“Shooting Star Inn” Huntsville

Beehive A’s - The Model A Ford Club of Northern Utah

President’s Message: I promised myself I wouldn't talkabout the weather in this column. I can'tresist complaining. I'm not pleasedwith our change of weather. Any ofyou that can influence the weather letsjust have a summer redo please. OurSeptember meeting was great. Wewrangled Basil into leading us on a tourto Huntsville and the Shooting Starincluding a bug splat contest. My Prez Cliff B. conducting some serious business at Sept. meeting ongoing thanks to all our club members. Rich for the Newsletter and group emails and etc. Jim Brown for hisaccounting skills and various assists. Doug for spearheading the fair, Crystal Hot Springs and a "Night at theSpeak Easy." Thanks to Jim Torghele for being my right hand man, several gifts and the family plan chipped toothrepair. The list goes on and on. Our whole club works as a team and that's why it works as well as it does. Be safeand keep em' rolling. Cliff ...aka Da Prez.

Out and About Thanks to club member Brownie Petersen, and his keep his feet dry boots from the morningdew, for volunteering a 5:30 a.m. arrival time to assist the Bonneville Car Club of Brigham Cityto set up the city’s park for the Peach Days Car Show. Dan Johnson received an “A” in his shopfor repair whose engine had seized up after being stored for several years with ethanol gas in itsgas tank. 2proceeded to stage in the city park for the show. Ten club member Model A’s participated in theevent. These A’s were represented by the Combie’s, Wheelwright’s, Baker’s, Leishman’s,Jenkin’s, Clausse’s, Friedlie’s, Session’s, Kotter, and C. Carles of Logan. Others membersshowed up to do the walk-about: the Painter’s, Jacobsen’s, and “the Don” Niederhauser. Shadecanopies were set up where we settled in to socialize and wander about to take in the sights, sounds, and activities. Burger’s were had for lunch and fresh from the tree peach pie made adelightful desert. The weather was a bit warm but all in all a perfect day for the Peach Dayscelebration.

International Model A Day celebrated The front door parking lot to the Greenery Restaurant at Rainbow Gardens became the stagingarea for our International Model A Day tour up Ogden Canyon, across Pineview Dam, onto Edenand Huntsville. Basil and Shirley Combe were our tour leaders. Once we arrived at the ShootingStar bar and grill, it was determined that Prez Cliff Betten was the bug splatter contest winner. Basil, as promised, paid the winner Cliff for the cost of his meal. Eleven members drove theirA’s. The world famous “Shooting Star” burger was had by all. Basil timed the threateningweather perfectly for this beautiful autumn day run. As we broke up to go our separate ways, some headed up over Trapper’s Loop and onto Clearfield to a therapy animals fund-raiser carshow.

Technical Q & A Dennis Thompson attended the MAFCAconvention in Puyallup, Wa. where he took thispicture of a souped up “A.” Do ask D.T. at theOctober meeting: who, what, why, when, whereand how of this engine modification and about the“A” with the duel Mitchell speed splitterinstallation. Only he knows.

Peach Days vehicle highlighted in newspaper I have seen this truck. I know this truck. Iknow where it is located. I know the owner. Iknow where he keeps it. It had better be in hisgarage right now. Tim Gurrister, a reporter atthe Standard Examiner recognizes neat “Iconiccars” when he sees one. Of the nine-hundredand seventy cars registered at the Peach Dayscar show, one vehicle stood out to him that hephotographed and had it printed in the paper(S/E Friday Sept. 12. 1C). They published apicture of my pickup truck. To say the least,I’m flattered. Tata. Rich K.

A head gasket/head recommendation Ray Wheelwright gave the tech talk on head gasket problems at last month’s meeting. Amongthe several available makes of gaskets he recommended the silver colored composition gasket B-6051-C available at Bert’s as the best replacement. Randy Christiansen passed along some information he gleaned, cut and pasted, from theAghooga.com web site: Question: New model A head gaskets come with a water hole in the middle but many heads donot have that hole drilled in the head. Is it O.K. to drill a hole or is it best just to leave it the way itis? Thanks, Steve. Answer: Mr. Larry Brumefield of Brumfield Heads: I wouldn't fool with it. Notice the largeodd-ball shaped hole on the far left side or driver's side of the head. Nobody worries about it.

6Notice that the gasket is solid and covers the hole which I call the "canoe hole" because of itsshape. I've seen variations in the water transfer holes on blocks and heads, both, but I don't recallseeing a block where that hole was used. That hole and the oblong hole to which you refer had more to do with stabilizing andsupporting the water jacket core in the mold when the head was cast than any intentions for watertransfer. That core had better not move when the iron is poured. I should know. Yup, and notice if ahead gets overheated they will often crack from that hole over to the stud hole or over to the waterhole that are in line with it on either end. The area is stronger when it is solid with no hole.

...and at the end of a “Peachy Day” While preparing to leave the Peach Days car show, a large slovenly dressed burley guyapproached me and said, “When are you going to put this in the demolition derby.” I thought tomyself, “Be positive now–change the subject.” I replied, “When this truck wears out, I am goingto buy me one of those new Ford 350's with duelies.” He appeared not to leave. So I said, “Youhave insulted me, you are rude, please leave.” The jerk had no class.

PS/Quote: I, the not so Rich Kotter guy a teacher at NOJH, while shopping at Macy’s Groceryin N. Ogden, was in conversation with some students who were snitching and mouth poppinggrapes. We were approached by the store manager, the one and only Randal Christiansen andheard him exclaim: “Quit stealing my damn grapes, you know where to pay for them.”
