1.3 Proper useThe ows is intended to be used for the separation of dispersed oil-water mixtures.Emulsified and dissolved hydrocarbons cannot be separated out with this plant.

IMPORTANT!The plant (or pump) may not be used to pump oil or sludge.Ecologically dangerous!

1.4 EmissionsThe oily water system has a continuous noise level below 70 dB(A).

1.5 Sources of risk

DANGER!Electric voltage > 42 VDirect contact with live parts may cause serious injury or death.Disconnect the power supply before working on electrical installations (switch off atthe main switch, remove or switch off fuses).

WARNING!The ows works with an eccentric screw pump. Do not touch the gear casing / stuff-ing box packing on the rotating shaft! Doing so risks severe injuries to thefingers.

WARNING!The backwash water entry valve (fig. 4; 5 and 15) is closed by a tensed spring. Dis-assemble very carefully to avoid having the spring jump out and cause injury.

CAUTIONThe ows can be heated (either electrically or, e.g., by steam). Temperatures up toaround 50 C. can then obtain in the upper part, which could cause burns if touched.

2 Important technical notes• An ows must be operated and maintained according to this Information if it is to operate re-

liably.• We are not liable for any damage arising from improper use, or installing or the disregard-

ing of this Information.• The electrical connection values clearly displayed on the automatic-control box must be ad-

hered to.• The ows is designed for a water mixture temperature between min. +2 and max. 45 C.

IMPORTANT!The ows pump is designed for a maximum temperature of + 45 C. Temperaturesabove this lead to excessive motor starting torque due to material expansion in therotating parts which could cause major damage to the motor.

• The pump rotates to the right when viewed from the motor.

IMPORTANT!During initial operation:incorrect rotation direction leads to the pump running dry and over-heating can thendestroy the stator after just a few revs.

• Compressed air (6 - 8 bar) and backwash water (1 bar, max. 1.5 bar) are needed to oper-ate the ows. Water flow pressure should not be less than 0.5 bar.

• The plant is to be kept free of solids.• Avoid emulsions! If absolutely unavoidable, use only separator-friendly cleaners recom-

mended by RWO.• If the site is subject to frost, the plant must be completely emptied after every use or kept

warm at all times.• Clean all pipelines and bilges before starting up for the first time.

Use only original RWO spares in order to guarantee operating and functional safety (this isa pre-requisite of the IOPP Certificate, see Fig. 3.2).

• Ensure safe, environment-friendly disposal in conformity with all applicable laws of all resi-dues and waste after repair work.!

3 Important general information

3.1 What’s it all about?Water is essential to humans, animals and plants and not available in infinite quantity.Nature saw to it that there was enough water for all who needed it until we humans en-tered the industrial age.Ever more water was consumed or contaminated as population density increased and in-dustrialisation advanced. Mother Nature can no longer produce enough water of adequatequality for all. There will never be a complete return to nature, so most ecological prob-lems are only solvable with the help of modern technology.RWO does not propagate abandoning growth and production. Our philosophy concen-trates more on conceiving technology to solve problems on the borderline between ecol-ogy and economy. Our strategy is backed up by numerous successful plants supplied byus world-wide and a comprehensive range of modern technological solutions for con-serving the environment.

3.2 Maritime regulationsThe IMO (International Maritime Organisation), the maritime UNO agency, passed theMARPOL(Marine Pollution) Agreement on the prevention of marine pollution by oil in1973. Over 70 states with more than 90% of the world’s merchant marine fleet have sincethen ratified the convention. This agreement obliges merchant marine vessels to have an IOPP - (International OilPollution Prevention) certificate. In order to obtain this certificate, a vessel must employ abilge ows complying with Resolution MEPC 60(33). MARPOL signatory states have theright to bar vessels not in possession of such a certificate, issued by their national gov-ernment, from onward passage.

3.3 Type certificationThe RWO SKIT aquaclean "S" has been type-certificated by the Germanischen Lloyd. The certification per IMO Resolution MEPC 60(33) itself was issued by the SBG (GermanMariners’ Association).National type-certification has been obtained for the countries shown below. The list is notfinal, further national certification having been applied for.

