Die Jakaranda- en Louis Botha-kinderhui-se het Vrydagaand een van hul grootste produksies in dié kinderhuise se ge-skiedenis aangebied. Honderde mense van regoor Pretoria het by die Heartfelt Arena in Thaba Tshwane bymekaar gekom waar hulle deur die land se mees geliefde kunstenaars vermaak is. Bekendes soos Theuns Jordaan, Juanita du Plessis, Kurt Darren, ADAM, Ricus Nel, Liza Brönner, Pieter Koen en nog ander kunstenaars het vir groot vermaak gesorg. Al die geld wat tydens dié musiekskouspel ingesamel is word aan die Jakaranda- en Louis Botha-kinderhuise geskenk en vir die kinders se welstand en ontwikkeling aangewend. Honderde by Heartfelt
Die gemeenskap in die Bon Accord-omge-wing lewe in vrees nadat ’n bejaarde man tydens ’n rooftog die afgelope naweek met ’n byl en graaf vermoor, en sy vrou ernstig beseer is.
Laszlow Bercsényi (87) is in die Netcare Montana-hospitaal dood na hy en sy vrou, Carol op ’n kleinhoewe in dié omgewing deur vyf rowers met ’n graaf en byl aangeval is.
Die Bercsényi-egpaar is vermoedelik omstreeks 18:00 Saterdagmiddag deur die rowers oorval. Dit is glo die derde geval in die omgewing waar ’n byl in ’n rooftog as wapen gebruik is.
Volgens polisiewoordvoerder kaptein Jo-hannes Maheso was die egpaar alleen by die huis toe die rowers hulle oorrompel het.
“Die man is in die kombuis en die vrou in die perdestalle op die hoewe aangeval,” het
hy bygevoeg. Maheso kon hom nie oor die aard van die
egpaar se beserings uitlaat nie. Rekord het egter verneem dat die vrou,
wat na vermoed word steeds in die hospitaal is, wonde aan haar gesig opgedoen het ter-wyl haar man erge kopbeserings gehad het.
Die man is vermoedelik aan dié bese-rings dood. Volgens Maheso ondersoek die Sinoville-polisie ’n saak van gewapende roof en poging tot moord.
Die vyf verdagtes is steeds soek. Volgens Livio Heath, ondervoorsitter van
die Pretoria-Noord-sektorpolisie, is dit die derde geval waar ’n byl gebruik word as wapen.
Heath het gesê verlede Dinsdag en
Saterdag was daar ook ’n aanval waar ’n byl gebruik is. Geen persoon is beseer tydens dié aanvalle nie.
“Dit is die derde bylaanval in hierdie omgewing wat Bon Accord, Rooiwal en Honingnestkrans insluit.”
Heath het gesê mense in die omgewing is oorweldig van vrees oor die groot hoeveel-heid gewapende rooftogte in die noorde van Pretoria.
“Gesinne vrees vir hul lewe en kan selfs nie slaap nie as gevolg van die gevare in die omgewing. Die landelike gebiede sover soos Cullinan loop gebuk deur misdaad en dit raak almal,” het hy bygevoeg.
Intussen het Jaco Mulder, die VF Plus-leier in Gauteng, sy bekommernis oor die
polisie se onbekwaamdheid in die omgewing uitgespreek.
“Die polisie is nie meer in staat om die publiek te beskerm nie,” het Mulder gesê.
Hy het bygevoeg weens die disfunk-sionele misdaadintelligensie-eenheid en swak opgeleide speurdiens maak dit maklik vir geweldsmisdadigers om weerlose teikens aan te val en daarmee weg te kom.
“’n Effektiewe misdaadintelligensiestelsel is ’n absolute voorvereiste vir die voorko-ming van misdaad,” het Mulder gesê.
Rekord het die afgelope jaar oor verskeie gevalle van gewapende roof in die Bon Accord-omgewing berig.
Herman Engelbrecht van Daspoort is verlede jaar Oktober tydens ’n gewapende roof in sy linkerhand geskiet toe hy drie booswigte met ’n kettie probeer afweer het. Die rooftog wat by die kampterrein by Bon Accorddam plaasgevind het was maar een van vele soortgelyke aanvalle in dié gebied.

