Induction to Rubber Expansion joints

Convoluted Technologies Pty Ltd stock and distribute a comprehensive range of rubber expansion joints for use in many tough, demanding industrial applications such as drinking water, chilled water, cooling water, condenser water applications, sewerage systems, fire systems, power generation, process plants, pulp and paper plants, HVAC heating and ventilating systems, sanitary installations, marine services, off-shore installations, flue gas cleaning systems and chemical/ petrochemical plants. We commonly stock standard spherical rubber expansion joints from 25 mm to 600 mm nominal Internal diameter and we can provide custom built rubber expansion joints from 25 mm to 3600 mm nominal internal diameter.

Where pressure/temperature/chemical compatibility and allowable movement conditions permit, rubber expansion joints provide a good solution for the absorption of piping misalignment and thermal movements.

Rubber expansion joints are an effective solution against the transfer of noise, vibration and water hammer in pipework, near pumps, compressors, valves, fans and similar pulsating equipment.

Due to the non-conductive nature of rubber, a rubber expansion joint could be installed to eliminate electrolyses problems in piping systems.

With the help of international partners we are able to supply the industry with rubber expansion joints with maritime and drinking water approvals.

Our rubber expansion joints are designed and built to the specification guidelines outlined in the Fluid Sealing Association Technical Handbook Non-Metallic Expansion Joints and Flexible Pipe Connections.

Standard Spherical DesignConvoluted Technologies Pty Ltd standard rubber expansion joints feature an engineered sphere design bellow which is inherently stronger than the hand fabricated shapes. Internal pressure within a sphere is exerted in all directions distributing forces evenly over a large area.

The spherical design “flowing arch” reduces turbulence, sediment build-up, thrust area and the effects of thrust on the piping system equipment when compared to the “high-arch” design.

Allowable movementsSpherical Rubber expansion joints are capable of axial compression/extension, lateral and angular movement.

Our standard rubber expansion joints are designed to absorb different individual movements non-concurrently within their published limits, whilst at the same time absorbing noise and vibration.

Available materialsThe rubber bellows (S10 / FSF; S10R / FSFA; S15R / FSFB; S20 / FTF; S30 / FTUA) are commonly constructed out of a rubber compound outer cover & inner tube with embedded nylon cord reinforcement and steel wire reinforcement collars.

Material Code Cover Elastomer Tube Elastomer Maximum operating

temp deg. CEE EPDM EPDM -50 up to 121

NP Neoprene Nitrile (Buna) -40 up to 99

NN Neoprene Neoprene -30 up to 107

HH Hypalon Hypalon -20 up to 121

BB Bromobuty Bromobuty -25 up to 121

Quick materials selection guideNote: Consult our Chemical resistance guide for more comprehensive information.

EPDM (Red label) is suitable for cold and warm water, including most chemicals for water treatment, industrial water, acids, alcohols, esters and ketones. EPDM is not suitable for oil-related media.

Nitrile / Buna (Yellow label) is suitable for hydrocarbon products, oils, fats and emulsions.

Neoprene (Blue label) is suitable for full exposure to the natural elements and has excellent flame retarding properties.

Moderate resistance to petroleum based fluids and chemicals.

Hypalon (Green label) is suitable for oxidizing chemicals.

Bromobutyl (Blank label) can resist some strong acid’s such as phosphoric acid and hydrochloric acid, it has the best resistance to natural elements, outstanding dampening properties and low permeability to air and gas.

Bromobutyl has poor resistance to petroleum based fluids.

Note: Consult our Chemical resistance guide for more comprehensive information.

Note: Temperatures listed above are the typical maximum degree ratings for continuous use. All fabrics lose a percentage of their strength in relation to exposure temperature and duration. That being said, higher operating temperatures may be achieved if operation pressures are reduced and sound engineering practices are used during the design and manufacture of a product.

Standard flangesThe most common flanges and backing rings installed on our rubber expansion joints are drilled to: AS 2129 Table D/E, ASME B16.1 – ANSI 150 lb and BS EN 1092 (BS4504) DIN 10-16 PCD and bolt hole dimensions.

Note: the flange thickness are all the same and are not in accordance with the relevant flange standards as they are designed to match the rubber joint configuration and pressure ratings.

Any other non-standard flange can be manufactured to suit your unique application.

Limit Rod Control Rod

Before installing a new or replacement rubber expansion joint you would need to make sure you consider the following information.

Nominal bore, over all length, movements, pressure rating, flange or connection details, chemical compatibility of the media and the operating environment, the use of Control rods and vacuum rings, piping anchoring, piping alignment, mating flange service, bolt length and bolt torque settings.

All of the above criteria are to be considered for a successful installation and maximum service life of the Rubber Expansion Joint.

Thrust CalculationWhen expansion joints are installed in the pipeline, the static portion of the thrust is calculated as a product of the area of the I.D. of the arch of the expansion joint times the maximum pressure that will occur within the line. The result is a force expressed in pounds.