3.4 Separator-friendly detergents/cleanersDetergents often transform oil-water mixtures into stable emulsions not separable bygravity and coalescence. We have performed exhaustive detergent tests on our plant un-der field conditions. Several of the multitude of products available on the market weretested, and those listed below proved relatively good when used on our plant:

1. RWO multiclean Quick Sep2. Drewclean 2000, Drew Ameroid Marine Division Ashland Chemical, Inc3. Tegeral Des Flüssig, Tegee-Chemie GmbH4. Tegeral Forte, Tegee-Chemie GmbH5. 4 Functional description

4.1 Standard owsThe RWO SKIT aquaclean "S" ows utilises a completely new flow control principle. Thelatest scientific discoveries on oil-in-water dispersion, homogenous flow mechanisms andcoalescence effects are built into the SKIT aquaclean "S" ows.The MONO pump (Fig. 14) sucks out the bilge through the SKIT aquaclean "S". This flowavoids any unnecessary additional mixing of oil and water due to turbulence set up by thepump ahead of the gravity ows. Coarse separation takes place in the first stage of theSKIT aquaclean "S" by a process utilising the differing densities of oil and water to a muchgreater extent than hitherto.A new and extremely porous coalescer efficiently performs fine separation of even thesmallest drops of oil thanks to its extremely oleophile surface. The residual oil contentvalues of down to below 1 ppm achieved in the type certification tests prove the very highefficiency of the SKIT aquaclean “S”.The oil separated out collects in the upper settling zone of the ows. An efficient heatingsystem (Fig. 10) warms this area to support the separation process, make the oil pum-pable and protect the electrodes against clogging. The RWO sensor electrode (Fig. 9) measures the level of the collected oil. As soon as apre-set level has been reached, the RWO automatic level control (Fig. 3) opens the oildischarge valve and the backwash water inlet valve (Fig. 15) so that the backwash waterpressure can flush the oil to the oil collection tank. The backwash process is then initiated. The backwash water inlet valve (Fig. 15) and the backwash water outlet valve (Fig. 5) arethen opened and the high-performance coalescer is backwashed with clean water. De-oiling intervals and backwash cycle times are so set that the SKIT aquaclean "S" is gen-erally maintenance-free and requires no monitoring. The pump (Fig. 14) and heating system shut off automatically during the oil flushing andbackwashing procedure.

The automatic control box (Fig. 3) is built onto the SKIT aquaclean “S”. All plant parts aresupplied complete with piping and wiring and ready to operate.Control is by a main switch. All processes are automatic and require no monitoring. Our high-performance RWO ows SKIT aquaclean "S" system is designed for rugged useonboard.

4.2 15 ppm alarm for ows

The SKIT aquaclean "S" ows can be supplied with a 15 ppm Alarm (Fig. 17) as an option. Themonitor works on the light scatter principle and can be relied on to give warning when free oilparticles or oil-in-water emulsions cause the 15 ppm limit to be exceeded. When the alarm istriggered, the pneumatic 3-way valve (Fig. 23) is switched via a dead contact to re-circulationmode after the set time interval has elapsed to prevent possible outboard oil contamination.

5 Operating the plant

5.1 Before commissioning5.1.1 Checking electrical connections

DANGER!Electrical voltage > 42 VDirect contact with live parts may lead to severe injury or death.Fixed connections to the onboard mains may only be installed by qualifiedstaff (electricians).

DANGER!Risk of explosion.Standard plant may not be operated in the vicinity.

5.1.2 Compressed-air connections, backwash water connections and all flangeconnections must be checked for tightness. Tighten casing cover screws ifnecessary.

CAUTION!Pressurised piping is dangerous.Release the pressure completely before working on them.

IMPORTANT!The SKIT aquaclean "S" operates by suction. Ensure that the ows does notsuck air via leaks in the suction piping and/or flange connections on the owscasing. Sucking in air initiates endless backwashing, which means the owscannot suck in wastewater and therefor cannot separate water and oil as de-signed.

5.1.3 Checking presence of wastewater..

IMPORTANT!The "OPERATIONMODE / BILGE LEVEL" control light is designed as a vis-ual display of the existence of wastewater. The ows is equipped ex works with two bridges between the clamps X2-4and X2-5 as well as X2-6 and X2-7. The ows may only be started whenbridged. We recommend replacing the two bridges with two swimmer switches (topand bottom levels) in the bilge or bilge water tank and installing the ows level-dependant above them. Both floating switches must have closing functions. When the level climbs, they must both close in sequence; only then the owswill start. When the level drops, both must open again in sequence; only thenthe ows does stop.

Page 9: RWO oily water separator User’s information · The RWO SKIT aquaclean "S" ows utilises a completely new flow control principle. The latest scientific discoveries on oil-in-water

User’s Information for oily water separater SKIT/S 8. Edition V301102022 Page 9

RWO GmbH, Bremen P. Gross Issue – 16.01.04

Alternatively, a single swimmer switch can be used instead of two. In thiscase, the clamps X2-6 and X2-7 must remain bridged and the swimmer beconnected to the X2-4 and X2-5 clamps. It must have a closing function. When the level climbs, the switch must close before the ows will start. If thelevel sinks, it must close before the ows will stop.

