Did you know?

The first Rás na mBan champion was Stephanie Gronow from Berlin who won the inaugural two-day event in County Dublin in 2006 against 74 other riders representing teams from Poland, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, the Isle of Man and Britain, as well as Ireland.

Coralie Demay from Brittany won the stage four time trial on her way to overall victory in 2018, the first win for a French rider in Rás na mBan.

It’s my very great pleasure to welcome riders, officials and all bike racing fans to Rás na mBan 2019, the fourteenth edition of the race and the fourth to be based in County Kilkenny. I’m delighted to say that once again we have top international riders from all over the world making the journey to beautiful Kilkenny City by the River Nore.Whether you’re a first timer or a regular competitor I’d like to wish you all a heartfelt ‘céad míle fáilte’ and I hope you enjoy your week’s racing.

Last year’s event was popularly judged the best to date so we have focused on retaining the main elements of a successful formula, with four road stages, a time trial and a city centre criterium circuit race making up 400km of racing from Wednesday through to Sunday.

It’s been especially uplifting to experience the welcome of all in County Kilkenny for the event and the help we have been given by all in Kilkenny County Council, local cycling clubs and the local business community has helped ease the daunting task of promoting a five-day international bike race.

We would also like to acknowledge the great help and support from An Garda Síochána in Kilkenny and surrounding counties for their assistance in running the event

We have two all-new stages that I feel confident will be a hit with both riders and spectators. The stage two journey south to Piltown includes a finishing circuit with a challenging climb while stage three is our first visit to County Laois and includes the tough climbs of the Wolftrap Mountain and The Cut in the Slieve Bloom Mountains.

We’re grateful to Laois County Council for their assistance in running stage three.

The race benefits from a dedicated committee of skilled and committed personnel performing myriad unseen tasks throughout the year. To this core group can be added a dedicated band of commissaires, timekeepers, finish crew, drivers, mechanics, motorbike marshals, static marshals and countless other officials without whom this event would not occur. To all of them I say thank you and remind all competitors of their sacrifice for the good of women’s cycling.

We are very grateful for the support of some of the best backers in Irish sport.

Cycling Ireland has again recognised the importance of this race to the development of the sport with an increased commitment, the Women’s Commission of Cycling Ireland are backing the Young Rider Classification again, while the Irish Veterans Cyclists Association continue their support of the Wicklow 200 Queen of the Mountains classification that stretches back to the very start of the event in 2006.

Honda Ireland has stepped in once more to provide official race cavalcade vehicles and support the stage four time trial while Europcar Kilkenny have supplied vans to help with transport and logistics. We’re delighted to welcome a new commercial partner with Pactimo supplying the superb new jerseys to be worn by classification leaders.

The refreshed look of the event has been aided by the assistance of Just-Print.ie in providing event signage and Just-Print.ie have increased their involvement to support the stage winner’s jersey. Fáilte Ireland have also brought vital support to this landmark event. Our event timing service is provided by Joe Daly Cycles while InForm Sport Media continue to supply their excellent PR and event marketing support.

A single other individual has also provided significant financial assistance to the event and we’d like to thank them again for their wonderful support this year. They know who they are and we really are very grateful.

To all involved, I hope you enjoy the race.

Yours in cycling,

Valerie Considine Race Director

Lydia Boylan (picture in 2016) is a three-time national road race title winner with two second placed finishes in Rás na mBan to her name.

This year’s entry for An Post Rás na mBan is among the most competitive in the 13-year history of the event. Here is a selection of some of the riders likely to feature during the week.Alice Sharpe (Ireland) - Team IrelandIreland’s national road race champion won her title in emphatic fashion in June to add to a body of racing performances across the last 12 months that suggest a talent still in blossom. Impressive solo rides in the European Championships in Glasgow and at the world championships in Innsbruck last September helped Sharpe to earn a place on the UCI World Cycling Centre team this season. Eighth overall in 2017 and twice 15th either side of that result, Sharpe is on a different level now and ready to contend.Lydia Boylan (Ireland) –Torelli Assure MadisonDubliner Boylan won a world championship silver medal with her stunning late attack in the Points Race in Poland last March. She is also a European medallist in the Keirin and she has an impressive palmares on the road, too.A three-time Irish National road race champion and a stage winner in the past in Setmana Ciclista Valenciana in Spain, Boylan was second overall in the 2016 and 2012 Rás na mBan and will relish an opportunity with the Team Torelli Assure Madison team to pitch for a place on the top step.Lara Gillespie (Ireland) – Team IrelandA world championship bronze medallist in the Individual Pursuit at the junior world championships last month, Wicklow’s Gillespie continues to deliver at the highest level after national and European championships success in the past two years. In Mayo’s Maeve Gallagher, Gillespie has an Ireland team-mate who has beaten her in the National Road Race Championships and who is the reigning Kilkenny CoCo Best Irish Rider at Rás na mBan making it a time of exceptional strength among the Ireland juniors.