Inwoners van die noorde van Pretoria wat gereeld die Zandfontein-begraafplaas in die weste van Pretoria besoek was onlangs geskok oor die vervalle toestand van die begraafplaas.
“Die begraafplaas lyk soos ’n groot ashoop en baie van die grafte het na die on-langse reën begin inval. Niemand doen iets daaromtrent nie,” het ’n ontstelde Naomi van der Walt, van Montana, wat gereeld die grafte van haar geliefdes besoek gesê.
Volgens Van der Walt is die gras so lank dat besoekers nie die ingevalle grafte sal raaksien voor hulle reeds daarin getrap of selfs geval het nie. Haar eenjarige kleinkind het self onlangs in een van die ingesonke grafte geval maar is gelukkig nie beseer nie.
“Daar lê oral bierbottels en ander rom-mel rond en toe ek vir die vrou wat in die kantoor by die begraafplaas werk vra wie verantwoordelik vir die skoonmaak van
die perseel is, het sy verduidelik dat die be-graafplaas slegs elke tweede of derde maand skoongemaak word,” het Naomi bygevoeg.
Melia van der Walt, ook van die noorde en ’n gereelde besoeker aan die begraaf-plaas kon ook nie haar teleurstelling oor die toestand van die Rebeccastraat-begraafplaas wegsteek nie. “Die gras is so lank. Sedert November verlede jaar probeer ek gereeld die begraafplaas kontak om ’n klag te lê, maar die telefoon word net nooit beant-woord nie.
“Ek is ’n bejaarde en bang om alleen soontoe te gaan. Die laaste keer wat ek daar was het ek maar self die onkruid voor my pa se graf uitgetrek,” het Melia gesê.
Tydens Rekord se besoek is gevind dat byna al die grafte in die U-blok van die begraafplaas ingeval het. Daar was ook geen asblikke in dié blok te sien nie.

A woman appeared in the Pre-toria North Magistrate’s Court recently for shooting and kill-ing her former boyfriend over the weekend.
Lin Pretorius (36) was arrested after the death of her former boyfriend Her-man Faber (28) on Saturday evening.
Faber, a software devel-oper, was found dead with a chest wound in his home in Montana. According to Sinoville police spokesperson, Mirna von Benecke, a case of murder was opened and is cur-
rently being investigated.She also said it is be-
lieved that the incident was domestic-related. A close friend and former housemate of Faber, who asked to remain anonymous, said it was a great sadness to have lost a wonder-ful and skillful man. He said Faber was a unique person with a positive outlook on life.
He added that he and Faber studied together at the Belgium Campus in Pretoria North. “He spent most of his spare time playing computer games. He was genuinely a one-of-a-kind person,” his saddened friend said.

’n Laerskool in die noorde van Pretoria het besluit om hand by te sit en ’n tienjarige leerling van die skool, wat onlangs deur ’n hond op sy gesin se kleinhoewe in Onderste-poort aangeval is, te ondersteun.
Laerskool Danie Malan het ’n inisiatief op die been gebring om die seun geldelik by te staan sodat hy die nodige fi sioterapie kan ontvang.
Corné Kruger wat op 5 Maart deur ’n Boerboel verskeur is, het erge beserings aan sy regterarm en boud opgedoen.
Kruger se ma, Clarissa het gesê die hond, wat aan ’n familielid behoort, was die dag van die voorval aan ’n ketting vasgemaak wat gebreek het. Corné het gesê hy het die hond op hom sien afstorm en sy oupa het geskree hy moet weghardloop.
“Ek het baie groot geskrik en probeer om weg te hardloop maar die hond het op my gespring,” het Corné vertel.
Die hond het hom volgens Clarissa aan sy boud beetgekry en wou sy keel bykom. Sy, en ’n familielid het probeer om Corné uit die hond se greep te kry toe die Boerboel hom sy arm gegryp het.
Corné moes ’n operasie by die Steve Biko Akademiese hospitaal ondergaan om die spiere aan sy regterarm wat in die aanval geskeur het weer vas te heg en het meer as 25 steke ontvang. Meer as ’n maand later het sy arm steeds nog nie ten volle herstel nie. Volgens sy ma sukkel hy om sy hand op en af te beweeg en omdat hy regshandig is kan hy dus nie meer met sy regterhand skryf nie.
Hy ontvang tans fi sioterapie om die pro-bleem op te los. Clarissa het gesê sy en haar man sukkel om met die rekeninge vir die fi sioterapie by te hou.
Danie Malan se skoolhoof, Hettie Smith, het gesê die skool het die inisiatief van sta-pel gestuur om die gesin te help.
“Die terapie is baie duur en die gesin kry swaar. Ons by die skool wil graag sien dat Corné ten volle herstel en daarom moedig ons mense aan om te skenk.”

