The figure summarizes key steps in the application of Pinch Technology for efficiency improvement of a process. Data preparation translates heat and material balance information into thermal information relevant for Pinch Analysis. The next step involves analysis of efficiency improvements due to improved heat recovery, better use of utilities and process modifications. This analysis is based on targets. The analysis identifies key options for improvement and estimates the benefit due to these options. The ideas for improvement are screened using preliminary economic analysis. The selected options are then implemented in terms of specific design improvements using pinch design rules. This is followed by detailed engineering and implementation.
We construct “composite” curves by merging the T-H representations of various streams. First we merge the hot streams into a Hot Composite Curve. We do this by effectively splitting the “hot” side of the process into temperature intervals and adding up the stream duties that lie within each interval. Interval temperatures are simply all the start and end temperatures of the streams involved.
We can now bring the two curves together in one T-H diagram and treat them just like we treated single hot and cold streams. We can slide the curves horizontally, as long as we don’t violate the selected DTmin for the process

We continue with our strategy of doing the most difficult tasks first. Set Targets: It is still possible to have a network that uses more than this amount, even when Tmin is satisfied. It is important to note that the targets were obtained purely on the basis of stream data and Tmin specification. In general, starting from the heat and material balance of a process, we can obtain the minimum energy targets prior to any network design modifications. Composite Curves help us to set target prior to design Identify process changes: We can now predict the area requirement for the whole problem by summing up the area requirements of all enthalpy intervals. Strictly speaking, the area calculated with this model is only minimum when all the stream heat transfer coefficients are equal. In general, however, the model provides a close to minimum surface area requirement for the network, even when ‘h’ values differ.

We now extend the concept of countercurrence and ‘verticality’ to the composite curves. A vertical matching pattern between the hot and the cold composite curves will minimise the surface area requirement for the network. An enthalpy interval is created every time there is a change in stream population: i.e. at every stream supply and target temperature. Vertical heat transfer implies that heat transfer across enthalpy intervals is not allowed. Every hot stream in an interval must therefore be matched with a cold stream in that same interval.
The figures show the impact of Tmin on the capital and energy costs of a network. A small Tmin implies that the curves are close together, resulting in low utility requirements but large heat transfer area requirements. Based on the cost of utilities and heat transfer area, we have to find the optimum compromise between utility savings and capital investment. This optimum Tmin value is identified by the minimum on the total-cost curve. The optimum value of Tmin therefore depends on economical factors. Note: the enthalpy axis is not an absolute scale, so we are free to move the composite curves horizontally.

We can consider the enthalpy balance for the regions above and below the Pinch separately. Below the Pinch, the heat required by the cold streams is completely provided by the hot streams. The remaining heat from the hot streams is removed using cold utility. This shows that the process is a net heat ‘Source’ below the Pinch; it requires no hot utility. Similarly, the process above the Pinch is a net heat ‘Sink’ and requires no cold utility. For the minimum energy condition, the net heat ‘sink’ is balanced by the minimum hot utility requirement (QHmin), while the net heat ‘source’ is balanced with the minimum cold utility requirement (QCmin). There must be no heat flow across the Pinch.

It is possible to use the Composite Curves for selection and placement of multiple utilities. However, the exercise becomes difficult because we need to ‘cut up’ the composite curves in order to place any intermediate utility. This can be messy, particularly when several intermediate utilities are available. For selection and placement of utilities it is more convenient to use the Grand Composite Curve (GCC). The ‘Grand Composite Curve’ (GCC) is a plot of the residual or net heating/cooling requirement at any process temperature. To show this, the horizontal distance between the hot and cold composite curves is plotted against the interval temperature. The net heat requirement, as represented by the GCC, therefore already accounts for maximum process heat recovery at every temperature level. It is important to note that this process heat recovery is considered at Tmin temperature difference throughout. The GCC, so far, only includes information from the process stream data. It is more specifically called the ‘Process Grand Composite Curve’.

Comment for Graph 1: The GCC is a convenient tool for selection and placement of multiple utilities. Using the GCC, we can set heat load targets for utilities such as HP steam and refrigeration (Ref.), as shown on the left. In addition, the GCC indicates the maximum LP and MP steam duties that can replace the HP steam consumption and the maximum cooling water (CW) duty that can replace refrigeration. The shape of the GCC further suggests appropriate utility levels (e.g. steam temperatures) for a process. Comment for Graph 2: The shape of the Process Grand Composite Curve can often hint at a good selection of utilities. Large flat sections (plateaux) suggest the use of ‘constant temperature’ utilities, such as steam levels, steam turbine exhaust, cooling water, or refrigeration levels. Extensive sloping segments often indicate that gas turbine exhausts, hot-oil loops or boiler feedwater preheating may be more appropriate. Where a low-enough steam level is not available near a plateau, the utility GCC profile can be brought closer to the process GCC profile by letting higher pressure steam down through a turbine. By matching the shape of the Utility GCC to the Process GCC, we reduce the loss of driving forces, i.e. we minimise exergy loss.

Presentation Notes
When we concentrate only on the streams that need heating and cooling and leave out all the unit operations except heat exchangers and utility heaters and coolers, the process can be represented on a “Grid Diagram”. The hot streams are shown running from left to right in the top part of the diagram, whilst the cold streams are shown running from right to left in the bottom part of the diagram. Heat exchangers between process streams are shown by two circles on the corresponding streams, joined by a line. Heaters and coolers are shown as a single circle with the letter H or C respectively. The heat load can be shown below each exchanger. In the grid diagram, it is easy to show the Pinch. Here, we represent it by a double dashed line, separating the “above-” and “below-the-Pinch” regions. The above-Pinch region is shown on the left, whilst the below-Pinch region is shown on the right. Any violation of the basic Pinch design rules can be easily identified from the grid diagram.
