2 THE BULLETIN

We can all agree that the winter months have taken hold, with their stiff winds, our first snow day, and freezing temperatures. Yet, each morning at

the 79th Street building, I am greeted by the smiling faces of excited parents and students, who consider arriving at school to be one of the high points of their day. The classrooms are warm and inviting, and each child is welcomed to his or her special place as a member of the community. Nursery through grade six is ready to greet the morning with verse.

While all this is happening on 79th Street, the upper school building on 78th Street has already gotten started with middle and high school students arriving with coffee and bagels in hand, their eyes just beginning to welcome the light rising up over the East River. No longer being dropped off at school by parents, guardians, and caregivers,  the students entering the 78th Street building are still warmly greeted by their advisors and teachers sharing questions and answers about homework, special projects, and news about college acceptances being shared in the common room.

The second half of the school year promises to be a joyous and prosperous one, and we’re off to a great start.

It’s my greatest hope that you will take a few minutes to sit down with a cup of tea and read this issue of The Bulletin. I especially enjoyed learning more about our sixth graders and their  October trip to the farm. What exuberance they showed as they navigated even the narrowest of rock slits. And, speaking of rocks, our own 8th grader Ashima Shiraishi shares  the story of her affinity for climbing even the steepest grades in Between a Rock and a Great Place. Finally, if you know parents who have a two-year old, please

share Joe Robertson’s charming article with them. I’m sure they’ll find our Parent-Child Program extraordinary.

As always, thank you for entrusting us with your children’s care, and thank you for partnering with us in their ongoing education. We are committed to each child’s social, emotional, and intellectual development, and we will continue to work with them as they bring into being what is the best in each of them.

2015: To A Very Good Yearby Dr. William D. Macatee / Administrative Director

“In the course of his development as a child, there comes the moment in the life of a man when for the first time he feels himself to be an independent being distinct from all the rest of the world.”

3 THE BULLETIN

When creating stories for two-year-olds or younger, I am always wondering what is needed for these children at this time.

What words and pictures will meet the mysterious imaginative forces, forces that will soon command their play? To what degree are the children imitative of the imposing images and stimuli from the endless media in our modern field of vision and daily life? How might I create and speak the most developmentally nourishing stories? No matter the complexity of the questions, the beneficial stories always render themselves into the simplest of heartfelt journeys.

I present here three basic story forms for the youngest children in a group setting. One is the no-words-spoken story. This is a full experience, using audible deep breaths to depict the puppet’s short journey. The Bear Sighting (next page) is an example. The bear is a loved animal that is on purpose lumbering into her world. I connect as fully as I can to the imagination of this bear foraging for food. She is working and resting, thoughtfully breathing, even sighing. I seek to have a rich, detailed inner picture of the moment I am sharing. My breath is the living moment of this animal with no separation between the bear, the children, and me. With intent it lives in our imaginations. The children are transported and soothed by this gentlest of stories and the quiet that allows for group stillness. Having no words spoken allows those children with delayed speech to experience a belonging they might not otherwise sense. And for children who are excessively verbal, this may give them a much-needed embodied pause.

4 THE BULLETIN

Another story form that supports the youngest child is a spoken moment. I might choose just a piece of the longer Good Night, Baby Bear Story (right). I will bring to life just the meal, getting sleepy and going to bed, or Mommy and Daddy out digging, or as little as the baby bear playing and rolling. Any segment can be portrayed with joy and a sense of completeness.

Eventually, I build our story time into what is more recognizable as a traditional offering with a beginning, middle, and end. I will use more and more verbal language and reverent interaction between the characters to portray this third story form. Good Night, Baby Bear in its entirety is an example. With the youngest children the “no-fail plot” is as follows: referencing the wide world; our characters are home; they go outside into the season; they interact/play/work; they return home; everyone is together; they share a warm meal; they sleep; all is well. It is a lovely, wholehearted tale that says, “life is good.”

Stories devoted to delighting the children and developing a strong imagination will serve them their entire life.

Bear Sighting(No Words Spoken)

Bear appears. Pauses. Looks about. Lumbers along. Breathes deeply, evenly. Digs. Lumbers along. Sighs. Digs. Eats. Breathes. Lumbers off.