Telkom are warning customers to be on alert after fraudsters posted and e-mailed a spate of fraudulent letters to residents.
“They deposit a stolen or counterfeit cheque into a customer’s account and then on a false Telkom letterhead, inform the customer that Telkom has wrongly de-posited the cheque into the customer’s ac-count as reimbursement for overpayment collected on their telephone account,” said Thokozani Mvelase, Telkom group executive for enterprise risk management.
The customer is then requested by the fraudsters to transfer the amount into a bank account that is allegedly under Telkom’s name. The transaction usually occurs before the cheque is cleared by the bank.
“The customer’s account is fraudulent-ly debited with the cheque amount while the initial cheque deposit is declined by the bank. The fraudsters then withdraw the cash from the ‘Telkom’ account, leav-
ing the customer without the value of the initial cheque deposit amount,” Mvelase explained. Residents and Telkom custom-ers are urged to be alert and to do the fol-lowing should they receive an unknown or Telkom cheque deposit in their bank account:
- Phone the nearest Telkom Customer Service Branch and confi rm whether there was indeed a cheque issued regarding an overpayment
- Ask to see a Telkom ID card from a person delivering the letter if it is deliv-ered in person. If one is shown, record the card details
- Attempt to record the type, make and registration number of the vehicle that the person delivering the letter arrives in.
- Inform Telkom’s hotline on 0800-124-000.
“It is important that customers re-member that Telkom passes credits on telephone accounts if the need arises and does not refund through deposits into cus-tomers’ bank accounts,” Mvelase said.

Cyclists and pedestrians in the capital city will soon have their own lanes, as the Tshwane metro will embark on a big inner city rejuvenation project, the metro said.
The metro council developed a Non-Motorist Transport (NMT) master plan and implementation plan in 2010 that will guide development plans in the city as well as promote cycling and walking as part of its transport plan.
“Our rejuvenation project, called Opera-tion Reclaim, includes the development of facilities and infrastructure to create a cyclist and pedestrian friendly environ-ment and to give preference to them,” said spokesperson Selby Bokaba.
A 17-year-old deputy head boy of
Hoërskool Pretoria-Noord, Rudi Lettau, tragically lost his life earlier this month when he was hit by a car while cycling in his neighbourhood.
This incident is, however, just one of many fatal cycling accidents that have recently occurred in the city.
According to the metro, four fatalities have occurred out of a total of 283 cyclist accidents between 1 February 2013 and 31 March 2014.
“The council is committed to cater to the needs of non-motorist traffi c.
It is also part of the council’s longer term, Tshwane Vision 2055.
The implementation of cycle lanes is ongoing and money have been requested to construct pedestrian and cycle paths in various areas of the city,” said Bokaba.

