    MALAYSIA CHEM-E CAR COMPETITION 2015

    RULES AND REGULATION1. GENERAL

    1.1. Eligibility

The competition is open to all undergraduate students in Malaysia and overseas. This includes students

who are pursuing diploma and/or bachelor degree in any discipline. However, at least TW !"# team

members must be $hemical %ngineering students.

    1.2 Obj!ti"

To design and construct a shoebox&si'ed car that is powered by a chemical energy source. This $hem&%

car will carry a certain load o( water to a given distance, hit a ball and stop. The car per(ormance will be

)udged based on the combination o( completion o( prede(ined tas*s, design creativity and issues relatedto sa(ety, environment and health.

    1.# St$t%&t '( Ag)%&t

All team members must sign a statement explicitly indicating they have understood and will abide by

this +ules and +egulation. This statement must be submitted to the rgani'ing $ommittee be(ore the

    event.

    1.* T$% C'%+',iti'&

The maximum number o( team members is -+ !#. Multi&disciplinary teams (rom the same institution

are encouraged. %ach team must consist o( at least TW !"# $hemical %ngineering students unless a

special waiver is obtained. o 0nter&1arsity team is allowed.

    1.5 C'%+l$i&tP)'t,t

An o((icial complaint pre(erably with evidence such as a digital photo must be (iled by the Team Advisor

    to the Appeal $ommittee with a deposit o( +M 233 within % !2# hour o( the incident. 4hould the

complaint is re)ected by the Appeal $ommittee, the deposit will be (or(eited. All decisions by the Appeal

$ommittee are (inal and hence cannot be contested a(ter the winners have been announced during the

2.1.1 Sizes of Poster and Board

%ach team must display an A2&si'ed poster on the designated board !2 m x 2 m# that displays the team

name. The poster must be placed prior to the pening $eremony.

    2.1.2 Contents of Poster

The poster should be sel(&explanatory in describing how the car is powered and/or stopped by the

chemical reaction, the uni5ue (eatures o( the car, and economic, environmental and sa(ety aspects o(

the design. o presentation is re5uired. There is also no 5uestion and answer session. 0( necessary, an

    2.2.5 The Challenges

%ach team will be given TW !"# opportunities or rounds to traverse the car to a speci(ied distance

!9inish Cine:# and hit a gol( ball towards goal posts while carrying a certain load o( water. The re5uired

load o( water and distance o( the inish Cine, which will vary in each round, will be announced prior tothe start o( the competition. The gol( ball will be placed at the vertical center !at hal( o( the trac* width

or about 2. m (rom the top or bottom borders# but its hori'ontal position will be 2 m be(ore the inish

    Cine, which will be drawn between and 23 m G 3.33 m !9range o( inish Cine:# (rom the 4tarting Cine.

A 4topping Cine will be placed @ m a(ter the inish Cine to allow ample distance (or the car to come to a

complete stop be(ore it hits the obstacle and/or moving pass the obstacle towards the goal posts. 0( the

car (ails to stop, one o( the team members must halt and remove the car (rom the trac*.

The load will be between 3 and 33 mC o( water. A )udge or a helper will measure the prescribed water

(or each team be(ore and a(ter each run. Teams may not add or remove any load !or other inert items#

to ad)ust their vehicle weight during the runs. However, teams are allowed to ad)ust (uel or reactants

used in the carIs chemical reaction.

The car will start with its (ront end )ust touching the designated 4tarting Cine or anywhere within the

launching pad. The aims o( the competition are to have the car stops closest to the speci(ied inish Cine,

scores a 9goal: and stays within bounds o( each trac*. The inish Cine will be determined by the

    organi'er as stated above. An obstacle !a hal(&cylindrical shaped ob)ect, e.g., "&inch diameter >1$ pipe

or toilet paper roll, with length J 2 m and radius J ". cm# will be placed as shown in 0

An out&o(&bound car is de(ined as having any part o( the car exceed the 4topping Cine and/or (alls

outside the side tape boundaries o( the trac*. The out&o(&bound car will be treated as dis5uali(ied (orthat run. ote that even i( the car returns within bound a(ter exceeding the trac* boundaries, the car is

still considered going out&o(&bound. o measurement and goal mar* will be ta*en in this case.

    2.2. Seuence of the Teams

The se5uence !order# o( the teams will be selected by random drawing. 0n the (irst round, a )udge will

    #.1 R%'t C'&t)'l ') M!$&i!$l St$)ti&g

The car must be an autonomous vehicle and cannot be controlled remotely. >ushing to start the vehicle

or installing a mechanical starting device is not allowed.

    #.2 S&,') $& Ot) Alig&%&t D"i!,St)$tgi,

Any type o( sensor!s# and/or device!s# as well as a strategy o( ad)usting the side walls (or car alignment isallowed be(ore the car moves. This includes the use o( mirror, laser pointer and/or laser distance meter.

However, the sensor!s# and/or devices!s# must be turned o(( and/or removed (rom the trac* be(ore the

car starts to move. 4imilarly, the side walls must remain static and on the side tape boundaries o( the

    trac* be(ore the car moves.

    #.2 C'%%)!i$l 4$tt)i,

o commercial batteries !e.g., AA batteries, (uel cells and lead&acid batteries# are allowed as the power

source. However, they are allowed to power up instrumentation !e.g., detectors, sensors# and/or

devices !e.g., (lash/C%7 lights# used in the electrical circuit. The )udges reserve the right to disallow the

use o( commercial batteries i( they have any doubt.

    #.# St'++i&g M!$&i,%

o mechanical (orce can be applied to the wheel or ground to slow or stop the car !e.g. no bra*es#.

However, stopping mechanism that is based on chemical engineering principles is allowed !e.g. color

changes during neutrali'ation#. There can be no mechanical or electronic timing device!s# to stop the

chemical reaction or stop the car. or example, a stop switch consisting o( a li5uid draining out o( a

vessel is considered a mechanical timing switch and will not be allowed.

    #.* Li6i L$7$g

The car must be designed to avoid li5uid discharge. Any li5uid on the vehicle must be contained and not

allowed to be discharged intentionally or unintentionally (rom the car. 1ehicles that discharge li5uids via

    any mechanism will be dis5uali(ied.

All containers on the vehicle containing chemicals must be securely attached to the vehicle to prevent

small holding tan* with a valve or a syringe be added to the car to add the chemical at the Caunching

    >ad or on the 4tarting Cine. The chemicals can be added either by using a syringe or by gravity (low

through the valve. All containers at the Caunching >ad with chemical must be properly labeled, with a lid
