Version 1.1Note the formula for the volume of embankment removed in the breach has been updated in this version

Note: These instructions are intended as a guide to the features of this spreadsheet. Before any user relies on the results produced by the spreadsheet, they should ensure they are familiar with it and critically review all results.

Note: if any cells are moved (including as a result of inserting additional rows or columns) or calculation tables extended the spreadsheet might not function correctly. Cell references in the worksheets might have to be adjusted. Cell references in all macros will have to be adjusted to reflect these changes.

Start PageThe Instruction Page button takes to you this page.

To start a new model click the 'Start New Model' button. Starting a new model will clear all data in the workbook that is entered by the user. You will be prompted to enter the name of the dam, which will be used as the title for worksheets and graphs. You will also be prompted to save your model.

Storage CurveThe storage curve worksheet stores the storage curve of the dam for the sunny day and flood failure worksheets.

Select your method in the blue box.

Calculate Storage CurveEnter the Elevation, Volume and Surface Area (if known) for the base level and the full supply level.Enter the Elevation of the Dam Crest Level (DCL). If the DCL volume is known, you can add the DCL as a point in the additional points section.Enter a value for the freeboard above DCL. This is use to calculate the maximum value of your storage curve. Choose a freeboard such that the DCL elevation + freeboard equals slightly more than the elevation of failure you will use in the flood failure worksheet.Enter data for additional points (maximum of four points) under Known Points .Click the up and down buttons to find a storage curve that best matches your data. Ideally you want the actual known points to equal the estimated points (blue cells).If you do not know any additional points, click the 'No Additional Points Button' and an average standard curve will be used to generate your storage curve.

Use Own DataEnter the Elevation, Volume and Surface Area (if known) for the base level and the full supply level.

Click the 'Go to Storage Curve' button to go to the storage calculation area.

Discharge From DamThe discharge from a dam during a breach event is made up of several components(a) Flow through the spillway … In this spreadshhet it is assumed to take the form Q = C L H3/2

where C = a coefficient of discharge (typically about 1.6 for broad crested weirs but can be as high as 2 or even 2.1 for ogee spillway crests). Note the units of C are (metres1/2/sec)L = length across spillway (in metres)H = head across spillway (in metres)(b) Flow overtopping the dam embankment … Taken as 1.6 L H3/2 where L = length of the embankment and H = depth of overtopping (in metres)

(c) Flow through the breach - Taken as a broad crested weir type overflow = C L H3/2. Note: Some allowance for tailwater effects is built into the Breach Formation Factor by taking 80% of the difference between headwater and tailwater as the driving head for the formation of the breach. If the user considers that it will be completely unimpeded downstream of the breach, this should be increased to 100% (Cell G5) or reduced if it is effectively drowned. The discharge through the breach could also be modified to suit.

Up Stream InflowThe upstream inflow worksheet stores the inflow hydrograph for the flood failure worksheet.

The hydrograph is derived from scaling the duration and discharge of a standardised curve. This is achieved by changing the multiples for the time and flow ordinates (orange cells).Usually the peak discharge should occur at the time of concentration for the catchment and the peak discharge is that which produces the desired flood.

For a specific inflow/flood enter the hydrograph points into the blue cells. If more than the 22 points are used, ensure that the range for the lookup function in cells C19 to C113 on the flood failure worksheet reflect the range of the table.

Flood FailureThe flood failure spreadsheet calculates elements relating to a dam crest flow or dam crest flood failure.

Input values into all the orange cells.

Press the "Run Breach Macro" button for the program to calculate all elements in the spreadsheet.

Dam Crest Flood FailureAdjust the 'multiplier for flow ordinate' on the up stream inflow worksheet to produce a flood with maximum elevation (cell B17) equal to the elevation of failure (cell B6).Adjust the volume of water lost assumed (Cell G3) be close to the actual volume of water lost through the breach (Cell G4).Remember to press the "Run Breach Macro" button each time a value is changed that produces a peak headwater level greater than the assumed failure level.

Dam Crest FlowAdjust the 'multiplier for flow ordinate' on the up stream inflow worksheet to produce a flood with maximum elevation (cell B17) less than the elevation of failure (cell B6).Remember to press the "Run Breach Macro" button each time a value is changed.

In all cases the final breach size should be within the acceptable range. In some circumstances such as for large embankments with small storages, this may not be possible and some judgement may be needed.The breach development time factor multiplies the calculated breach development time by the given number. For normal calculations it should equal one but can be changed for sensitivity analyses.

