KAVA & RTVA KAVA’s partners Viewing stationsThe operations of the Radio and Television Ar-chive (RTVA), which began in 2008, are grounded in new legislation on the preservation of cultural materials. RTVA was founded as part of KAVA, the National Audiovisual Archive (the former Finnish Film Archive).

RTVA serves researchers and students by record-ing archived material in easy-to-review formats. In other words, television and radio programs are digitally captured directly from the program stream.

Digita Oy is responsible for the capture and W3 Group Oy for the program information manage-ment system. Technical expertise in recording, long-term storage of recorded files, and meta-data management is provided by CSC - IT Center for Science Ltd.

The law specifies, in addition to digital capture, the program types to be archived in the RTVA as original-quality physical specimens or files.

Room for researchers at KAVAs premises.

The Radio and Television Archive (RTVA) records the program stream of the primary radio and television channels in its entirety. Samples are also recorded from circa 100 other channels. The recording is executed in accordance with the annual recording plan prepared by KAVA and approved by the Ministry of Education and Culture. Recording began in 2009.

Clients can easily access the recorded program stream at RTVA viewing stations. Background information is offered in the form of program metadata collected from a variety of sources. All of the data is protected by copyright, and therefore may not be copied or re-recorded.
