property is listed as a heritage item, you will need to obtain Development Application approval before starting any tree works.

You can read the Plan at www.ryde.nsw.gov.au/trees. You can also view a hard copy at the Customer Service Centre at Ryde Civic Centre during normal business hours.

BRINGING BACK THE BUSH AT SCHOOLIf ‘a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush’, then Holy Cross College Ryde will soon boast a whole flock!

The City of Ryde has been working in partnership with the College as part of the ‘River to River Corridors’ project.

The aim of this project is to establish new habitats and enhance existing habitats for birds and other fauna in our City by reconnecting fragments of bushland between the Lane Cove and Parramatta Rivers.

An area of the Holy Cross College grounds has been identified by the project bird ecologist as strategic for the River to River project. So a committed group of students, supported by one of their teachers and the headmaster, have been working to create a new micro-corridor for local wildlife on the site.

The students have volunteered their time to plant the 60 square metre site along Cressy Road, Ryde with several thousand native plants that will provide food and habitat for small birds.

This micro-corridor will assist in reconnecting the wider local network of bushland corridors.

Want to help? You and your family can be part of this project too. By planting native plants in your garden you will be enhancing these vital wildlife corridors and assisting the survival of local fauna and flora.

You will also be helping us achieve our goal of making the City of Ryde a city of environmental sensitivity, where we work together as a community to protect and enhance our natural environment for the future.

The River to River Wildlife Corridors project is funded by the NSW Environmental Trust and run by the City of Ryde and Hunter’s Hill Councils in partnership with the Sydney Metropolitan Catchment Management Authority.

For further information go to www.ryde.nsw.gov.au/rivertoriver or call 9952 8222 for your free guide to planting natives and tips to assist small birds.
