Ruffled Wristlet Tutorial

Supplies:

1 D-ring, 1 ¼ inches wide

10 x 5 inch rectangle fabric, in this case a solid gray

9 x 5 rectangle fusible interfacing

2 strips 1 ½ inches wide and 22 inches long (this could be a honey bun strip cut in two pieces)

Matching thread

A walking foot and zipper foot

Instructions:

1.  Fuse the interfacing to the wrong side of the rectangle. It is ½ inch shorter in each end to avoid

some bulk in a later step.

2.  Iron the rectangle in half lengthwise, then fold the ends into the center crease and iron again.

3.  Pin and top stitch 1/8 inch from either edge.

4.  Place the ruffle strips right sides together, and join them with ¼ inch seams.

5.  Turn the strip right side out and iron flat, with the seams at the edges. Increase your stitch

length to the maximum on your machine and baste down the center of your strip.

6.  Pull on the top thread to create the gathers in your ruffle. Try to gather the strip evenly.

7.  Fold the raw edges into the ends about a ¼ inch and place it on top of the solid gray piece. Start

sewing it to the base about ½ inch from the end of the gray base. You’ll need a walking foot for

this step. Going slowly, sew the ruffle down the center with a regular stitch length. Turn the

ends inside the strip, like you did at the start, and finish the ruffle a ½ inch before the end of the

solid gray base.

8.  Here’s how it will look.

9.  Slip the D-ring into the strip, the curved part towards the ruffles. Place the two ends of the strip

together, ruffles facing eachother.

10.  Sew the two ends of the strip ¼ inch from the edge. Finish the raw edges with a zigzag.

11.  Turn the strip, now a circle, right side out.

12.  Slide the D-ring to the end near the seam. Switch to your zipper foot, and adjust your needle

position to the far right. This will allow you to topstitch as close to the ring as possible. I sew

over the seam a few times for strength.

13.  You’re done!
