    ON-LINE RACER

MAGAZINEMARL Round 3Kevin Myers became the first

repeat winner of the Mid Atlantic

    Racing leagues season three, as

    he bested Mike Swanson at

    Lanier Speedway in Braselton

Georgia this past week. The win

for Myers backed up his earlier

victory at Dover to cement the

    Ohio driver as a serious

contender for the MARL crown asthe series heads towards its

chase later in the season. This

race marks the first time MARL

    has visited Lanier, to mixed

    reviews among the drivers and

    crews. Notably, Ricky VanWhy

    and Mike Swanson were not

terribly happy to be racing at the

    3/8 mile track, while Scott

    Burlovich appeared to be

unhappy with the balance of hiscar in happy hour. Trae Forsythe

and Kevin Myers were far more

    optimistic, and it showed;

Forsythe put his #4 Orange Crush

machine on the pole, with Myers

    being fastest during practice.

    Unfortunately for Myers, a rookie

    crew member thought he was

doing the team a favour before

qualifying, when he noticed thechecklist had no tick mark

beside the fuel box...and proceeded to

top off the tank. As a result Myers started

shotgun on the field, although in the end

that wouldnt matter much. Short track

    ace Scott Burlovichs unusual troubles

during this seasons short track events

started early, as race officials pulled his

car from his 2nd place grid start for an

    undisclosed infraction forcing the

Canadian driver to start the race from pitlane. Forsythe paced the pack early,

however Mike Swanson wasted no time

getting to the front from his third place

position passing Trae for the lead on lap

eight; in all Swanson would lead 125 of

150 laps at Lanier. Trouble came early for

several drivers, with Forsythe spinning to

bring out the first of two cautions and

even spinning in tandem with Burlovich

later in the event. Scotts day went frombad to worse and for the second week in a

    row the Butterfly Communications crew

watched in dismay as their machine was

forced to withdraw from the event.

Burlovich left the track without comment.

Meanwhile VanWhy ran a steady, if not

uneventful race to bring his Kidde ride

home in 3rd with Forsythe in 4th some 19

laps off the pace. Myers would capitalize

on pit miscues by the WestJet team late inthe race to pull off the victory, as a late

race caution brought the field in for

    service. Les Cormier (Swansons crew

chief) elected for two tires on the stop

with no fuel; both turned out to be grave

mistakes. After the event the press

hovered outside the WestJet hauler as

    tempers flared between Swanson and

Cormier; Swanson had been forced to pit

with just a handful of laps left for fuel.Whats worse, the two tire stop had taken

the race out of the leaders hands with a

mere nine laps remaining as Myers

easily handled the ailing #2 car,

pulling away quickly after the pass.

    The controversy left competitors in

the garage area wondering if this

might just be the chink in the armour

of the WestJet team they have been

looking for. As for Myers, pulling into

victory lane was a pleasant surprise.

Its nice to steal one at the end likethat; Ill take it! The Radicals Online

pilot finished as the only car on the

lead lap. Next week for the Mid

    Atlantic Racing league: The

    Milwaukee Mile.
