IN THIS ISSUE:

Being that this is my first president’s mes-sage in my new role with the Construction Association of Rural Manitoba, I would first like to thank and congratulate Ken Hardy for his successful 2 year term as President of CARM. I would also like to thank outgo-ing board members Jason Thorpe, Darren McCallum, Chris Griffin and Lori Mauthe for their time and efforts over the past few years. These people well represented this organiza-tion and their contributions are appreciated.

The Construction Association of Rural Man-itoba provides representation, information, education, and services to promote the sustainability and integrity of the rural construction industry. CARM is the voice of the construction industry in South West Manitoba, representing its members to consumers of construction services, governments, and the community at large. This mission statement was discussed during a strategic planning session held in December of 2013 with the involvement of the CARM executive, board members and facilitated by Kathryn Graham of MNP LLP. This planning session was successful in the fact that it allowed our executive and board to identify the direc-tion we see CARM moving towards over the next year and following years. I would like to provide you a summary of the vision for the next 5 years.

President’s Message:Representation, through its members, of 75%-85% of the construction workforce in South West Manitoba is something we will strive to achieve. To accomplish this, we will need to educate the construction companies that are not presently part of our membership as to the services CARM can provide such as exclusive group insurance & benefit programs, training opportunities, plan room use, career posting opportunities and more.

Have real, visible influence with all levels of government on behalf of the industry. Our Government Affairs Committee presently has some very capable people in place leading it in the right direction. This committee has just recently had some involvement in bringing forth some concerns raised by our members in regards to the practices and procedures of the Manitoba Workers Compensation Board. The feedback the committee received from WCB in regards to these concerns raised has not only been positive, but we have also been reassured our voice will be heard at a high level of the organization.

Have strong partnerships with other con-struction associations, including Canadian Construction Association (CCA), Manito-ba Home Builders Association (MHBA) and Winnipeg Construction Association (WCA) that extend CARM’s influence and provide

additional benefits to members. Presently we are having discussions with CCA in an effort to identify the benefits CARM and it’s members would gain from becoming a member of their organization. A presentation to the executive and board of CARM by CCA executives is being planned for the early part of April 2014.

Have an active, relevant and respected education program for both business and technical knowledge. For the 2014 year it is CARM’s plan to continue providing education programs for our membership.

Greetings fellow CARM members!

As my two year term as President of CARM comes to a close this month, I look back on the obstacles we faced, and the goals we have accomplished. I do feel honored to have had this experience, it was both challenging, and rewarding. I started my term with a freshly hired general manager, and soon after a new staff. Along with many new faces on our board.

Among other changes, the board re-wrote our by-laws this year. We, through our Community Services, Promotion & Communication committee, had the pleasure of donating to both the Ashley Neufeld Softball Complex

and the Brandon Optimist Soccer Park, honoring all our members by giving back to our community.

As president, I had the responsibility on behalf of CARM to address the Brandon City Council to successfully oppose bill 7. I also had the pleasure of being president during our 100th year celebrations, capped off with a very successful annual dinner evening.Our building committee had a busy, yet rewarding year, organizing our office and board room renovations.

Our Government Affairs committee developed, with the city of Brandon officials, the Development Task force committee, to assist both the city and our developers to move this city forward.

May I take this opportunity to thank our board of directors for giving their time so generously to grow and improve our organization. And thank you to everyone who volunteered their time to sit on our committees. Thank You.

I will serve another two years as Past President, while welcoming in our new President, Chris Johnston. Congratulations Chris, I know you are going to do a great job furthering our objectives through your term.

Anywhere from 4 to 6 courses will be provided with priority to topics such as Navigating Contracts and Documents and Risk Management. Many companies recognize that an investment in training is a positive motivator and excellent retention tool.

Provide an active, respected forum that supports business relationships across the industry. Our entertainment committee annually organizes a curling bonspiel, golf tournament and banquet. These events are a great opportunity for our members to collaborate with other trades, businesses and government representatives in our area to discuss the positives and negatives of our industry and the impacts they have. Events

such as these also create a networking opportunity to expand your business contacts and develop new relationships.

