• Purchaseseveralyardsofanimalprintfabrictouseastablecloths. UsethepicturebookRumbleintheJungle as the centerpiece.

• Ropeoffanareainyouryardorlivingroomforthe“JunglePettingZoo.” Addahomemadesign.

• Decorateyourdrivewaywithananimal“pawprint”trailleadingtoyourfrontdoor. Cutpawprintsoutofcardboardandtapethemtoyourdriveway,ordrawthemwithchalk.

• Junglemural:Whileyouwaitforeveryonetoarrive,keepearlyguestsbusywithajungle mural.Spreadalargerollofwhiteorbrownpaper(availableatcraftstores)onafloor, driveway,ortabletop.Leaveasupplyofmarkers,crayons,and/orcoloredpencilsinthe area.Youcanhelpgetthecreativityflowingbyprintingandgluingsomeoftheillustrations frompagesixrandomlyonthepaper.

Party ActivitiesOnceeveryonehasarrived,gettheminthemoodtopartybyreading“There’saRumbleintheJungle,”thefirstpoemofthebook.Thenchooseanyorallofthepartyactivitiesbelow!

1. Chimpanzee–ReadtheChimpanzeepoemandthenplayMonkey in the Middle: Have the kidsformabigcirclewithonechildstandinginthemiddle.Theobjectofthegameisfor thekidstotossaball(abeachballworksgreat)aroundthecirclewithoutlettingthemonkey (inthemiddle)interceptit.Ifthemonkeycatchestheball,thenthepersonwhothrewit becomesthenextmonkey.

2. Best Chimpanzee Contest:Encouragethekidstomakenoisesandactlikemonkeys. Enlistotheradultstojudgethecompetition.Awardprizesforthefunniest,loudest,silliest, mostrealistic,andsqueakiestnoises,soeveryonegetsaprize.

ReadtheLionpoemandthenplayCatch the Lion by the Tail:Thisisavariationoftheclassic “Duck,Duck,Goose”game.Havethekidssitinacircleonthefloor.Oneplayer(theLion)has a“tail”(ayellowpieceoffabricwithaknotononeend)tuckedintohiswaistbandorbackpocket. TheLiongoesaroundthecircletaggingeachplayerlightlyonthebackwhilesaying“Lion.” TheLionshouldthentagsomeonerandomlyandshout“Hyena!”TheLionmustrunaround thecircleandtrytotakeHyena’sspotbeforebeingcaught.IfHyenasnatchesLion’stail,then HyenabecomestheLion,andifnottheLioncontinuesrulingthejungle.

4. Elephant–ReadtheElephantpoemandthengoonThe Great Peanut Hunt:Beforetheparty, hideonebagofcandycircuspeanutsinyourhouseoryard.Attheparty,getthekidsto transformintoelephantsandhavethemlookforthecandybag.Onceit’sfound,theguests can share the candy.

5. Giraffe–AfterreadingtheGiraffepoem,letthechildrenEat Like a Giraffe!Usingstring,hang doughnuts(masqueradingasleaves)fromthelimbsofatree,yourswingset,oraropehung insideyourhouse.Hangthematanappropriateheightsokidscanreachthemwiththeir mouths.Tellkidstokeeptheirhandsbehindtheirbacksandeatthehanging“leaves”from thetrees–justlikeagiraffe!

6. What Animal Am I?:Printtheillustrationsonpagesix.Cutouteachpictureandgluethem ontoindexcards.Haveeachchildpickacard.Takingturnstheyshouldthentrytoactoutthe animalontheircard(notalking,butanimalsoundsencouraged!)andhaveeveryoneelse guesswhatanimaltheyare.

7. Snake, Crocodile, Gazelle:ReadtheSnake,Crocodile,andGazellepoemsandthenplay thisfunversionof“RedLight,GreenLight.”Havethechildrenlineupinalargearea(yardor playroom).Standagooddistanceawayfromthem.Whenyoucall“SnakesGo!”they mustslitheronthegroundtowardyou.Whenyoucall“SnakesStop!”theymuststop wherevertheyare.Whenyoucall“CrocodilesGo!”theycontinuewalkingtowardyou whileusingtheirarmstoopenandsnapshuttheir“mouths.”Whenyoucall “CrocodilesStop!”theystop.Whenyoucall“GazellesGo!”theycanruntoward youuntilyousay“GazellesStop!”Alternatebetweentheanimalsuntilthekidshave allreachedthefinishline.Youcanvarythisgameusinganyanimalsyouwant.
