First scientific study by Charles de la Condamine

massive development of the synthetic rubber industry , although its properties does not correspond to all qualities of natural rubber.

India is the 4th largest producer of natural rubber 3rd largest consumer of the polymer Consumption of natural and synthetic rubber

together concerned , the country occupies the 4th position

Presently there are over 4300 manufacturing units , including 58 tyre factories, turning out products worth US$ 7.7 Billion, which is about 1.7% of the total industrial output of the country.

The total employment generation by the rubber product manufacturing industry is 465000

India is a major producer and consumer of natural rubber

India has entered the global market exporting both raw natural rubber as well as rubber products

India is emerging as a large market for rubber products and with the opening up of the economy, import of rubber products has also been increasing recent years

CHARACTERISTICS OF INDIAN RUBBER

INDUSTRY

Page 5: Rubber based industries

One of the important characteristics is the dominance of dry rubber based products

NR/SR consumption ratio in the country is presently 75:25

India is the world’s largest producer to reclaim rubber

India and China are the only two countries in the world which have the capacity to consume the entire indigenous production of natural rubber.

India is one of the leading rubber producers in the world.

Tyre and tubes are the largest consumers of rubber

Natural rubber (NR) exports from the country increased 280 per cent in the April-August period of this financial year.

Total exports were 12,219 tonnes as against 4,364 tonnes in the same period last year. The first commercial rubber plantations in India were established at Thattekadu  in 1902

During the period of second world war indian rubber farmers were encouraged to produce more rubber.

During and mainly after the war there is growing demand for the rubber .

The government forced to study more about the rubber industry that time.

The Rubber Production and Marketing (Amendment) Act,1954, amended the name of Board as the Rubber Board.

The functions of the Board as defined under the Act are:

To promote by such measures as it thinks fit the development of the rubber industry.

Without prejudice to the generality of the foregoing provision the measures referred to therein may provide for:

undertaking, assisting or encouraging scientific, technological or economic research.

training students in improved methods of planting, cultivation, manuring and spraying.

the supply of technical advice to rubber growers

improving the marketing of rubber.

the collection of statistics from owners of estates, dealers and manufacturers.

securing better working conditions and the provision and improvement of amenities and incentives to workers.

carrying out any other duties which may be vested with the Board as per rules made under this Act.

At 5.92 million tonnes per annum, natural rubber has 39 per cent of the world rubber consumption of 15.14 million tonne per annum.

The rubber industry is expected to grow

at over 8 per cent per annum this decade, as the per capita consumption of rubber is 0.8 kg against 14 kg in the developed world

FUTURE………..

India is likely to become the world's third-largest producer of natural rubber after Thailand and Indonesia, Rubber Board sources said.

ASEAN AGREEMENT

Association of southeast asian nations(ASEAN)

It was formed on 8th august 1967.

During the time of globalization to reduce expense. The members of ASEAN can have free trade between the member countries.

Page 13: Rubber based industries

The 10 countries in ASEAN are Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Brunei, Burma (Myanmar), Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam and Thailand.

The rubber trading in asean agreement is an issue now.

Government argues that rubber will get benefits from this agreement

Even though this agreement got signed on August 2009, it came into existence on January 2010.

Page 14: Rubber based industries

It has been predicted that in 2018, the world rubber consumption will reach 28 million tonnes.

NR share is expected to increase to about 50% in 2018.

65.5 % of NR consumption is now in Asia. China leads the NR consumption in Asia.

80% NR end up in tyres where Asia is now a dominant market for NR.

Malaysia is now behind Thailand and Indonesia in NR production.

In fact very soon the production in India may also exceed Malaysia’s.

Our present challenges are with the small-scale units and the major challenges are how they can cope up in the current scenario of :

Global Competition

unorganized

Rising Raw Material Cost

Reduction in Import Duty