There are many bad stories doing the rounds about our education system, but when one school in our backyard is rec-ognised as a beacon of hope, it is worth taking notice. (This article was originally written by Brenda Hlungwani and appeared in Record Noweto).
Dr Fani Sibulela, the headmaster of Khensani Primary School in Soshanguve Block H since 1999, was recently honoured with a national award of excellence in primary school leadership.
He achieved this by, among others, part-nering with overseas schools, and was the winner on a district, provincial and national level. Prior to his leadership, Khensani Pri-mary was a poor-performing school on the verge of closing down, but he managed to turn things around and it is now an award-winning school.
This is not the fi rst time Sibulela has been honoured for his achievements. In 2007, he took the top position at national
level in the same category. This earned him news coverage from
local and national media. But the road to success was not without
its challenges. “When I arrived here, I had only 252
pupils and seven teachers, including my-self. There was burglary, theft and vandal-ism, and we had to work in dilapidated classrooms. Chalkboards were in such a bad condition that writing on them was pointless and the toilets were not in good order.”
He said that the lack of parental involve-ment was the main issue. “When I called them for a meeting, they did not respond. They did not have any hope anymore to support the school. Then I started with plans to turn things around because I fi rmly believe that nothing yields better results than learning in a safe and clean environ-ment.”
To achieve this, he started planting trees around the school to beautify it, and repainted and renovated it because it was an old school built in 1974.
The principal’s motto, known to all his pupils, is 'Mind your space'.
By this, they know that he means to check that the environment around you is
clean.With regard to partnerships, the princi-
pal explained that a lot of money had been pumped into the school’s development.
“Over and above this, one has to in-crease the quality of teaching in the class-rooms. So I started forming partnerships locally with schools in Mountain View, Sinoville and Gezina, and internationally with schools in Manchester and Birming-ham in Britain,” said Dr Sibulela.
These partnerships, which were es-tablished more than ten years ago, have helped Khensani tremendously.
“People mistake Khensani for a rich school, but actually it is because of how we look at marketing ourselves. Research is the key, you can’t just sit and wait for the department to do things for you. You have to take the initiative. The department will meet you halfway,” he said.
His efforts have resulted in a phenom-enal pass rate of 96.8% and a total of 1 264 pupils enrolled at the school.
“That is growth of more than 80% from the time I took up leadership of the school. Currently, I manage 28 teachers. We have eliminated vandalism, and we have proper furniture from the overseas sponsors,” said the proud principal.

An Honours graduate who is about to com-plete his masters degree is currently home-less after not being able to fi nd employment for the past seven years. South Africa’s un-employment rate reached a staggering 25% in 2013, leaving millions without an income, including Imraan Abrahams. Abrahams, who has an Honours degree in industrial psychol-ogy from the University of Port Elizabeth, is currently busy with his Masters degree in industrial psychology and has completed various other diplomas, including a diploma at the American Institute of Polygraph.
Despite his qualifi cations, Abrahams has been unable to fi nd a job in his fi eld. Since being retrenched in 2007 from his previ-ous job, where he worked for nine years as a human resource specialist, he has been unable to fi nd employment in East London. He moved to Pretoria in 2009 hoping to fi nd employment. Ever since his move, Abra-hams has applied for numerous job opportu-nities, but all to no avail.
“I have applied and e-mailed my CV to thousands of companies. I rarely get feedback from any of them,” Abrahams said. Due to not being able to fi nd full-time employment, Abrahams is unable to pay his bills, including rent. He has been living on the couch of a family member since his move to Pretoria and is struggling to stay afl oat.
“I know it is hard to fi nd a job in this country and being a certain race or sex is an obstacle, but this is ridiculous. It is unaccep-table not to be able to fi nd employment for this long due to economic empowerment.” Abrahams, who is also a father, is currently making ends meet by doing various odd jobs, but he said it was not enough to get by.
“This struggle has made me very de-spondent and sometimes I do not even want to wake up in the mornings. But I cannot allow this to defi ne me, I will continue to apply.” He said it broke his heart that he could not give his son the life he deserved. When asked whether unemployment was a problem in Pretoria, Dr Danie Brink, CEO of Solidariteit Helpende Hand, said that with the national unemployment rate, there was no doubt that Pretoria also had a substantial population of unemployed. Brink added that the unemployment rate went hand in hand with poverty and emotional distress.
“People who are unemployed are at a massive disadvantage because they do not have the money to make important decisions. The emotional impact of being unemployed includes feeling useless, and goes together with low self-esteem and de-pression.” He added that Helpende Hand had various programmes and projects to fi ght poverty and unemployment.
Brink said the organisation has given more than R16 million to students to further their studies.