Stories for our Parent-Child Program

[Continued from previous page] Good Night, Baby Bear Once upon a time, the great forest was still asleep under a blanket of snow. Atop the icy mountain, in their snug cave, lived three bears; Mommy bear, daddy bear and baby bear. One day, the mommy bear and the daddy bear ventured out to gather food. Daddy and Mommy lumbered away into the forest. They went up hills And down hills Their big, leathery paws slid on ice And overturned craggy rocks. They dug in the frozen earth

They dug and dug and dug. Both climbed up the tree To the tippy top, and both climbed down again. They had found plenty to eat. It was time to make their way home. Again they went up hills and down hills.

All the while in the cave, baby bear rolled and played, And wondered, “Where are my mommy and daddy?” Just then Mommy bear and Daddy bear arrived home. How happy they were to be together again.

It was time for dinner. They all ate together. They ate until their tummies were full.

Baby bear was sleepy. Mommy tucked baby bear in tight. A kiss goodnight and to bed.

Mommy bear was sleepy. Daddy bear was sleepy. A kiss goodnight and to bed. All were fed and warm and together.

The great forest was quiet and still.

6 THE BULLETIN

This past October, the sixth grade class made its fourth week-long trip to the Hawthorne Valley Farm, where the students enjoyed caring for farm animals such as cows,

pigs, and chickens; harvesting and cooking their own food; and learning tracking and agribusiness skills. In between the hard work, there was plenty of relaxation time spent both indoors and out, depending upon the weather and time of day.

To augment their studies of geology, the class spent an afternoon in the nearby Clarksville Cave, during which they crawled through narrow spaces and negotiated through waist-deep water and rock-strewn pathways. Our knowledgeable leader and guide, Steve Lewanick, helped us to prepare, experience, and process the entire journey. Not only was it physically challenging, it was also emotionally charged. Every participant, whether child or adult, had to confront and overcome fear or frustration at different times, and each one learned more about themselves and others in the process. [Before- and After-Caving photos (right)].

Here are some of the students’ thoughts on the day, in their own words:

Julia: “When we got to the cave parking lot, we had to get ready to go in the cave. At the farm, Steve had given us our gear. We had a helmet, a knee pad, a headlight, and rubber gloves. We hiked to the cave entrance, which was a small sinkhole. One by one, we climbed down the hole. The hole opened up to a giant room that is known as The Big Room. Once we were all in and sitting down, Steve told us to turn our lights out and experience total darkness. I couldn’t tell if my eyes were opened or closed!”

William: “I think being in total darkness is going to stay with me forever.”

Yeraz: “My greatest challenge was the army crawl because I was getting very frustrated when I began feeling enclosed. I thought to myself, ‘There is no way I can turn around; I have to finish.’ Even though I was getting smushed and uncomfortable, it was worth it in the end.”

Rocco: “My favorite part was the water fight because Steve started it even though he is 60 years old! That’s not something you see everyday!”

Maximilian: “In the cave, I learned (briefly) how it felt to be blind and how scary that is…I also learned that acidic water tastes disgusting.”

Lucia: The experience I had in the cave will help me not to be afraid to do anything in life, and to have fun.”

Niko: The caving trip really made me start thinking about other people. In the future, I will always keep one thought with me: that little things make a big difference to other people. I learned that I belong to a really nice, grateful and compassionate group of kids. I learned that I can stop being scared when I want to. I am very thankful to be in a class with such a nice teacher and students.”

I am very grateful to my supportive trip chaperones, Brian Kaplan and Katie Parker, and to the capable staff at Hawthorne Valley Farm, as well as the talented guides from Ascents of Adventure in Albany, and to my delightful class for such a memorable trip.

7 THE BULLETIN

I still remember the first day that I began to climb as if it was yesterday. It was in the heart of New York City’s Central Park in 2007. When I was six-years old, I would go

to a playground every day after school. One summer day, I noticed people climbing the rocks that were right next to the playground. There was a certain flow to it, which intrigued me and made me want to try it. After that day, I fell in love with the sport, and it replaced my daily routine of going to the playground.

