from the creator

ForewordFirst of all, thank you for choosing the Vitus Audio RP-102 Phonostage, we are sure you will enjoy it for many years to come. When purchasing a Vitus Audio product, you are guaranteed a musical performance, which exceeds the current musical standards. Vitus Audio is dedicated to musical performance rather than technical details and high performance measures. We believe that many manufactures are blinded by the current available theory, instead of looking for new answers.

At Vitus Audio everything works until proven not to. This way we always try to push the limits and explore the unexplored. As a result of this, many of the solutions we use today are considered to be “impossible to ever get working”, however they have convinced many people and reviewers world wide of the opposite. Before any of our new topologies are implemented in our products, they are carefully reviewed by our dedicated listening panel. This way we can guarantee the correct level of musically performance and robustness.

Generally we’re after super neutral, super detailed and super dynamic reproduction without “loosing” the nerve in the music which often is a drawback of many high end amplifiers. Our real strongholds are complete silence, unbelievable depth and width in the soundstage resulting in a far more open sound with higher resolution -you could say, closer to the artist. As a result of the above, our amps do not “focus” on any specific frequencies - i.e. no extension of top or bass, which of course results in high clarity of the midrange since it’s “naturally present”!

introduction

About this manual

This is your RP-102 owner’s manual. The following pages will describe, as clearly as possible, how to get your RP-102 operating fast and simple. Although some operations are self-explanatory, we strongly suggest you read this manual to avoid any damage to the unit. The manual is designed to be helpful. If there are points you feel we could cover better, or that we have missed out – please tell us.

Important information is presented like

this. Ignoring this information may cause damage to you or the unit. Damage caused to the unit by ignoring this information might invalidate the warranty.

Introduction to the Reference SeriesThe Vitus Audio Reference Series is a true high-end series of products, which is build on our true dedication to neutral music reproduction. 1. getting started

About the RP-102The new RP-102 is the successor of the RP-100. The powersupply of the RP-102 is based on the technology developed for out Signature and Masterpiece Series, and it offers supperior performance over any battery driven power supply.

Cartridge loading is set directly from the front of the phonostage - or by a MAC remote which can be purchased seperately. The RP-102 offers direct switchable impedances from 40 Ohm to 47 kOhm without having to access the rear panel or to open the phonostage for making hardware changes.

The RP-102 is equipped with both RCA and XLR inputs and outputs for optimal compatability with any system configuration.

External interferenceIt is important to remember that all equipment which is connected to the mains is a potential source of hum and interference and may radiate both electrostatic or electromagnetic radiation. In addition, the mains will also act as a carrier for many forms of RF interference generated by electric motors, air-conditioning units, thyristor light dimmers etc. Unless the earth system is clean, all attempts to improve hum noise levels will be futile. In extreme cases there will be no alternative but to provide a completely separate and independent `technical earth' to replace the incoming 'noisy earth'. However, always consult your local electricity supply authority to ensure that safety regulations are not being infringed.

4. operation & service

Safety noticeThe Vitus Audio RP-102 contains no user serviceable parts except from the mains fuse. Do not attempt to open the case. There are potentially dangerous voltages present inside. Should your RP-102 show signs of malfunction, then please contact your dealer or Vitus Audio.

Mains supply voltageAny unit may be set for operation in 100V, 115V or 230V A.C. Units are shipped set for the mains supply voltage according to the destination. The voltage setting can be updated later by your dealer, if necessary.

MaintenanceVitus Audio products are designed to run for many years without the need for regular maintenance. Our products contain no user serviceable parts except from the mains fuse. Should your RP-102 show signs of malfunction, please contact your dealer or Vitus Audio.

Mains fusesThe mains fuses are accessible from the outside of the amplifier. You will find the mains fuses just below the power inlet. If the fuses blow, then you can easily replace them. The fuses only blow on the occurrence of power surges or if there is a fault in the unit. Normally power surges cause no other damage other than blowing the fuses. When the fuses blow repeatedly on replacement, then the unit most likely has a malfunction. In case of malfunction the unit must be returned to Vitus Audio for repair.

Example 1 Setting the cartridge load (MM/MC) and load impedanceBy default the RP-102 is set to MM with a load impedance of 40 Ω.

In the example we will change the settings of the RP-102 to match the Cadenza Blue from Ortofon. This is a MC pickup with a load impedance of 50-200 Ω.

The settings for MC and MM are determined by the gain level with 51dB being the changing point. From 27dB to 51dB is MM mode, and from 51dB to 75dB is MC mode.

Start by turning the gain up to above 51dB to go into MC mode. This is done by clicking the top button on the right front panel or clicking up on the MAC remote.
