WHAT IS MODERN SLAVERY?Human traff icking is an international crime and one ofthe many faces of modern slavery. Victims are oftenlured by false promises of a lucrative job, education or arelationship. Other forms of modern slavery includeforced labour, debt bondage and child marriage. The problem is huge: more than 40 mil l ion peopleworldwide are estimated to be victims of modern slavery.Conditions such as poverty and confl ict , combined withthe mobil ity of modern working practices, presentopportunities for exploitation. It ’s also a highly profitablei l legal industry worth about US$150 bil l ion each year, making it the second largest criminal activity in theworld. WHICH COUNTRIES AREAFFECTED? Human traff icking affects every country, either as pointsof origin, transit or destination, or a combination of al lthree. Traff icking most heavily impacts less developedcountries where communities are often more vulnerablebecause of confl ict , poverty and lack of access toeducation.   The problem is worst in our own region - 62% of peopleliving in slavery are in Asia and the Pacif ic . Cambodia, where Run for Freedom takes place, ranksnumber four in the Asia Pacif ic region on the GlobalSlavery index.     Further reading -   https://www.globalslaveryindex.org

We know that the idea of asking for money can be daunting. Here are somepractical t ips to help you reach - and hopefully surpass - your fundraising goal!

Our aim this year is for each participant to raise at least $1 ,500. I f you break thatdown, that might be 30 family members or fr iends donating $50 each. That's prettyachievable, r ight?   However, we encourage you to go al l out in your fundraising! Themore funds we raise, the more we can support survivors of traff icking, slavery andabuse to heal and rebuild their l ives.     Last year, two of our participants raised more than $13,000 each! We'd love to seethat target smashed this year. Maybe you could be the one to set a new fundraisingrecord for Run for Freedom? Anything is possible!
