Lugar destacado: Ermita del Santo CristoRecientemente construida (1996) sobre los restos de otra antigua ermita que se ubicaba en el mismo lugar. Una vecina de la localidad se encarga del mantenimiento. El camino que da acceso a la ermita pasa junto al lavadero público y, tomando una pequeña vereda, nos lleva a la zona conocida como las pilas. En el diccionario de Pascual Madoz se nombra una ermita, pro-bablemente la que se asentaba en el mismo sitio, denominado Ermita del Calvario. El lugar presenta una de las vistas más completas del Valle del Genal.

The best of Algatocín: Santo Cristo HermitageTThe Hermitage was built in 1996 over the remains of another old hermita-ge placed here. A neighbour of the town is in charge of its maintenance. The way that gives access to the Hermitage goes by the old washing place and, walking on a small path, we will arrive at the area known as the basins (“Las pilas”). In Pascual Madoz dictionary, a hermitage is mentioned and it is probably located at the same place; it was called the Hermitage of El Calva-rio. From this place, you can see one of the most complete views of the Genal valley.

The municipality of Algatocín extends from East to West on the flanks of the mountain range that separate the Genal and Guadiaro rivers. The peculiar urban layout owes its origins to the Moors who gave origin to this villa. The town is built in a staircase shape in order to fit the steep terrains of the area. Whitewashed houses and green chestnut trees, ilexes and cork oaks paint this terrains of colour.

The stThe streets are steep, narrow, and sinuous; there are 18th century houses with their porticoed façades and heraldic shields. The church of Nuestra Señora del Rosario, crowned by a shining blue mosaic cap ceiling, was built as a hallmark of people from Algatocín.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Recommended walk:The staThe starting point is located in Fuente street. Just at the beginning of our walk, you can see on your left the San Antonio fountain. Then, turn on your right lea-ving Alta street back to reach the Alameda de Andalucía, one of the most crow-ded areas of the town. Continue on by the Andalucía avenue, wider part, to stroll about the low-lying neighbourhood. The amazing views on your right of the Genal valley will, for sure, catch your attention. Then continue walking by La Fuente square and Pérez Jiménez street. A smooth slope will be perceived, although it would not make you stop. Going through Guardia street, you will come out onto the church of Nuestra Señora del Rosario. From here, go to Barrio Alto street to take you back to the starting point.

Las tierras de Algatocín se extienden de este a oeste a lomos de la sierra que separa los ríos Genal y Guadiaro. Su peculiar estructura urbana, he-rencia de los pueblos bereberes que dieron origen a la villa, se escalona adaptándose al empinado terreno dando una blanca pincelada de sus casas sobre el verde de castaños, encinas y alcornoques.

Sus calles empinadas, estrechas y sinuosas; casas dieciochescas con sus fachadas porticadas y escudos heráldicos. Como seña de identidad se le-vanta sobre el pueblo la iglesia de Ntra. Sra. del Rosario, coronada por un brillante de mosaicos azules.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Paseo Recomendado:Iniciamos la ruta en la calle Fuente. Nada más dar nuestros primeros pasos dejamos la fuente de San Antonio a nuestra izquierda. Giraremos a la derecha dejando la calle Alta para llegar a la Alameda de Andalucía; es una de las zonas más transitadas del pueblo. Ahora tomaremos la avenida de Andalucía, de más anchura, para recorrer el barrio bajo. Llama podero-samente la atención los paisajes del valle del Genal a nuestra derecha. Pa-saremos por plaza de la Fuente y la calle Pérez Jiménez. Los pasos se hacen ahora más pesados por la pequeña pendiente que estamos superan-do, pero sin llegar a grandes rampas. Desembocaremos desde la calle Guardia a la Iglesia Nuestra Señora del Rosario y desde aquí, a la calle Barrio Alto para llegar de nuevo a nuestro punto de salida.
