Goodbye and Good Luck Year 6

Once again I find it hard to believe that

this is the last week of the school year

and the final week in Willington Primary

for Year 6! With the changes to the

curriculum and the much harder tests,

this academic year has certainly been

challenging for both staff and pupils.

However, our Year 6 children certainly

rose to the occasion and the progress

they have all made has been remarkable.

Under the expert guidance of Miss Jones

and Mrs Jacob, Year 6 have become an

    extremely effective group of mature,

    responsible, self-confident and

hardworking young people who are a real credit to our school. Throughout this

year they have set an excellent example for the rest of the children, showing real pride in their school

and in their learning. They have exceeded my expectations with their attainment and shown that they

have the skills and qualities to be very successful as they move to secondary school.

  • Staff Changes!

Page 2 The Willington Primary Gazette

In July we welcomed back Miss Kenny and Mrs Harker following their periods of maternity leave. Mrs

Wilkinson will leave our school this week to take up a new post at Burnhope Primary and Miss Kenny

will slot back into Year 1 in September. However, Miss Kenny will change into Mrs Wallace as she is

getting married in August. We hope she has a fantastic day and look forward to seeing the photos! We

wish Mrs Wilkinson well for the future and thank her for the super job she has done with our Year 1

pupils – particularly the outstanding phonic test results!

Mrs Heslop will also leave us in July after teaching Year 5 during 2015/16. Mrs Heslop’s role enabled

Miss Fenn to be released from class to take on the role of deputy head in Mrs Harker’s absence. Mrs

Heslop has certainly put in the hours getting to grips with the challenges of Year 5 and is one of only

two members of staff with a 100% attendance record! We thank her for the contribution she has made

to our school and wish her well for the future.

Miss Fenn has done a fantastic job as acting deputy during Mrs Harker’s absence and we are very

grateful for the effort and dedication she has applied to the role, ensuring our school has continued to

push forward. Our new Year 5 class in September will benefit from her outstanding teaching skills.

Mrs Harker will return to her position of deputy head in September and we look forward to her

expertise further developing teaching and learning throughout the school.

Last but certainly not least, I come to Mrs Melville. She

is leaving our school office to take up a new and

exciting challenge. I know she be a real asset in her

new position just as she has been for us, here at

Willington Primary. We wish her well for the future

and thank her for the dedication she has shown to our

    school.

    Summer Fun at the Fayre!

A fun time was had by all (apart from Mr Littlefair who

volunteered to be in the stocks for the afternoon) who joined

us at our Summer Fayre on 8th July. There were fairground

rides, games, stalls, raffles, face painting and a fire engine to

explore to name a few! As always on these occasions we had

an excellent turn out and we would like to thank you all for

helping us raise a huge £1,046 for extra curricular activities in

school. A special thank you goes to our hardworking and

creative ‘Friends of the School’ and staff who organise such

    wonderful events.

Mrs Wilkinson Mrs Heslop Mrs Melville

Congratulations to the following children who

have achieved 100% attendance throughout the

school year. They are:- Rebecca Christie, Laura

Smith, Ebony Abbott, Daniel Archer, Robbie Lambe,

Cameron Abbott, Darcy Bond, Gemma Clarkson,

Liam Lincoln, Amy Davison, Harrison Davison, Caden

Kidd, Adam Graves, Charlie Spooner, Mia Walton,

Holly Blenkiron, Olivia Clarkson, Alesha Colley,

Niamh Patterson and Lucy Pickering. Well done

and keep up the good work!

    Attendance Matters!

Parents and carers joined us for our reception class Graduation

Ceremony last week to celebrate their hard work and achievements

throughout their first year in primary school. The children sang a

wonderful rendition of ‘One more step along the world I go’ looking

    very smart in their mortarboards.

Parents and carers watched an emotional slideshow of the class

throughout the year followed by party food in the classroom.

Miss McCartney, Mrs Allison and Mrs Patterson were extremely

proud of the children. Miss McCartney said “It was a successful end

to a wonderful year, good luck in year 1!”

    The children were

    enthralled and Parkside

    staff were suitably

    impressed with their

    existing knowledge of

    the subject.

In their spring topic on World War II, year 6

were particularly interested in Anne Frank- a

young girl who wrote a diary which

documents her life in hiding during the

German occupation. They were so inspired a

couple of children even dressed up as her on World Book Day. This month they were lucky

enough to be invited to an Anne Frank

    exhibition at Parkside School.