Rhona Callander (Scotland) – Team Great BritainA stage winner for Team GB in Rás na mBan 12 months ago, Scotland’s Rhona Callander is an all-rounder who has a fine sprint in her armoury. The Edinburgh rider is part of a strong Team GB line up which has animated Rás na mBan with big performances over the past two years. Her Scottish team mate Anna Shackley was best British rider in the recent Tour of Scotland emphasising the strength in depth of the GB line-up.Elynor Backstedt (Wales) – Storey RacingSilver medallist in the World Championship Individual Pursuit last month, Backstedt has won numerous national, European and world medals on track and road and won the Ghent Wevelgem Junior race in March.. Daughter of former British road race champion Megan Hughes and Paris Roubaix winner Magnus Backstedt, Elynor is continuing a grand family tradition and finished 12th overall in Rás na mBan two years ago.Amalie Lutro (Norway) - Team Region SørFirst year professional Lutro rides week to week with the Norwegian Hitech UCI team and comes to Ireland as guest of her regional squad with a season of tough UCI racing in her legs. A national medallist in the road race and time trial in the past two years, Lutro knows Ras na mBan and is another rider who has benefited from a development year.

EPIC STAGES

On the eve of the 14th edition of Rás na mBan it’s a good time to reflect on some of the epic days of bike racing in the history of the event. Here is a small selection of great memories reflecting the courage, athleticism and extraordinary topography of Rás na mBan over the years... 2009 Stage 1 - ‘Moll’s Gap’ - Trott at a CanterAt the outset of a distinguished pro career Emma Trott - older sister of Olympic champ Laura - arrived at her first Rás na mBan ‘fresh’ from a tough slog around the Holland Ladies Tour. Undaunted, the Moving Ladies team rider raced clear on the road to Kenmare after 15km to spend pretty much the entire first stage dangling off the front of the bunch by less than a minute. Trott did briefly extend her lead on the ascent to Kerry’s famous landmark at Moll’s Gap before racing down the descent to take the first leader’s jersey of the then three- day event by just 37s. Trott defended her lead through the remaining three stages to become the first British winner of Rás na mBan. 2011 Stage 3 - ‘Healy Pass’ - Dillon on FireOlivia Dillon had a point to prove when the riders faced the starter’s flag for the 80km third stage of the 2011 race. Having just heard that no Irish team would be heading to the World Road Race Championships Dillon was out to show what they were missing. Already in the pink leader’s jersey and on her way to her second overall win in the event, Dillon charged up Healy Pass with only the Netherlands’ Linda Ringlever (Moving Ladies) for company by the top. With just 35km completed Dillon set off on her own for a 45km solo adventure around the roads of Kerry with a little bit of County Cork thrown in. She had almost two minutes in hand by the finish line back in Kenmare with the entire field strewn all over the roads of Munster. Dillon had secured her second overall Rás na mBan win in the most emphatic fashion. Point made.

2012 Stage 5 - ‘The Ballaghs’ - Boddy DoubleBy the fourth day of five legs were starting to soften in Kerry when the organisers dropped a grenade into the bunch in the form of the 95km ‘Queen’ stage which included the awesome climbs of Ballaghabeama and Ballaghasheen followed by Coomaciste for dessert. World class Danish junior Amalie Dideriksen danced up the mountains on her way to the IVCA climbers jersey while High Wycombe sprint ace Karla Boddy charged down the final descent to get back in contention to take her second successive stage win. Boddy made it a hat trick on the final day as Dideriksen’s team mate Kamilla Sofie Vallin took a great win for Team Rytger on their first visit to the race. 2017 Stage 3 Mount Leinster – Barker Pounces The second visit to Kilkenny for Rás na mBan featured the already classic sojourn into Wexford and Carlow for the windswept ascent of Mount Leinster to a summit finish at Nine Stones.Britain’s Elinor Barker, a gold medal winner on the track at the Rio Olympics put Team GB squad on the front early on and let the steepening gradient take care of the rest. Race leader Belle de Gast of the Netherlands was left floundering on the lower slopes of Corrabut Gap as Barker made her move, the Cardiff woman reeling in and quickly distancing the remains of the early break. 2018 Stage 4 Tullaroan – Demay By a WhiskerHaving proved inseparable on the arduous climb of Mount Leinster the previous day, race leader Nikki Juniper (TC Racing) and Coralie Demay (Team Breizh) faced the challenge of 6.5km against the watch in the hilly time trial at Tullaroan. Demay prevailed by just four seconds over Juniper to win her first stage and take an overall lead she would hold to the finish to become the first French winner of Rás na mBan.

