CHRISTMAS MESSAGE 2019The mystery of Christmas is a drawing near to God, or rather God drawing nearer to us. Scripture reminds us that the condition for

entering the kingdom of God is to become a child in relation to God (Catholic Catechism 526). Only when Christ is fully formedinuswillthemysteryofChristmasbefulfilled.Wemustseek, and desire a deeper relationship with him. This became possible for us at Christmas, the birth of Jesus, a marvelous exchange!Thomas a Kempis explains it like this:

The one who has from eternity been in the bosom of the Fatheris now resting on his mother’s knees.God is so close to youthat he lets himself be embraced like a childand held like a baby at the breast-for“theWordbecamefleshanddweltamongus.”How is it possible for him to be more like youand more closely related to you?Look, hehasyourfleshandbones!God has become your brother.

If God really entered our history, then history must be fundamentally changed. God is my brother and your brother and this changes everything! We are Christ’s brothers and sisters, men and women who became related to God. This relationship with Jesus is something immeasurable, so that we can never value it highly enough. Then let Christ Jesus be formed in us more and more! Let us humble ourselves and be “born of God!” This is indeed a day of rejoicing. “Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests!”A Holy and Blessed Christmas to you!Fr. Matt

The Fourth Sunday of Advent Catechism Corner “The Father’s only Son, conceived as man in the womb of the Virgin Mary, is ‘Christ’ that is to say, anointed by the Holy Spirit, from the beginning of his human existence, though the manifestation of this fact takes place only progressively: to the shepherds, to the magi, to John the Baptist, to the disciples. [Cf. Mt. 1:20; 2:1-12; Lk. 1:35; 2:8-20; Jn. 1:31-34; 2:11] Thus the Whole life of Jesus Christ will make manifest ‘how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power.” [Acts 10:38] (CCC, 486) The Catechism of the Catholic Church

The Nativity of the Lord (Christmas) “Jesus was born in a humble stable, into a poor family.202 Simple shepherds were the first witnesses to this event. In this poverty heaven’s glory was made manifest.203 The Church never tires of singing the glory of this night: ‘The Virgin today brings into the world the Eternal/ And the earth offers a cave to the Inaccessible./ The angels and shepherds praise him/ And the magi advance with the star,/ For you are born for us,/ Little Child, God eternal!”204 (CCC, 525) “The Word became flesh so that thus we might know God’s love: ‘In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him.72 For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life’.”73 (CCC, 458) “The Church thus confesses that Jesus is inseparable true God and true man. He is truly the Son of God who, without ceasing to be God and Lord, became a man and our brother: ‘What he was, he remained and what he was not, he assumed,’ sings the Roman Liturgy.95 And the liturgy of St. John Chrysostom proclaims and sings: ‘O only-begotten Son and Word of God, immortal being, you who deigned for our salvation to become incarnate of the holy Mother of God and ever-virgin Mary…you who are one of the Holy Trinity, glorified with the Father and the Holy Spirit, save us!”96 (CCC469) These excerpts from the Catechism of the Catholic Church speak about the mystery of our salvation, the Trinity, eternal life, and God’s infinite love for us. Take some time today and throughout this week to ponder these truths. Ask God for an increase in His gifts of Faith, Hope, and Love [Theological Virtues] so that “you may have the power to comprehend, with all the saints, what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.” [Eph. 3:18-19] [202: Cf. Lk 2:6-7. ; 203 Cf. Lk 2:8-20. ; 204 Kontakion of Romanos the Melodist.] [72 1 Jn 4:9. ; 73 Jn 3:16.] [95 LH, January 1, Antiphon for Morning Prayer; ct. ST. Leo the Great, Sermo in nat. Dom. 1, 2; PL 54, 191-192. ; 96 Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom, Troparion “O monogenes.”]

Reconciliation: The Sacrament of Healing and Restoration. During this season of Advent we are given the opportunity to examine our lives and to assess our relationship with God and others. If we are separated in any way, if our relationships are strained or broken, God asks us to be reconciled and be restored to wholeness.

Penance helps aid us in the restoration process. Ultimately, God is our healer and restorer. And God uses our cooperation with His grace to bring these about in and through us.

There will be an opportunity this week to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation, on Wednesday, December 18th at 7 pm in the church.

exploring THE SUNDAY READINGSGOD IS WITH US: FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT

FIRST READING SECOND READING GOSPEL

ISAIAH 7:10-14

The virgin shall conceive, and bear a son.

Finally! We come to a set of Advent readings that point straight as an arrow toward the day of hope’s arrival. True, this story of King Ahaz refusing the counsel of his advisor Isaiah happened seven centuries before the time of Jesus. But Isaiah always had an ear cocked to the future, his gaze fixed on celestial visions and undreamt of possibilities. His prophecies bulge with wonderful potentials and also fearful suffering ahead. Each step of human history is a step toward one or the other. King Ahaz says no to visions of any kind. He’s more concerned with military strategies than prophetic births. He’d have paid more attention if Isaiah had counseled: “Move your troops farther north” or “Make a treaty while you still can:’ Ahaz wasn’t anxious to know how God figured into the scheme of things. All he knew was, Emmanuel was not a manual for political success.

ROMANS 1:1-7

Paul, a slave of Christ Jesus ... set apart for the gospel of God ....

On one side of history stand King Ahaz and his kind. Such people seek to control the future and make use of religion only so far as it gets them what they want. On the other side of history are folks like Paul. Paul surrenders to God’s service and allows himself to be used purely for divine purposes. Because Paul has full confidence in the God he’d come to know in Christ Jesus, Paul is willing to go anywhere, do anything, and be anything God might desire. So Paul could be apostle, slave, migrant preacher, tentmaker, miracle worker, arrested criminal, epistle writer ... all the way to beheaded felon for Christ’s sake. Paul is, in Christ, a genuinely free man. That kind of freedom is rarely seen. Most of us are enslaved by other roles: breadwinner, responsible adult, churchgoer, mortgage payer. On second thought, Paul’s slavery is rather attractive.

MATTHEW 1:18-24

When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded.

Christmas has many starting points. You could say it started with the annunciation of the Lord or Joseph’s dream. Maybe it started years earlier when some astronomers from the East studied the sky and saw a new star that fascinated them. Maybe it really began centuries ago when Isaiah had his weary conversation with King Ahaz and told him Emmanuel was the answer he was looking for. Perhaps Christmas began with the establishment of the ruling house of David. Or it could have started when a new nation was promised to a man from Chaldea called Abram. Perhaps Christmas was already in the mind of God when sin first corrupted the paradise that was creation. Maybe it was always abundantly clear, from a celestial perspective, that what humans broke, only God could fix. All we know is, because everyone played their part on cue, we’re celebrating Emmanuel again this week.