With the combined support of CARM’s executive, board members and staff, this newly defined direction will ensure our present members and future members see value in the services and benefits we can provide, which will in turn strengthen our organization.

General ManagerReport:Promoting Careers in Construction

BuildForce Canada recently released the 2014 version of its Construction Looking Forward Report. This report is a forecast of the labour mar-ket’s requirements for the next 10 years

in each trade. The Manitoba report shows slowdown in the industry for 2014 and 2015, which should allow employers to catch up and focus some of their efforts on training their existing workforce. CARM continues to promote careers in construction trades through our involve-ment with the Manitoba Construction Sector Council, Brandon Chamber of Commerce, Workforce Development Committee and activity in career fairs.

Through our position on the Board of Directors of the Manitoba Construction Sec-tor Council (MCSC), construction trades ca-reers are promoted at various career fairs, symposiums, and school presentations throughout the province. The Trade Up Manitoba website, which is aimed at attracting youth to construction trades careers, has recently been redeveloped and includes information about the various construction trades careers includ-ing a description of the type of work, how much money the trade makes and where to get started. Check out the new website at www.tradeupmanitoba.com. Also in an effort to connect with youth, a Facebook page called Trade Up Manitoba has been created. The posts here are short bits of information intended to attract the attention of youth and engage them in a conversation about trades careers.

The Brandon Chamber of Commerce has started a committee on workforce devel-opment intended to bring together major employers in the area to discuss potential solutions for the skilled labour shortage. CARM has a representative on this committee to bring the construction industry perspective to the table. A planning session to determine a plan of action for the year will happen in the next few weeks.

CARM participated in the Brandon Career Symposium March 3-5, 2014 where we shared

a booth with Apprenticeship Manitoba and the Manitoba Construction Sector Council. We were pleased to receive donations from Rona, the Construction Safety Association of Manitoba and Safety Chicks to be able to draw the students to our booth with a nail driving competition. The first one to hammer two nails into a board won a prize. This gave us a great way to bring the students into our booth area so we could begin a conversation with them about construction trades careers.

As our industry continues to see labour shortages, CARM will continue to promote construction trades careers in various ways for our members.

BuildForce Canada has recently released the 2014 version of Construction and Maintenance Looking Forward which forecasts whether the labour market needs will be met for various trades in the province.

Brandon Career Symposium 2014 - Keystone Centre

On February 27th, newly elected CARM president Chris Johnston proudly accepted a certificate of recognition from Assiniboine Community College Foundation Past President Dennis Hunt for CARM’s continued support of ACC and it’s students. CARM reached a higher level of support this year and was moved into the President’s Circle group of donors.

Workforce solutions built by industry

The 2014 CARM Mixed Funspiel came down to Rob Greenwood, curling for Centec Electric and Brent Skinner, curling for C&R Sheetmetal, heading out on the ice to throw skips rock for the win. After a couple of draws, Rob was able to beat out his opponent to win the bonspiel for Centec Electric. Congratulations to Rob Greenwood, John Dannis, Ryan Clark and Kristen Nickel for your first place finish to win a $100 Blu Kitchen & Bar gift certificate for each player.

In traditional CARM fashion, we had over 40 people toss a real frozen turkey down the ice in the annual CARM Turkey Shoot. Winners of this year were Rob Margettes of Westoba Credit Union for the men and Heather Osterbeck of Cumming & Dobbie 3 for the women. They each took home $50 and their turkey! $105 was added to the CARM Community Projects fund from the remainder of the proceeds from the turkey shoot.

Two attendance prizes of $100 gift certificates for Obermaiers Sausage & Meats, sponsored by Livingstone Landscaping were won by Remi Decosse of Horizon Builders and Mike Jones of CSAM.

Raffle ticket sales added $272 to the CARM Community Projects fund. Adam Nychuk of CSAM was the winner of raffle draw #1 of an Asus Memo Pad tablet courtesy of Juggernaut Computers and Mary Hardy of Hardy Electric won raffle draw #2 of an autographed Brandon Wheat Kings hockey stick and a $25 Tim Horton’s gift card courtesy of BDR Services.