Elinor Barker (Team GB) alone in her suffering on Mount Leinster in 2017 and on

her way to an emphatic stage victory and a commanding overall race lead.

WHERE TO WATCH THE RACE

Want to check out the action in Ireland’s top international stage race for women? The 14th edition of Rás na mBan kicks off in Kilkenny on Wednesday 4th September and the best women bike riders from Ireland and abroad are busy making their final preparations for the five-day epic.

Riders from a total of 19 different countries are set to do battle over 400km of racing on six separate stages across the five days on some of the most beautiful roads in and around County Kilkenny.

Here’s our guide to the best places to catch the action during the week. It’s going to be an epic week of top class bike racing. Here’s where to see all the action.

Stage One – Wednesday 4th September 70kmGraiguenamanagh – 33km Time Expected: From 17:34

After rolling out from the stage start at the Springhill Court Hotel in Kilkenny it’s likely that a large group will still be together approaching the first categorised climb of the week at 27km when the group will start to thin out. See the riders race through historic Graguenamangh on the banks of the Barrow six km later and try to make time for a visit to historic Duiske Abbey.

Stage Two – Thursday 5th September 90kmPiltown – 49km, 68km, 90km Time Expected: From 13:10, 13:37 and 14:05

This all new stage for 2019 kicks off at Kilkenny RFC and sends the riders south of Kilkenny to the beautiful town of Piltown where they will join a 19km finishing circuit to be completed twice. Riders will cross the finishing line three times and the circuit includes a tough climb at The Sweep. Spectators may want to see the riders on the Sweep once before heading back into Piltown to see which riders have survived at the front to contest stage honours on Main Street.

Stage Three – Friday 6th September 112kmThe Cut, Slieve Blooms, County Laois - 110km Time Expected: From 14:35

This epic all-new for 2019 stage will go a long way to deciding who dons the final magenta Rás na mBan jersey in 2018. This is the toughest day of climbing in the race and a first visit to the beautiful Slieve Blooms region in Laois. Following the tough climb of Wolftrap, the riders will face the final summit finish to The Cut. By the time the leading riders emerge into view, they’ll have three tough days of racing in their legs and there’s sure to be a lot of distance between the first and last rider to complete. Stay and cheer them all on and why not bring your bike and try the hill for yourself?

Stage Four – Saturday 7th September 6.4kmTullaroan – Honda Individual Time Trial start and finish Time Expected: From 10:00 - 12:13

Unique among the six stages, the riders race alone against the clock in the shortest stage of the event but one that is sure to have a big influence on the general classification. Riders roll down the Honda Ireland start ramp outside Tullaroan GAA club and ride up the challenging climb to the beautiful setting of the wind farm at Ballybay.

Riders race at minute intervals so there’s plenty of opportunity to cheer each rider in their personal challenge against the course and the watch.

Stage Five – Saturday 7th September 40kmKilkenny Castle – City Centre ‘Criterium’ Race Start and Finish Time Expected: From 18:30 - 19:20

What is likely to be the fastest stage of the race is very much one for the speed merchants with a spectacular big bunch sprint the aim for those with the right combination of skill, power and daring. There’s plenty for the spectator to see at the start line beside the historic medieval Kilkenny Castle as the riders appear every three minutes or so racing through approximately 18 laps of the 2.1 kilometre circuit and sprinting regularly for intermediate ‘prime’ prizes along the way. Who’ll be first through the final corner with 150 metres to go?