Control rod assembliesThe Control Rod Assembly is a system of two or more threaded rods (also known as tie rods or limit rods) placed across an expansion joint from flange to flange to minimize possible damage to the expansion joint caused by excessive motion of the pipeline, pressure thrusts and limited pipeline anchoring.

Control rod assembliesThe control rod assemblies are set at the maximum allowable expansion and/or contraction of the joint and will absorb the static pressure thrust developed at the expansion joint. When used in this manner, they are an additional safety factor, minimizing possible failure of the expansion joint and possible damage to the equipment. Control units will adequately protect the joints, but the user should be sure that the pipe flange strength is sufficient to withstand total force that will be encountered.

A minimum of one set should be used in larger diameter rubber expansion joints, it is recommended to use multiple sets.

Anchored Systems: could operate without using control rods provided the piping movement and pressure rating is within our published data.

Unanchored Systems: always use control rods even if the pressure is lower than our pubilished data. Additional control rods can be used to compansate for pressure and piping load.

Spring / Flexible Mouted Equipment: alway’s use control rods even if the pressure is lower than our pubilished data. Additional controll rods can be used to compansate for pressure and piping load.

Vacuum ringsVacuum rings would need to be installed if the expected vacuum on the standard sphere rubber expansion joint exceeds 600 mm Hg absolute. It’s also a recommendation to install vacuum rings when the standard sphere rubber expansion joints are used in suction applications before a pump. To prevent the rubber expansion joints from collapsing.

The vacuum ring would need to be fitted before the flanges are installed.

The custom rubber expansion joints could sometimes come with a in-built vacuum ring.

Piping design guidance for Rubber expansion joints

Effective operation of a rubber expansion joint depends on proper installation of all of the components of a well-designed piping system, by a qualified piping engineer.Rubber expansion joints are not designed to take up excessive pressure thrusts or to absorb any piping load. Therefore pipe runs equipped with rubber expansion joints should be installed with proper designed anchoring points to eliminate the trust and piping load. Special care should be taken on the design of the mating flange service, bolt tension and the positioning of the installation bolts. If these facts are ignored, premature failure of rubber expansion joints will be imminent.

Anchoring guide linesFigure 1 below, illustrates a typical piping layout. You will notice that in all cases solid anchoring is provided wherever the pipeline changes direction and that the rubber expansion joint in that line are located as close as possible to the anchor points.

Rubber expansion joints seal on their rubber, they don’t require gaskets to seal on unless it is to pack potential uneven sealing surfaces.

Care should be taken in the selection of the mating flange service to avoid premature rubber expansion joint failure.

Care should be taken in the selection of the mating flange service to avoid premature rubber expansion joint failure.

Where possible design the connection with a flat face flange to avoid cutting into the sealing rubber.

In the first 3 examples, we show a Standard spherical rubber expansion joint.

Example 1, when using a floating flanges joint or welded pipe joint, you must ensure that the internal diameter of the sealing surface on the mating flange corresponds to the internal diameter of the rubber bellow.

If this is not the case and the internal diameter of the mating flange is larger than blank metal gasket and additional rubber seal must be used on installation. Avoid a rubber to rubber seal.

Example 2

Example 2, when mating of with rubberised vales or flanges we must use a blank gasket to avoid rubber to rubber seal.

Rubber Expansion Joint Installation Instructions

Typical Tools required installing a rubber expansion jointAppropriate Lifting gear; always lift on both flanges or with two slings each side of the sphere.

Centring Mandrels to help aligning the bolt holes, care should be taken not to damage the rubber.

Rubber hammer, do not use any sharp-edge tools.

Two correct size ring spanners and torque wrench.

Appropriate length bolts and washers.

Rulers and squares to check the piping alignment and installation gap.

Soapy water or green soap to lubricate the installation, if the operational conditions allow this.

(Note: rubber expansion joints seal on their rubber, they don’t require gaskets to seal on unless it is to pack potential uneven sealing surfaces - see our technical literature)

Take note of your surroundings for any other environmental hazards.

UV, heat, spark or chemical exposure.

No welding should be performed near the rubber expansion joint without appropriate protection of the rubber joint externally and from stray currents.

CAUTION Make sure the right rubber expansion joint selected for the application based on chemical compatibility, temperature rating, allowable movements, flange materials and are there control rods required consult our rubber expansion joint catalogue for all this information.

Visual inspection of the CT-REJ flanges and mating surfaces.Prior to installing the rubber joint ,visually check the condition of the rubber joint. Make sure the piping is aligned within 3 mm and the installation gap is within the allowable measurement without using excessive force. Review anchors support. Remove all foreign materials and debris. Examine the connecting pipe flanges according to the published requirements.

When control rods are required Install the gusset plates on the outside of the mating flange. Insert the threaded rods trough the outside hole in the plates. Pay attention if you need limit nuts.Don’t set the limit nuts in their final dimensions until the joint is fully installed, the control rod could be used to compress or extend the joint within its installation limits.

Bolts directions and torque settingsTo prevent damage to the rubber membrane, it’s important to take care on the installation direction of the bolts.Where possible, we would always recommend the bolt head without a washer on the inside of the rubber expansion joint flange. If this is impossible to do, you need to make sure the bolts are to a length so that they do not protrude more than 3mm beyond the nut. Any packing washers should be placed on the pipe side.Protruding bolts are a common cause of joint failure.