An animal rescue organisation in Murray Hill in the north of Pretoria has 90 days to raise the money needed to buy their property, or it will be sold to someone else, forcing them to move. Animal Ambulance, a registered non-profi t organisation that takes in sick and abused animals, exists entirely on donations from individuals and moneyraising events, and is a pro-life shelter.
“I have been in the animal rescue busi-ness for 12 years. My daughter shares my passion, and I know that she will continue to help Pretoria’s injured and abused animals when I’m no longer around, but we need to secure the plot to make this happen,” Marie Conradie, founder of the organisation, said. She explained that having to move would be extremely traumatic for the animals they take in, because they are in a fragile condition.
“I have a very strict adoption policy, one of my main stipulations is that all animals rehomed by us sleep indoors and are treated like family pets or children. They’ve gone through enough trauma and abuse, they need to be loved.”
Their animals are well looked after,
and they encourage all animal lovers to book a day to visit them and help out with grooming and feeding. Jamie, a dog Con-radie described as ‘near death’ when they received him, has become somewhat of a celebrity after his phenomenal recovery at the shelter. He is just one of the many animals that need a good, loving home.
Local businesses and residents have joined in the fi ght to save this shelter by donating their goods, services and money to the cause. Artists have auctioned off their work, a local supporter offered a set of gel nails and even a tattoo artist offered to donate a portion of the profi t to the organisation. Conradie sells various handcrafts at markets, and they have a number of competitions and giveaways on SMS donations running to help raise the money needed to save the plot, but they need more help.
“It’s always an emotional experience for me when we take in another abused or neglected baby, but knowing I’m doing something to help makes it a little better,” she said. Smoother gearshifts, improved effi ciency and a more involved driving experience are the key advantages of a new, advanced gearbox developed by Suzuki.
The new transmission combines the best attributes of manual-shift and auto-matic gearboxes by integrating an electro-hydraulic actuator with a fi ve-speed manual gearbox.
The actuator operates the clutch and the gear shifts, and perfectly synchronises these actions with the engine’s revs to ensure seamless, optimised gear changes.
The innovative gearbox combines the ac-tuator and controller, and mounts it directly onto the manual transmission.
Since the gearbox remains a manual unit, it doesn’t suffer the effi ciency losses usually associated with torque converter-based auto-matic transmissions.
Suzuki engineers say the automated gearbox offers exceptional ease of use, as it obviates the need for clutch and gearshift operation, while a creep function when pull-ing off makes for smooth acceleration from rest. The gearbox offers both fully automatic and manual shift modes.
In the auto setting, the gearbox selects and shifts gears without the need for driver intervention, based on prevailing speeds and load conditions. However, selecting manual mode gives the driver full control over gear shift selection, just like a conventional manual gearbox, but without the need for a clutch, thus ensuring an engaging driving experience. The advanced gearbox has al-ready undergone comprehensive testing and is expected to be implemented in some of Suzuki’s compact passenger cars, including the Swift and the Alto, in the future.

The S3 Sportback will only be available in S Tronic transmission in South Africa.

The real estate industry generally reacted positively when Reserve Bank Governor Gill Marcus announced after a recent meet-ing of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) that there would be no change in the repo rate or other interest rates. There had been concerns following a 0.5 percentage point repo rate increase in January that every meeting of the MPC this year would bring a further increase, albeit slight, as the commit-tee struggled to keep infl ation below its 6% target.
“However, it seems that at this meet-ing, the MPC gave more weight to the risks inherent in slowing economic growth and declining business confi dence than to those from the rising food and transport costs that are currently the main infl ation culprits,”

While there are many options for retire-ment buyers to choose from, such as a house in the countryside or along the coast, investing in a purpose-built retire-ment complex or village in the Gauteng region of South Africa is also becoming increasingly popular. Tony Ketcher, a Seeff licensee, said that Seeff has seen a signifi -cant increase in the number of retirement facilities available within Gauteng over the past three years.

