WOODSIDE PRIMARY SCHOOL

Uniform

Objectives

• Strengthen children’s connections with peers and

the school

• Ensure the school has a positive image in the com-

munity

• Ensure equity amongst students regardless of fami-

ly background

• Strengthen discipline and respect for themselves

• Ensure children have appropriate attire to fully participate in all school

activities.

Expectations.

1. Uniforms must be purchased through the school (except school dress) Order

forms are available at the office.

2. Uniform has been set by school council as compulsory.

3. Children will not be allowed leave the school for excursions unless in full

school uniform.

4. If the child is not in uniform when leaving the school they will be supplied with items for that day.

5. Parents are requested to label all uniform items.

6. Lost, unnamed uniform items are kept in a bin in the interview room.

Uniform

School logo SunSmart hats are supplied by the school for Terms One and Four

Beanies may only be worn before and after school.

Leggings must not be worn. Footwear must be enclosed shoes. Crocs or skate

shoes are not allowed.

Homework

Objectives

• To develop students’ responsibility and independence

• To involve parents in their child’s learning

• To enhance communication between school and home

• To provide opportunities for children to consolidate skills

• To develop a homework routine in preparation for secondary school

Expectations

1. Reading is a fundamental component of homework at all levels. Children are

encouraged to incorporate reading into part of their daily routines.

2. At the beginning of each year teachers will outline appropriate homework

expectations.

3. These will be published in the newsletter and on the school website.

4. Students in Years Two through to Six are responsible for having their reading

diary signed each night.

5. Students taking holidays during term time are encouraged to continue their

reading and write about their experiences. Extra work will not be set by

teachers.

6. Students in Years Two to Six who have not completed homework or met the

reading expectations will complete it at school during their play time.

Participation in Incursions and Excursions

Objectives

• To strengthen children’s connections with their school and their peers

• To develop a sense of civic responsibility

• To broaden children’s experiences both sporting and cultural

• To strengthen discipline and respect for themselves

Expectations

1. All children attend excursions their year level is involved in.

2. All children in Years Three to Six will participate in inter school athletics,

cricket and cross country.

3. All children selected to represent the district at zone level are expected to

attend.

4. All children are expected to participate in incursions such as special days, e.g.

Bad Hair Day.

5. As part of the Senior Leadership Program, students agree to participate in all events (see Leadership Expectations).

Attendance

Objectives

• To maximise children’s out-

Expectations

1. As set out in the school’s current Strategic Plan, the expectation is that

children have an attendance of at least 95%

2. Should a child be absent, a phone call before school begins is appreciated.

3. Departmental expectations are that a note explaining the reason for absence be

sent with the child on their return to school.

4. It is not expected that children take time off for birthdays, shopping etc.

5. The whole school has Literacy timetabled between 9am and 11am and

Numeracy between 11.30am and 12.45pm. These subjects are seen as the

essential components of the day. Should a child be overly tired due to family

activities, they are expected to attend for these hours then be taken home at

12.45pm to rest.

6. Families who have to travel for medical appointments are asked to take half a

day off.

7. Staff are expected to contact the family on the second successive day of

absence.

8. The Department of Education and Early Childhood Development does not

send children home if the weather is extreme. All classrooms are

air-conditioned. Children will be kept inside if the temperature is above 35

degrees.

Instrumental Program

Objectives

• To give all Year 4, 5.and 6 students the opportunity to learn an instrument

• To make this program accessible for all students

Expectations

1. While this program is primarily for students in Years 4, 5 and 6 there may be

occasions where younger students enter the program

2. Fees are to be paid by the second week of the term unless alternate

arrangements are made with the Principal.

3. Fees are paid to the school.

4. Participants are to practice at least 15 min a night, four times a week.

5. Students, once sufficient proficiency is attained, may join the Rock Band.

NB Fees are set at $65 a term. This covers approximately 25% of the program. The

balance is subsidised by the school.

Managing Parent Queries and Complaints

At times parents may have concerns they wish to take up with the school. Woodside Primary School welcomes this feedback and encourages parents to raise issues so they can be dealt with speedily and resolved to the satisfaction of all concerned.

The following procedure should assist parents in handling such concerns:

1.Raise the matter with the school via telephone, a diary/reading diary entry or written communication, remembering that you have one side of an issue, others may have another side.

2.Arrange to speak with the Principal and Classroom Teacher. After the meeting the parents may need to:

• Be prepared to monitor the situation with follow up phone calls or meetings • Be available for further discussions with appropriate people at school.

Consider involving the support of outside agencies such as Guidance Officers or Social Workers. This can also be arranged through the school.

If the matter is still unresolved you may seek advice from the South-Eastern Victoria Regional Office (Phone 8765 5600). The role of the Region is to provide additional advice, support and feedback to the school in seeking a positive solution. All issues and complaints must ultimately be resolved at the school level and the Principal is the key person in seeking satisfactory outcome. We are committed to seeking a resolution to all concerns sensitively and with commitment to listening and responding to all your concerns.

Expectations

1. While staff makes every effort to listen to concerns or queries it is not possible for this to occur at all times.

2. The Principal has a significant teaching role therefore cannot leave the class to speak to parents in person or over the phone.

