Saturday was an absolute magic day, magic, magic, magic….
The second day of The Championships saw Tom Berry and Gai team up to claim three feature races. Following on closely from the passing of Nathan Berry the ‘moments’ during the day were all his for Tom, his family and friends, and all of us watching on. Each winner carried Nathan’s royal blue colours on their silks and each winner contributed to Tom winning (joint winner) the medal named in his brother’s honour.
Gai and Tom first combined on Diamond Drille in the Group 1 Queen of The Turf (1600m). Owned by the Kolivos family and carrying their, and Tom and Nathan’s, red and blue colours, the mare showed she was top class in beating Australia’s best mares at weight-for-age in just her second racing preparation. Pierro had just won the 2012 Golden Slipper when Gai purchased the daughter of Al Maher for Greg, Donna and Alex. At $200,000 she was a great type and right at the top end of the price spectrum for a filly by the sire but I remember Gai saying she would not be leaving Easter without her. The filly hails from the tough Pedrille family and her Group 1 victory now makes her a very valuable racing and breeding proposition.
The Offer made it two emerald horse ‘Championship’ trophies for Gai when he came out later in the day to score a decisive victory in the Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m). The son of Montjeu’s ‘one bid’ purchase out of the Tattersalls UK Horse in Training Sale was well documented in my newsletter last week and his victory was an emotional won yet again for Nathan Berry’s family and friends. The gelding has a special place in Tom’s heart after giving him first win after the tragedy, and again he carries the royal blue colours. The Offer is owned by a wonderful group of people, many of whom tasted Group 1 glory for the
first time and enjoyed every second of it. A number of others also owned Fiorente and so added this Cup to their Melbourne and Australian Cup haul this racing season.
The last race of the day saw a very important win for Cosmic Endeavour in the Group 2 Sapphire Stakes (1200m). Her owners Don and Judy Kelly are the most decent human beings you could ever wish to meet and they have been heavily involved in their Northern Meteor since purchasing her at Inglis Easter. A noted stockman, Don has a great eye for an athlete and he and Judy did not come to own this filly by chance. Inspecting each and every yearling filly at the 2013 sale, Don and Judy came together on this filly with Gai and bid strongly to secure her for $230,000. Like Diamond Drille, the Group victory makes her an attractive breeding proposition post racing, now a black type winning member of the Fairy King Prawn family. Cosmic Endeavour too carried silks with royal blue diamonds and sleeves.
Days of dominance like these are few and far between at major carnivals but they are extremely satisfying. Particularly so for the wider Gai Waterhouse team who work so hard, from 2.30am in the stable every morning, to 8pm finishes in the office each night.
It is probably one of the biggest things I have learned from Gai. Results are the product of work, and more work. Let me get back to it.

The All Aged Stakes
The All Aged Stakes (1400m) is the very last Group 1 race run during the Sydney Autumn
Carnival. The race will see the very best sprinters looking to extend themselves to the longer
distance, three-year-olds taking on the older horses and a number of good mares taking on
the opposite sex. The winner will need sustained speed and it promises to be very tactical and
great viewing.