Torque Settings by Joint Design

Standard spherical rubber expansion joints

Custom rubber expansion joints

Torque settings by joint designTighten the bolts in two to three successive steps with a cross- bolt tightening pattern to the torque setting below to assure leak free operation. The bolted connections should always be made using two wrenches. Bolts should be done up so there is a close as possible equal gap between the mating flanges at all times.(Never tighten to the point of metal to metal contact between the rubber joint flange and the mating flanges, overtightening will cause deformation of the rubber expansion joint sealing bead and premature failure.)All rubber materials tend to relax over time. It is good practice to check the installation about two weeks after installation.Always install a rubber expansion joint in an accessible spot for inspection and ease of inspection and maintenance.

22 | Rubber Expansion Joints

Field inspection guide of installed rubber expansion joints

After being fittedAfter installation, the rubber expansion joint should be properly protected against damage. Nothing should be in contact of with rubber.

The rubber parts must not be painted or exposed to solvents or chemicals. The best performance is obtained when the expansion joint is able to function stress-free under normal operating conditions.

Pressure testing of rubber expansion joints.A rubber expansion joint relies on its rubber sealing face pressure testing before supply can adversely influence the integrity of the sealing face.

Random batch pressure testing of the rubber expansion joint is performed by the manufacturer.

Pressure testing to 1.5 times the working pressure can be performed by Convoluted Technologies on special request by the customer, only if the customer takes note of the information stated above. Convoluted Technologies Pty Ltd will be recording our recommendations on the provided test certificates.

System pressure test should take place only after the rubber expansion joints have been fully installed in the piping system. If leaks should occur in the flange connection, the bolts can be retightened not exceeding the torque recommendations .

All rubber material tends to relax over a period of time. It is good practice to check the tightness of the bolts for 80% of the installation torque, about two weeks after the installation date.

If temperature cycling is part of the installation, it is recommended to check the above on an ongoing monthly basis, until such time that the last check shows no further tightening is required.

Field inspection guide of installed rubber expansion joints The following guide is intended to assist in determining if an expansion joint should be replaced or repaired after extended service.

Replacement Criteria: If an expansion joint is in a critical service condition and is five or more years old, consideration should be given to maintaining a spare or replacing the unit at a scheduled outage. If the service is not of a critical nature, observe the expansion joint on a regular basis and plan to replace after 10 years’ service. Applications vary and life can be as long as 30 years in some cases.

Cracking; Cracking or crazing may not be serious if only the outer cover is effected and the inner fabric is not exposed. If necessary, repair on site with rubber cement if the cracks are minor. Cracking where the fabric is exposed and torn, indicates the expansion joint should be replaced. Such cracking is usually the result of excess extension, angular or lateral movements. Such cracking can be identified by; flattening of the sphere, cracks at the base of the sphere, and/or cracks at the base of the flange. To avoid future problems, replacement expansion joints should be ordered with limit or control rods.

Blisters/Deformation and Ply Separation; Some blisters or deformations, when on the external portions of an expansion joint, may not affect the proper performance of the expansion joint. These blisters or deformations are cosmetic in nature and do not require repair. If major blisters, deformations and/or ply separations exist in the tube, the expansion joint should be replaced as soon as possible. Ply separation at the flange outside diameter can sometimes occur and is not a cause for replacement of the expansion joint.

Page 23: Rubber Expansion Joints - convoluted.com.au

23 | Rubber Expansion Joints

Field inspection guide of installed rubber expansion joints

Metal Reinforcement; If the metal reinforcement of an expansion joint is visible through the cover, the expansion joint should be replaced as soon as possible. Additionally, if any external metal reinforcement is exhibiting signs of fatigue or wear, the expansion joint should be replaced as soon as possible.

Dimensions; Any inspections should verify that the installation is correct; that there is no excessive misalignment between the flanges; and, that the installed face-to- face dimension is correct. Check for over-elongation, over-compression, lateral or angular misalignment. If incorrect installation has caused the expansion joint to fail, consider ordering a new expansion joint sized to fit the existing piping dimensions. If neither option is available, adjust the piping and order a new expansion joint to fit the existing installation.

Rubber Deterioration; If the joint feels soft, gummy or too stiff to move, plan to replace the expansion joint as soon as possible.

Leakage; If leakage or weeping is occurring from any surface of the expansion joint, except where flanges meet, replace the joint immediately. If leakage occurs between the mating flange and expansion joint flange, tighten all bolts (note the recommended torque settings). If this is not successful, turn off the system pressure, loosen all flange bolts and then re-tighten bolts in stages by alternating around the flange. Remove the expansion joint and inspect both rubber flanges and pipe mating flange faces for damage and surface condition. Repair or replace as required. Also, make sure the expansion joint is not over elongated as this can tend to pull the joint flange away from the mating flange resulting in leakage. If leakage persists, consult the manufacturer for additional recommendations.
