Athlete Biography

Alongside fellow Rio 2016 Team member Emma Mo䘀䤃att, Erin Densham will become the 䘀쐂rst

Australian triathlete to compete at three Olympic Games in Rio as she looks to improve on her

London 2012 bronze medal.

Densham competed in swimming and cross country at state level when at school and decided to

combine her strengths at 16 when she took up triathlon. She announced herself on the world

triathlon scene when she won the U/23 World Championship in Switzerland.

Winning the Triathlon Australia Emerging Athlete of the Year in 2007, Densham went on to

compete at her 䘀쐂rst Olympic Games in Beijing alongside Emma Snowsill and Emma Mo䘀䤃att, where

she 䘀쐂nished 22nd on debut.

In 2009, Densham was diagnosed with supraventricular tachycardia (racing heartbeat) and was

forced to drop out of several major competitions and eventually have surgery. Making a

remarkable recovery, Densham proved herself at the 2010 French Triathlon Club Championships

with a series of consistent performances which saw the now 31-year-old was selected on her

second Olympic Team.

Densham went on to claim the bronze medal at London in a thrilling sprint 䘀쐂nish and will be

looking to impress again at Rio in her third Olympic bid.

Ryan Fisher

Athlete Biography

Ryan Fisher is set to make his Olympic debut in the men’s triathlon after an explosive start to the

2016 season.

A keen soccer player during his school years, Fisher was introduced to the sport of triathlon at age

12 but claimed out of all the sports he played growing up, triathlon was his least favourite. At the

end of his Year 12 studies, Fisher seriously considered moving overseas to play football but picked

triathlon instead and hasn’t looked back.

At the end of the 2014 season, Fisher had planned to retire from the sport. After being selected in

the elite team for World Championships, the 25-year-old fell ill and couldn’t compete. After three

months o䘀䤃 Fisher re-assessed and came back, more determined than ever claiming the third ITU

Triathlon World Cup of the 2015 season in Chengdu, China.

Fisher 䘀쐂nished only one place behind Ryan Bailie in fourth at the 2016 World Triathlon Series race

on the Gold Coast, which doubled as an automatic quali䘀쐂cation event for the 䘀쐂rst Aussie to cross

the line in the top ten.

Hailing from Kenmore Hills in Brisbane, Fisher says his 䘀쐂rst Olympic memory was Michael Klim

winning Gold in the Sydney Olympics.

Ashleigh Gentle

Athlete Biography

After a number of stellar performances over the past season, Ashleigh Gentle will make her

Olympic debut in the women’s triathlon at Rio.

A strong runner during her school days, a family friend convinced Gentle to try triathlon and after

having a go at the swimming and cycling legs she was hooked.

The 25-year-old, had a brilliant junior career with two silver medals at the Junior World

Championships in 2007 and 2008. It wasn’t until 2010 that Gentle was crowned Junior World

Champion in Budapest, a moment when she decided she wanted to take up the sport as a

profession.

After recording more than ten top 10 䚦꜎nishes in the World Triathlon Series in 2012 and 2013,

Gentle was selected in the 2014 Commonwealth Games Team to represent Australia in Glasgow.

The Gold Coast girl, con䚦꜎rmed she had her sights set on Rio when she claimed a silver medal at the

2015 Yokohama World Triathlon Series race. In what was the last race before selection, Gentle

again 䚦꜎nished in second place on the same course in 2016. When she’s not competing Gentle

enjoys spending time with partner and long-course triathlete Josh Amberger.

Emma Mo쳿att

Athlete Biography

Beijing bronze medallist Emma Mo쳿att will make Australian Olympic history by becoming the rst

triathlete to compete at three Olympic Games after she secured automatic nomination in her

home-town of the Gold Coast.

Beginning triathlon at the age of 13, Mo쳿att followed in both her parents' footsteps as she rose

through the junior ranks to come 4th and then 2nd at the 2005 and 2006 U/23 World

Championships. She was named the Australian Triathlete of the Year in 2007 when she came

runner-up in the World Cup series and 4th at the World Championships.

Moore born Mo쳿att sent a strong message at the start of the Olympic year claiming the Oceania

Championship title before nishing 7th at the World Triathlon Series to secure her Olympic

nomination.

The Queensland-based triathlete rose to the top of the international ranks when she claimed back-

to-back World Championship titles in 2009 and 2010. Her Beijing 2008 performance highlighted the

strength of Australian female triathletes, as Emma Snowsill took home gold ahead of Mo쳿att in

third. The 31-year-old will be looking to rectify her London 2012 performance in Rio after a heavy

crash in the bike leg around Hyde Park forced her to withdraw from the event.

Mo쳿att will aim to continue the green and gold women’s triathlon legacy, with Australia winning a

medal at every Olympics since Sydney 2000. Mo쳿att’s partner, sprint canoeist Daniel Bowker, is

also on the 2016 Australian Olympic Team.