The flood failure hydrograph worksheet presents all hydrographs calculated in the flood failure worksheet.

Sunny DayThe sunny day worksheet calculates elements relating to a sunny day failure of the dam.

Input values into all the orange cells.An initial 'piping elevation' needs to be nominated. This should be somewhere between the initial water level and the base EL of the breach. The slide bar can be used to vary it between the range in 1% increments to produce the maximum discharge.All elements are automatically calculated.

Sunny Day HydrographThe sunny day hydrograph worksheet presents the outflow hydrograph produced by a sunny day failure with NO inflows and a breach being initiated by the formation of a pipe somewhere between the spillway elevation and the base of the dam.Use the slide control to vary the elevation of the initial pipe to determine the maximum discharge.

Run ProblemsIf the flood hydrographs produce 'hunting', shorten the time step to produce a smoother curve

To start a new model click the 'Start New Model' button. Starting a new model will clear all data in the workbook that is entered by the user. You will be prompted to enter the name of the dam, which will be used as the title for worksheets and graphs. You will also be prompted to save your model.

Storage CurveThe storage curve worksheet stores the storage curve of the dam for the sunny day and flood failure worksheets.

Calculate Storage CurveEnter the Elevation, Volume and Surface Area (if known) for the base level and the full supply level.Enter the Elevation of the Dam Crest Level (DCL). If the DCL volume is known, you can add the DCL as a point in the additional points section.Enter a value for the freeboard above DCL. This is use to calculate the maximum value of your storage curve. (c) Flow through the breach - Taken as a broad crested weir type overflow = C L H3/2. Note: Some allowance for tailwater effects is built into the Breach Formation Factor by taking 80% of the difference between headwater and tailwater as the driving head for the formation of the breach. If the user considers that it will be completely unimpeded downstream of the breach, this should be increased to 100% (Cell G5) or reduced if it is effectively drowned. The discharge through the breach could also be modified to suit.

Up Stream InflowThe upstream inflow worksheet stores the inflow hydrograph for the flood failure worksheet.

The hydrograph is derived from scaling the duration and discharge of a standardised curve. This is achieved by changing the multiples for the time and flow ordinates (orange cells).Usually the peak discharge should occur at the time of concentration for the catchment and the peak discharge is that which produces the desired flood.

For a specific inflow/flood enter the hydrograph points into the blue cells. If more than the 22 points are used, ensure that the range for the lookup function in cells C19 to C113 on the flood failure worksheet reflect the range of the table.

Flood FailureThe flood failure spreadsheet calculates elements relating to a dam crest flow or dam crest flood failure.

Input values into all the orange cells.

Press the "Run Breach Macro" button for the program to calculate all elements in the spreadsheet.

Dam Crest Flood FailureAdjust the 'multiplier for flow ordinate' on the up stream inflow worksheet to produce a flood with maximum elevation (cell B17) equal to the elevation of failure (cell B6).Adjust the volume of water lost assumed (Cell G3) be close to the actual volume of water lost through the breach (Cell G4).Remember to press the "Run Breach Macro" button each time a value is changed that produces a peak headwater level greater than the assumed failure level.

Dam Crest FlowAdjust the 'multiplier for flow ordinate' on the up stream inflow worksheet to produce a flood with maximum elevation (cell B17) less than the elevation of failure (cell B6).Remember to press the "Run Breach Macro" button each time a value is changed.

In all cases the final breach size should be within the acceptable range. In some circumstances such as for large embankments with small storages, this may not be possible and some judgement may be needed.The breach development time factor multiplies the calculated breach development time by the given number. For normal calculations it should equal one but can be changed for sensitivity analyses.

The slide bar can be used to vary it between the range in 1% increments to produce the maximum discharge.All elements are automatically calculated.

Note: These instructions are intended as a guide to the features of this spreadsheet. Before any user relies on the results produced by the spreadsheet, they should ensure they are familiar with it and critically review all results.

Note: if any cells are moved (including as a result of inserting additional rows or columns) or calculation tables extended the spreadsheet might not function correctly. Cell references in the worksheets might have to be adjusted. Cell references in all macros will have to be adjusted to reflect these changes.

Start PageThe Instruction Page button takes to you this page.