A year later, I was able to win my first climbing competition in a local climbing gym. And during the same year, I went to the Youth Nationals and won in my category. After my victory, the spotlight was shone on me, and I received my first sponsorship. Rock climbing was no longer a hobby for me but a passion. The following year included traveling to different places in the country and competing at more competitions.

At age eight, I broke a record, which really shook things up and inspired me to keep on pushing myself forward. The following year I was able to break a new record, which was included in a famous climbing film. This film was played at many film festivals all over the world! Right before my 11th birthday, I was able to break a new world record, which was witnessed by a New York Times journalist who wrote a neat article about me. The following years, leading up to 2015, have been filled with many successes as well. I am currently working with a filmmaker on a documentary, which has been an amazing experience. My sponsors allow me to travel to

beautiful places all over the world and do what I love. My current sponsors include The North Face (clothing), Petzl (equipment), Evolv (shoes), Clif Bar (energy bars), and Sterling (loops).

I feel both grateful and honored to be living this lifestyle; however, there are also many challenges and sacrifices included. One of them is homework. I usually climb five or six days per week from 3:45-8:00 PM, and each night I get to my homework after 9:00. This means that I’m often still awake at 1:00 AM working on my homework. The lack of sleep affects my climbing and my schoolwork; however I cope with it. I also have to sacrifice hanging out with friends or going on trips. It’s rather painful to hear great memories from friends while being away. But, the joy and the rush of excitement that I feel when I’m on the rocks is something that I would never trade.

For eighth grader Ashima Shiraishi, climbing is in her blood. Ashima began climbing when she was just six years old. Her first climb? Red Rock in Central Park. Ashima, who climbs almost daily after school with rope and free solo, says she has fallen many times but, like most things, there’s the right way to fall—and the wrong way. “There’s an art to falling,” Ashima says, “and I know how to fall!” Most days, you’ll find Ashima climbing after school, and spending each and every vacation climbing the mountains of Europe, Japan, and South Africa. Two upcoming goals are to climb Yosemite and a range near Melbourne, Australia. And that’s not all: She wants to compete in a bouldering competition as part of the World Cup (she has to turn 16 first) and do more TEDx Teen Talks (she spoke at her first one in the fall at the O2 Theater in London). Still, Ashima remains humble about her ongoing journey – even when she is speaking with the New York Times. Read on as Ashima tells her story in her own words:

8 THE BULLETIN

The Rudolf Steiner School community shares with sadness the passing of Nancy and John Root, long-time members of the Steiner faculty. After 66 years

of marriage, they died within 13 days of each other.

John G. Root, April 20, 1925 - June 29, 2014Nancy M. Root, September 25, 1925 - July 12, 2014

John and Nancy were married on March 21, 1948 at the Rudolf Steiner School in NYC. Their three children, John Jr., Ann Elizabeth, and Christina Jamison, attended Steiner. John taught in the Humanities department at the Steiner High School for 26 years. His lovely singing voice and youthful personality are only two of the gifts he brought to his work. John’s favorite courses were Parzival, Ancient Philosophy, and Mechanical Drawing with Perspective. Nancy, the first Eurythmist trained in America, taught and performed Eurythmy for the Rudolf Steiner School. She was deeply involved in the founding of the Eurythmy Association of North America, as well as the Performing Arts Section in America. Both John and Nancy were immersed in the branch work of the NYC Anthroposophical Society. After they left Steiner, their ongoing devotion to Anthroposophy and the threefold social order led to the founding of the Community Supported Agriculture farm on Jug End Road, in what is now Berkshire Village in the Berkshires. They leave behind, in addition to their children, a generous family of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

John Jr., in his reminiscences, shared:

“Johnny and Nancy were pioneers, visionaries, of the social future.”

They touched, and inspired, a vast circle of students and friends. They are well remembered by many at the Rudolf Steiner School, and will be missed in the world of Anthroposophy.

If you are interested in the eulogies from John and Nancy’s funerals, please find them on John Jr’s website: justabundance.org.