3. The office is only staffed three days a week. If the Principal is teaching, a designated senior student will answer the phone and take messages.

4. Teachers are not to leave their class to speak to parents. 5. Staff welcome discussion with parents before 8.30am and after school.

Supervision of eating

Objectives

• To give all children the opportunity to eat

• To assist children in having sufficient nutrition to learn and play

• To encourage families to provide healthy lunches

• To strengthen discipline and respect for themselves

Expectations

1. That all children eat both play lunch and lunch in the designated eating area.

2. A staff member is timetabled to supervise eating.

3. Children may move off when they choose at playtime.

4. All children remain in the eating area between 12.45pm and 1.00pm.

5. Children may only eat the lunch provided by their family.

6. Children are encouraged to eat all their lunch and may be kept back to finish

if not finished by 1.00pm.

7. Families are encouraged to provide healthy lunches.

School lunch Orders

Each Friday our Parents and Friends club supply hot lunches for the children.

Lunch can be ordered via the Skoolbag App or by submitting a lunch order slip

(available at the office) by Wednesday each week.

Payment must be submitted before any lunch orders are processed, especially for

orders received via the Skoolbag App.

Parents and Friends have a roster for helper and encourage new parents to con-

tribute. If you have a spare hour on a Friday and would like to assist please con-

tact the office.

Corn on the Cob

Leadership program

Objectives

• To prepare children to become active citizens in their school and community.

• To develop leadership skills in all students.

• To give all students the opportunity to take on a leadership role.

• To give children a voice in the running of the school and raise any concerns

they have.

Expectations

1. All children aspiring to leadership in Years Five and Six must have a

Leadership Contract signed by their parents and themselves.

2. All children aspiring to be leaders must make, where possible, a speech

outlining “why they should be a leader”, to the school community.

3. Term Captains will meet regularly with a leadership teacher to discuss issues

as they may arise and organise activities for the whole school.

Assemblies

Objectives

• To celebrate learning and appropriate behaviour.

• To share these celebrations with the wider community.

• To encourage positive behaviours.

• To allow children to make stronger connections with their school and peers.

Expectations

1. Patriotic Assembly takes place each Monday morning. The National Anthem

is sung and the Woodside Promise recited. An outline of the coming week is

discussed.

2. This takes place at 9.00 am, parents are welcome to attend.

3. Awards Assemblies take place each Friday at 3.05 pm.

4. A variety of awards are given for class work and playground behaviour.

These awards are not necessarily for ‘clever’ students but children who have

made a great effort.

5. Parents and community members are encouraged to attend these assemblies.

Personal Belongings

In accordance with the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development,

the school does not take any responsibility for personal belongings brought to school.

The school will not replace or pay for lost or damaged items.

Mobile Devices* Policy continued

Implementation School council endorse the policy The school community be informed of the policy regarding mobile phones.

Policy That devices* are not permitted at school. Devices are not permitted on buses.

Should students require them after getting off the bus at home they will be handed in at the office on arrival at school and be handed back on departure from school.

In the case of emergencies, or parents needing to contact their children during the day communication, will go through the school phone.

Devices* are not permitted on camps or excursions. Supervising teachers will have mobile phones with contact numbers provided through the school.

Devices* found in possession of students in school grounds or while on camps or excursions will be confiscated and held by staff until it can be collected by their parents/guardians.

Special Days

Objectives

• To develop students’ connectedness with their school and peers

• To enhance leadership skill in students

• To develop citizenship in students through an awareness of various charities

Expectations

1. To be planned by the Term Captains in conjunction with the Leadership

Teacher.

2. Notification of these days and student expectations to be two weeks prior.

3. All children to attend and join in all activities.

4. Any donations to be voluntary, ie, students do not have to donate to

participate.

5. There to be one theme day per term where children are required to dress up.

Skoolbag App

We are asking parents to install our Skoolbag App. The App can be used to read

newsletters, submit permission notes, submit hot lunch orders (lunch orders must be

paid for before we can process them), submit absentee forms, change details, receive

reminders and notifications.

How to install Skoolbag on your smartphone

For iPhone and iPad users:

1. Click the “App Store” icon on your Apple device.

2. Type Woodside Primary School in the search.

3. You will see our school logo appear, click “Get” then “Install”.

4. The app is FREE to download.

5. When installed click “Open”.

6. Select “OK” to receive push notifications, when asked.

7. Click the “More’ button on the bottom right of the App, then “Setup”.

8. Toggle on the Push Categories that are applicable to you by tapping the on/off

switch.

For Android users:

You must first have signed up with a Google Account before installing the app.

1. Click the “Play Store” button on your Android Device.

2. Click the magnifying glass icon at the top and type in Woodside Primary School.

3. Click the name when it appears in the search.

4. Click the “Install” button.

5. Click “Accept” for various permission (please note, we do not modify any of

your personal data on your device).

6. Click “Open” when installed.

7. Click the “More” button on the bottom right of the App, then “Setup”.

8. Toggle on the Push Categories that are applicable for you by tapping the on/off

switch.

Please Note: Some brands of Android phones need the setting in “Notification Man-

ager” changed to “Allow” instead of “Notify” in order for push notification to work.

The phone must also be running at least version 4 system software to run the app.