Stage Six – Sunday 8th September 90kmWoodstock Climb, Inistioge – 46km Time Expected: From 12.30

The riders will coax weary legs into action for the final push, a 90km circuitous route through south Kilkenny to Inistioge before tackling the steep ascent of Woodstock where the strongest will be planning a final ambush. See the riders on the climb and then take the short route back through Gowran and up the Medieval Mile in Kilkenny to see the conclusion of the stage at Kilkenny Castle. Soak up the atmosphere and welcome the riders home where the overall winner will be crowned and each of the remaining riders in the event will claim their much coveted Rás na mBan finisher’s medal.

RÁS NA MBAN ON TV!This year’s event is being filmed for a highlights programme to be broadcast on Eurosport on the weekend after the final stage. Check schedules for up to date viewing times.

What is Rás na mBan?Ireland’s only international stage cycle race for women. It’s the premier cycling event on the Irish racing calendar and this year is the 14th edition. There has been an international stage race of some type almost every year since 1986.

Who’s Racing?Rás na mBan riders are high performance athletes. This is not a charity bike ride or a mass participation challenge event. Many of the riders are full-time paid professionals and all of them are dedicated themselves to their sport 100%. The top riders and teams in Ireland are doing battle with riders from 18 other nations for the coveted Rás na mBan title. Olympic and World champions are listed among the former winners of Rás na mBan.

What is Stage Racing?A multi-day event with numerous separate ‘stages’ from which the overall winner and the various other classifications emerge. Bicycle road racing is the most popular form of competition cycling worldwide.

Events typically include a variety of different terrain and styles of event and Rás na mBan is no different. This year’s race includes four endurance road races on varying terrain, a solo time trial race where riders race solo against the watch and a short circuit ‘criterium’ race in Kilkenny City Centre which is the fastest stage of the week.

How Does it Work?Road race cycling is a race for individual riders who depend on the help of their team-mates to achieve their best result. The winner is the rider who completes all of the stages in the shortest cumulative time.

All of the tactics of road racing derive from the fact that a rider uses much less energy sitting in the slipstream of others than riding in front ‘in the wind’. Teams will shelter their team leaders from the wind for as much of the stage as possible and chase down ‘attacks’ by other riders trying to ‘break away’ from the slipstream of the other riders.

The BikesRoad racing bicycles conform to a strict set of regulations set down by the UCI, the governing body of international cycling. The minimum weight is 6.8kg and many of the bikes are ballasted to meet that minimum. The main frame set and much of the componentry including the wheelrims is constructed from carbon composite material. The bikes will typically have between 22 and 24 separate gear ratios, adjusted daily to suit the terrain.

GlossaryMany of the terms in road race cycle have been adopted from French.Peloton (from French meaning ‘platoon’) The main bunch of riders from which all other groups emerge – either the ‘breakaway’ group up front or ‘dropped’ riders distanced by the peloton.BidonThe waterbottle riders carry to stay hydrated. Riders usually carry two on the bike and will get replacements from the team car or at feed stations during the longer stages.AttackTo quickly accelerate while riding in a pack, or in smaller numbers, with a view to create a gap between yourself and other riders.Breakawayor ‘break’ in short, is when a small group of riders or an individual have successfully opened a gap ahead of the peloton.ClimberA rider who specializes in riding uphill quickly, usually due to having a high power-to-weight ratio.SprinterRider with the ability to generate very high power over short periods (a few seconds to a minute) allowing for great finishing speeds, though not necessarily able to sustain sufficiently high power over long periods to be a good time triallist, have a high enough power-to-weight ratio to be a good climberCommissaireA race judge or referee. In road-racing they are usually based in a car following the event or on a motorcycle.DomestiqueA rider whose job is to support and work for other riders in their team (literally “servant” in French). A ‘Domestique’ will chase down competitors and try to neutralise their efforts; they will often protect their team leader from the wind by surrounding her.EchelonA line of riders seeking maximum slipstreaming in a crosswind, resulting in a diagonal line across the road.Individual time trialRace where riders set off at fixed intervals and complete the course against the clock.Queen of the Mountains (or “QOM”)The title given to the best climber in Rás na mBan. The leader wears the Wicklow 200 jersey.PrimePrimes (pronounced preem, after the French word for “gift”) are intermediate sprints within a race, usually offering a prize or points. Primes are a way to encourage more competitive riding, and also an opportunity for companies to gain publicity by sponsoring a prime.
