November 2016 saw a change of reporting for the UK Pensions Department, which you can learn more about on page 4.

On 31 December 2016 the doors finally closed on our London Millbank headquarters, and we are now settled into the Ball family and getting acclimatised to the time difference with our US corporate colleagues in Broomfield, Colorado.

Like me, do you find yourself saying, “It took me ages to find it” or “I just can’t lay my hands on it right now”? Age UK have produced a free booklet to help. It can also be a valuable aid for a family member in an emergency. See page 3 on how to obtain your copy of the LifeBook.

Finally, ever-increasing print and postal charges have prompted a review of our publications. Orbiter is now an annual publication in March and still includes the features you are used to seeing, with the pension payment dates laid out for the whole year on page 7 and the change of details form now integrated, rather than a separate pull out. You will continue to receive your Report to Members later in the year and, remember, our Plan website provides latest news and useful information.

I hope we maintain your interest in our publications and until next Orbiter in March 2018, I wish you a happy and healthy year ahead.

The months seem to have flown by as I welcome you to another edition of Orbiter

With a million-and-one things to keep track of, it can be easy to mislay important documents and information. Age UK has produced a free booklet where you can record all sorts of useful details to be kept in one safe place – this includes everything from who insures your car to where you keep the TV Licence.

The LifeBook can help you to be more organised and could be invaluable to a family member or a friend if they need to find important information about you in an emergency. Divided into the following sections it is intended to be completed and updated at your own pace:

For your own protection, don’t list your bank account numbers, PIN or key security information such as passwords in the document. Keep it in a safe and secure place, but remember to let someone you trust know where you keep your LifeBook. That way it will help those who manage your affairs should you become unable to do so.

The free LifeBook is available in a booklet or in digital form by email for you to store and complete on your computer.

A familiar face heads the teamWe said our fondest of farewells in December to Lindsay Hawkins, who had been Head of Pensions & Benefits and Secretary to the Trustee since 2014.

That responsibility now falls to the familiar face of David Hewitson who has been appointed Head of UK Pensions and Secretary to the Trustee.

Readers may recall that David celebrated 30 years with the Company last year and has spent the last 19 of those years as Pensions Finance & Investments Controller.

We are sure you will join us in congratulating David in his new role, and wishing Lindsay all the very best for the future.

Ball reports 2016 resultsOn 2 February 2017 Ball announced its full-year 2016 results. Highlights include:

• Full-year and fourth quarter US GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) earnings per diluted share of $1.39 and 8 cents, respectively, vs full-year and fourth quarter 2015 results of $1.99 and 39 cents, respectively.

• Full-year and fourth quarter comparable earnings per diluted share of $3.49 and 87 cents, respectively, vs 2015 results of $3.48 and 80 cents, respectively; 2016 results reflect higher year-over-year share count.

• Solid global beverage and aerosol can demand, and contribution from the Rexam acquisition, drove the increase in comparable operating results.

• Aerospace contracted backlog ended the year at $1.4 billion. To support growth in the business, including the year-over-year doubling of contracted backlog, the company will expand its Westminster (Colorado) aerospace manufacturing center during 2017.

• Company reaffirmed its 2017 and long-term financial goals.

John Hayes, chairman, president and chief executive officer, said:“Following a very complex and rewarding year, our 2016 comparable results were in line with our expectations. We had previously discussed that the momentum in our existing business combined with the addition of our acquisition would generate sequential momentum as we moved into 2017. This momentum continues to build in all of our businesses and our packaging products are excellently positioned to support our customers’ plans to market sustainable packaging to all generations for any occasion. We once again reaffirm our financial goals for 2017 through 2019 and expect $150 million of transaction-related synergies to be recognised in 2017 with at least another $150 million expected by the end of 2019.”

“The company is on course to deliver improved free cash flow, EVA (Economic Value Added) dollar growth and comparable diluted earnings per share growth of at least 20% in 2017. We are fully executing upon our post-acquisition plans with the completed closure of the former Rexam headquarters, the closure of the Charlotte, North Carolina, regional support center slated for mid-2017, and additional transformative process and footprint work slated for the second half 2017 and beyond.”

Remember to raid those change jarsLast Orbiter featured the introduction of new UK coins and banknotes. With the plastic £5 note and 12-sided £1 coin now in circulation, householders are being urged to spend or bank their old paper £5 notes and round £1 coins before they cease to become legal tender.

There are still 165 million of the old £5 note in circulation and after 5 May 2017 they will stop being accepted in shops, and high street banks/building societies may refuse to exchange them, although the Bank of England are obliged to accept them, as Bank of England notes retain their face value for all time. If the branch is not willing to accept your old notes then you can exchange them at the Bank of England in London either by post or in person.

About £1.3 billion worth of coins are stored in change jars across the country, and the round £1 coin accounts for nearly a third of that.

You don’t have to frantically smash your piggy bank open or raid the parking change purse now. You have until 15 October 2017 to get those round coins changed or deposited into your account and, although your bank/building society will be able to accept some for you after that date, there may be limits in place. It’s therefore worth making a note of this changeover date in your diaries.

And what happens to them once they are withdrawn? The old paper £5 notes are recycled using a composting treatment and the round £1 coins are melted down and turned into shiny new 12-sided £1 coins.

Small change - big impact!

Dominic Wise is on hand to help with any pension queries or related concerns you may have and can be contacted on 01732 835128. However tax affairs are personal between you and HMRC and are, therefore, matters which Dominic is not able to assist with.

We receive instructions to change tax codes direct from HMRC. There is no need to inform us of tax code notifications. If you have any questions or wish to query your tax code, you will need to contact HMRC direct, using the details on page 11.

It is important that you keep your combined P60 payslip you received in March in a safe place. It shows the proof of your total Rexam pension instalments paid in the tax year which you may need if you are required to complete a tax return at a later date.

You will receive a payslip in April, but then from May to March you will only receive a payslip if your net pension changes by more than £1 in any one month.

The change of details form will continue to be included in every issue of Orbiter and is also available to download from the Pensioners section of the Plan website. Many pensioners miss out on financial benefits that they are entitled to and have paid for through their taxes and National Insurance contributions.

Websites such as www.entitledto.co.uk and www.turn2us.org.uk have free-to-use, confidential benefits calculators. By answering a series of questions online, at your convenience, you can find out whether you may be entitled to any financial help. It’s best to make sure that you have information on your income to hand, so that the tool can accurately calculate means-tested benefits (those which take your income into account).

If you find that you may be entitled to claim, local organisations and charities such as the Citizens Advice Bureau and Age UK are able to offer guidance and support with completing claims forms.