Building of this development will commence soon and phases 2, 3 and 4 will cost R640 000 a unit each.

“It consequently decided to leave the repo rate at 5.5% and the prime rate at 9%, giving consumers a breathing space to prepare for the interest rate increases that are defi nitely on the cards over the next 12 months.”
The effect of this for existing home-owners, he said, is that minimum monthly bond instalments remain unchanged – and there is a further chance now to lower the capital portion of home loan accounts and reduce the effects of any future interest rate increases. “It does seem, though, as if those who were considering fi xing their bond rates may have missed the boat. The banks do not give out information about fi xed rates, as they determine these on an individual basis, but it is very unlikely now that bor-rowers will be able to get a fi xed rate of less than 2 or 3 percentage points above prime. Since most commentators do not expect the current round of interest rate increases to go beyond a prime of 11% over the next 24 months, a premium of 2 or 3 percentage points (equivalent to an extra R1 325 to R2 000 a month on a R1 million home loan) seems a high price to pay for certainty about your bond repayments.”

veiligheidskomplekse en landgoedere met hul eie noodkragopwekkers en waterbronne wat ingevolge die nuwe riglyne vir ener-giedoeltreffendheid ontwerp is, gaan heel waarskynlik baie gesog word, sê hy, maar kopers sal ook bereid wees om ’n premie te betaal vir gewone voorstedelike huise wat met ‘groen’ toerusting spog.

Rental market is lively in the east of PretoriaDemand for rental units in secure complexes in Pretoria’s eastern suburbs is growing ex-ponentially among the younger crowd, who are looking for stylish accommodation while saving up to buy their own homes.
Townhouses in complexes are also being targeted by consumers with young families, who hope to upgrade to homes of their own soon, said Goran Despot of the RealNet Erasmuskloof franchise.
“Available rental units are being absorbed very quickly, with the greatest demand cur-rently in the R7 000 to R8 500 per month range. Luckily, this price category now represents 90% of all rental properties in the local market. There is also steady demand
for upmarket sectional title units with three bedrooms and two bathrooms at rentals of up to R12 000 per month and full-title homes with three or four bedrooms at rentals of R10 000 to R15 000 a month.”
Despot said the rental department’s port-folio has grown in leaps and bounds, with a total of 70 properties currently on the books and a steady stream of landlords enquiring about listing their units with the agency.
“An increasing number of the units in our portfolio belong to owners who have approached us to take over existing leases and manage their properties on their behalf,” he said. “Many have had enough of manag-ing tenants and rental units on their own
and now prefer a hands-off approach. We offer an internet-based system for automated monthly rental payments to landlords and also do quarterly property inspections to make sure that units are properly main-tained. Minor repairs can be done on the spot during inspections, subject to owners’ approval, while more extensive repairs are reported to landlords and we have a panel of experts who can attend to these on landlords’ instructions,” he explained. Meanwhile, he noted that interest in the buy-to-let-market has picked up recently on the back of increasing demand. Hot investments at the moment are smaller units, since they yield higher returns.