5.1.4 Ensure compressed air supply (about 6-8 bar) and backwash water supply (1 bar, max.1.5 bar).

5.1.5 Open the valves in the suction piping.

5.1.6 Open the valves in the clear water piping outboard.

IMPORTANT!The pump is of the positive displacement type. Do not attempt to pumpin opposition to closed valves.

5.1.7 Check pump rotation direction.

IMPORTANT!When re-starting or starting after long disuse, make sure the pump isturned easily by the drive motor. Should this not be the case, e.g. due tohigh adhesion between rotor and stator when new, adjust the shaft behindthe gland with a suitable tool.

WARNING!Do not touch the gearing casing or stuffing-box packing when the shaft isturning, as this would risk injury to the fingers.

IMPORTANT!The pump’s correct direction of rotation is to the RIGHT when viewedfrom the motor. Allowing it to rotate in the wrong direction may cause itto run dry.Using the wrong rotation direction may damage the stator after just afew revs. The pump will not be started by the control system until the owscasing is full of water.

DANGER!Electric voltage > 42 VDirect contact with live parts may cause major injury or death.Reversing the direction of rotation by swapping polarity may only be under-taken by qualified electricians.

5.1.8 Checking manometers. The manometers are provided with a glycerine leakage protection. For a pressureequalisation in the manometer case you must cut off the nipples at the upper rub-ber cap with a scissors before the first set up.

5.2 Before every start5.2.1 Check for the presence of wastewater.

IMPORTANT!The "Wastewater" control light is designed as a visual display of it’s pres-ence. See the exhaustive description under 5.1.3

5.2.2 Make sure the compressed air and backwash water supply is in order.

5.2.3 Open the valves in the suction piping.

5.2.4 Open the valves in the clear water line outboard.

IMPORTANT!The pump is of the positive displacement type and should never beused in opposition to a closed valve.

5.3. CommissioningThe following illustration shows the control facia on the front door of the switchbox. Ad-here to the following procedure when commissioning:

• Main switch "Power" on.• Control light " RED-

OILDISCHARGE " lightsred (oil to collection tank),as the electrode registersboth air and oil.

• The pneumatic pistonvalves on the backwashwater inlet (Fig. 15) andoil outlet (Fig. 4) areopened, and the plant fillsautomatically with back-wash water and simulta-neously vented of airthrough the oil outlet. Thepump remains shut offduring this process.

• As soon as the waterlevel reaches the sensorelectrode (Fig. 9), thecontrol light changes toorange “ ORANGE-FLUSHING ” (backwashing). The pneumatic piston valve (Fig. 5)opens and closes the oil outlet valve after a timed delay (Fig. 4).

• The valves close as soon as the plant is full. The control light " GREENWATERDISCHARGE " lights green on the automatic-control box (water outboard). The pump then starts and begins sucking from the bilge. The ows is now ready foruse.

• The heating can now be turned on with the "Heater" switch.

5.4 Automatic function test (of the automatic oil discharge)

Pressing the "Test" button for at least 3 seconds caused oil to be simulated at the elec-trode and makes it possible to discharge oil manually and initiate the backwashing cycle. The reverse procedure is impossible( simulate water at the electrode during automatic oildischarge or manually close the oil outlet valve by pressing the button).Proceed as follows to test the automatic mechanism:Hold the "Test" down for a min. 3 sec. The " RED-OILDISCHARGE" illuminates (oil tocollection tank). The oil discharge valve (Fig. 4) and backwash water inlet valve (Fig. 15)open. The pump (Fig. 14) and the heating (Fig. 10) shut down. The discharge cycle con-tinues as long as the button is held down. When released, the control light colour changesfrom red to orange, the backwash water outlet valve (Fig. 5) opens and the ows flusheswith the delay set, the backwash water inlet valve remaining open. The plant flushes tothe time-scale set (10-30 sec.) and then closes the backwash water in- and out-let valves.Pump and heating are switched back on and the ows operates in automaticmode.

6 Troubleshooting

6.1 Warnings

DANGER!Electric voltage > 42 VDirect contact with live parts may cause serious injury or death.Work on live parts should only b e carried out by qualified electricians.

WARNING!Pressurised piping is dangerous.Check and make sure that pipes are unpressurised before working on them.

WARNING!The ows uses an eccentric screw pump. Do not touch the gearing casing or stuffingbox packing whilst the shaft is turning as this may cause serious injury to the fin-gers.

WARNING!The backwash inlet valve is spring-loaded. Dis-assemble very carefully to avoid in-jury from the spring.

CAUTION!The ows can be heated (electrically, by steam or by thermal oil). This leads to tem-peratures up to 60 C in the upper part, which should not be touched to avoid burns.
