You would have noticed that all our students have been given some awesome Kids Can wet weather gear
from the Warriors. It is important that our students come to school warm and prepared for the weather to
turn bad as it has been doing over recent weeks. It is a timely reminder that we need to ensure our
students are safe coming to and going home from school. On Wednesday this week we had a student’s
foot run over by a car as he was walking across the pedestrian crossing in front of the shops on Saint
Leonards Road. While we reported this incident to the police it is important that we are all collectively
looking after our students, on rainy and wet days things can get hectic on our roads around school and
people lose their patience, please be considerate when picking up your child and remember that our goal
is for everyone to get home safely and happy.
Just a reminder that our Whanau/Fono hui is next Monday and is for everyone to attend, all families are
welcomed as we look forward to hearing your thoughts on a few things we would like to discuss with you.
We will be going through a number of significant developments over the next few years and we would like
your input into what will be happening in our school. Tea, Coffee, Milo and light refreshments provided.
Reminders: What: Whanau Engagement Hui When: 8th of June Where: Kelston Intermediate School Hall 6-7pm.

Talofa, I hope you all enjoyed the first TOPS assembly for 2015. It was good to see students engaged and also to see students participating in the assembly. Some of the teachers and students were blown away by how much effort some of the students put in to perform or present their items or displays. We were very happy to see the unique performances. Also we had a long weekend because it was the Queen’s birthday. I hope you all enjoyed your long weekend. Stay safe and have a good week & GO THE MAROONS.

Term 1 Learning in the Chop Shop this term was focused around exploring how the wind works. We did this by investigating how kites have evolved in different cultures. Students researched where kites have come from, the materials they are constructed with and how various cultures have used them. We began the construction stage where student’s ideas are being built however, due to time constraints we have had postpone completion to term 4.
3D PRINTING
This year we have been coming to grips with our new 3D printer. Using the online programme Tinkercad.com. We have developed our understanding while designing and building items such as class passes, name tags, phone cases and window winders. Due to the extensive build time required only select groups like TOPS have used this technology so far however this will increase as this new type of equipment becomes the norm.

Term 2 In the Chop Shop this term we have been investigating the issue of affordable housing. We debated whether a home is a right or a privilege and how that is show in New Zealand and around the world. Students learnt about key ingredients that make up a house before exploring their own related questions. We then designed affordable houses using floorplanner.com before moving back to the Chop Shop to convert our 2D designs into 3D models.
The number one benefit of information technology is that it empowers people to do what they want to do. It lets people be creative. It lets people be productive. It lets people learn things they didn't think they could learn before, and so in a sense it is all about potential.