Die gewese Oostelikes-rugbyklub (1942-1997) en ander sportklubs van die destydse Oudstudente Sport-unie hou op 10 Mei 2014 ’n reünie by oud-Springbok Willie Kahts se Bosveldlapa langs Hoërskool Lan-genhoven.
Die reünie begin om 12:00 die dag en dit sal saam met die Blou Bulle se wedstryd teen die Storm-ers val, wat later dieselfde dag op Loftus Versfeld plaasvind.
Die destydse Oostelikes was algemeen bekend as Die Uile, vanweë die afbeelding van ’n uil op hul sakwapen. Die oorspronklike Blou Bul, Louis Schmidt, was die klub se eerste Springbok. Daarna het ander Springbokke soos Corra Dirksen, Gys Pitzer en Willie Kahts
gevolg. Etlike ander Springbokke en provinsiale spelers het ook vir die klub gespeel.
Die sportklubs wat deel was van die Oudstudente Sportunie het òf as Oostelikes òf as Oudstudente aan die Noord-Transvaalse ligas deelgeneem. Die rugbyklub het in 1964 (saam met Weermag) en weer in 1965 die gesogte Carltonbeker gewen, terwyl die krieketklub jare lank die superliga van die Noord-Transvaal Krieketunie oorheers het. ’n Sterbelaaide atletiekklub uit die geledere van die Oudstudente Sport-unie het op sy dag ook die gesogte De Loorskild gewen. Die sportunie se bofbalklub was die naaswenners op die SA klubkampioenskap, die korfbalklub was eens die Transvaal
kampioen, terwyl die vrouehokkie-, pluimbal- en ringtennisklubs almal by geleentheid die senior ligas in die destydse provinsiale verenigings gewen het. Daar was deur die jare ook klubs vir gholf, rolbal, tennis, netbal, sagtebal, stoei, manshokkie, posduiwe en veerpyltjies.
Die Oostelikes Sportunie het uitmekaar gespat toe die klub einde 1994 sy terrein in Prinshof aan die Nasionale Diertuin moes afstaan, maar verskeie van die klubs bestaan vandag nog onder ander name voort.

Toe Johann Rossouw op 23 April 1988 die vinnigste Suid-Afrikaner ooit geword het met ’n Suid-Afrikaanse rekord van 10,06 in die 100m, het Simon Magakwe nog in doeke ron-dgewaggel in ’n township naby Lichtenburg. Rossouw se rekord is opgestel presies 21 dae voor Magakwe se tweede verjaardag.
Baie naellopers het die afgelope 26 jaar naby gekom, maar Rossouw se rekord én die magiese 10 sekondes grens was nie een van hulle beskore nie.
Selfs Magakwe moes lank wag om die eerste Suid-Afrikaner te word wat dié pres-tasie kon behaal. Hy het Saterdag sy sesde nasionale senior titel in die 100m vir mans gewen, maar hoewel hy in die verlede baie naby gekom het, moes Magakwe wag tot hy byna 28 jaar oud is voor hy sy naam op hierdie manier in die geskiedenisboeke kon verewig. geslaag om Rossouw se rekord te breek toe hy in die 100m eindstryd tweede geëindig het met ’n tyd van 10,02 sekondes. Sy prestasie sal egter nie maklik die erkenning kry wat dit verdien nie, omdat al die aandag op Magakwe se historiese mylpaal sal wees.
Behalwe vir die prestasies van hierdie twee naellopers, het die Suid-Afrikaanse
kampioenskap ook weer bewys dat Pretoria steeds die grootste bydrae tot Suid-Afrika se atletiekspens lewer. Atletiek Gauteng-Noord (AGN) het 18 nasionale titels by dié kam-pioenskap verower.
Onder hierdie titels staan die jong Tukkie-atleet, Rikenette Steenkamp, se blitsige 13,17 sekondes in die 100m hekkies vir vroue uit.
Dit is slegs 0,23 sekondes stadiger as Corien Botha se 16-jaar-oue Suid-Afrikaanse rekord. Beide die mans- en vroue spanne van AGN het die afl ositems ook oorheers deur die 4x400m en 4x100m items te wen. By al die hoogtepunte het die byeenkoms ongelukkig ook ’n negatiewe noot gehad toe die onbe-holpenheid van beamptes veroorsaak het dat die 400 hekkies item vir mans ontsier is. Een van die stelle hekkies is te hoog gestel en dit het ’n invloed op die uitslag van die wedloop gehad toe die ge wese Olimpiese medaljewen-ner en nasionale rekordhouer in dié item, LJ van Zyl, sy ritme daardeur verloor het. Hy het toe tweede ge -kom, terwyl sy oefenmaat by Tukkies, Cornel Fredericks, hom met 0,79 sekondes geklop het.
Dit is nie die eerste keer dat so-iets by ’n atletiekbyeenkoms in Suid-Afrika gebeur nie en ernstige vrae kan oor die opleiding en ge-halte van beamptes gevra word oor dié aspek.