To start a new model click the 'Start New Model' button. Starting a new model will clear all data in the workbook that is entered by the user. You will be prompted to enter the name of the dam, which will be used as the title for worksheets and graphs. You will also be prompted to save your model.

Storage CurveThe storage curve worksheet stores the storage curve of the dam for the sunny day and flood failure worksheets.

Select your method in the blue box.

Calculate Storage CurveEnter the Elevation, Volume and Surface Area (if known) for the base level and the full supply level.Enter the Elevation of the Dam Crest Level (DCL). If the DCL volume is known, you can add the DCL as a point in the additional points section.Enter a value for the freeboard above DCL. This is use to calculate the maximum value of your storage curve. Choose a freeboard such that the DCL elevation + freeboard equals slightly more than the elevation of failure you will use in the flood failure worksheet.Enter data for additional points (maximum of four points) under Known Points .Click the up and down buttons to find a storage curve that best matches your data. Ideally you want the actual known points to equal the estimated points (blue cells).If you do not know any additional points, click the 'No Additional Points Button' and an average standard curve will be used to generate your storage curve.

Use Own DataEnter the Elevation, Volume and Surface Area (if known) for the base level and the full supply level.

Click the 'Go to Storage Curve' button to go to the storage calculation area.

where C = a coefficient of discharge (typically about 1.6 for broad crested weirs but can be as high as 2 or even 2.1 for ogee spillway crests). Note the units of C are (metres1/2/sec)L = length across spillway (in metres)H = head across spillway (in metres)(b) Flow overtopping the dam embankment … Taken as 1.6 L H3/2 where L = length of the embankment and H = depth of overtopping (in metres)

(c) Flow through the breach - Taken as a broad crested weir type overflow = C L H3/2. Note: Some allowance for tailwater effects is built into the Breach Formation Factor by taking 80% of the difference between headwater and tailwater as the driving head for the formation of the breach. If the user considers that it will be completely unimpeded downstream of the breach, this should be increased to 100% (Cell G5) or reduced if it is effectively drowned. The discharge through the breach could also be modified to suit.

Up Stream InflowThe upstream inflow worksheet stores the inflow hydrograph for the flood failure worksheet.

The hydrograph is derived from scaling the duration and discharge of a standardised curve. This is achieved by changing the multiples for the time and flow ordinates (orange cells).Usually the peak discharge should occur at the time of concentration for the catchment and the peak discharge is that which produces the desired flood.

For a specific inflow/flood enter the hydrograph points into the blue cells. If more than the 22 points are used, ensure that the range for the lookup function in cells C19 to C113 on the flood failure worksheet reflect the range of the table.

Flood FailureThe flood failure spreadsheet calculates elements relating to a dam crest flow or dam crest flood failure.

Input values into all the orange cells.

Press the "Run Breach Macro" button for the program to calculate all elements in the spreadsheet.

Dam Crest Flood FailureAdjust the 'multiplier for flow ordinate' on the up stream inflow worksheet to produce a flood with maximum elevation (cell B17) equal to the elevation of failure (cell B6).Adjust the volume of water lost assumed (Cell G3) be close to the actual volume of water lost through the breach (Cell G4).Remember to press the "Run Breach Macro" button each time a value is changed that produces a peak headwater level greater than the assumed failure level.

Dam Crest FlowAdjust the 'multiplier for flow ordinate' on the up stream inflow worksheet to produce a flood with maximum elevation (cell B17) less than the elevation of failure (cell B6).Remember to press the "Run Breach Macro" button each time a value is changed.

In all cases the final breach size should be within the acceptable range. In some circumstances such as for large embankments with small storages, this may not be possible and some judgement may be needed.The breach development time factor multiplies the calculated breach development time by the given number. For normal calculations it should equal one but can be changed for sensitivity analyses.

Sunny DayThe sunny day worksheet calculates elements relating to a sunny day failure of the dam.

Input values into all the orange cells.An initial 'piping elevation' needs to be nominated. This should be somewhere between the initial water level and the base EL of the breach. The slide bar can be used to vary it between the range in 1% increments to produce the maximum discharge.All elements are automatically calculated.

Sunny Day HydrographThe sunny day hydrograph worksheet presents the outflow hydrograph produced by a sunny day failure with NO inflows and a breach being initiated by the formation of a pipe somewhere between the spillway elevation and the base of the dam.Use the slide control to vary the elevation of the initial pipe to determine the maximum discharge.
