PRESIDENTS REPORT The football roller-coaster !!!!!!

Football truly is a game of ups and downs, just ask any Richmond or St. Kilda supporter! I experienced this first hand last weekend on a very personal level. Coaching the U/18 girls and seeing them sing our club song for the very time after a memorable win was indeed a high I did not think possible - it was brilliant. One hour later following an ambulance to hospital with your son inside (the result or a careless and crude sling tackle) was one almighty low having me question if playing football was really worth it.

A few things I would like to highlight:

1. The best thing our club has ever done for the safety of our players is to have a trained paramedic attend each home game. To have the expertise of Jono Roland on site from Colbrow Medics gave my wife and I confidence that our son was receiving the best care possible. A stressful and worrying time was made so much easier thanks to him. I will be taking this further with the EFL and bring forward a motion requesting all clubs to make this mandatory. Families need to feel assured their son or daughter is safe regardless of whether they are playing at home or away.

2. Sling tackles are a blight on our game and all players need to be educated in correct tackling techniques.

3. Winning does not matter - player safety comes above everything

4. We have some amazing people in our club and I thank all of them for their support and best wishes throughout this week.

So is football worth it? I cant answer this question for everyone only draw upon the experience of the last day or two. The girls were amazing; brave, resilient and stepped out of their comfort zone. Some qualities I really want for daughter. My son will miss a few weeks of footy but the show of support from our football club has shown why belonging to a caring community is so important.

My answer is yes. Football is a roller-coaster filled with tremendous highs and lows - so is life. I am glad my family is on this journey with yours and part of a community that cares for each other.

Go Rams!!!

COACHES COMMENTS

It was a great high pressure performance from the whole team this week against South Belgrave. Coaches requested the boys to be first to the ball, hit their targets and increase their handballing throughout the game. Once again, they performed their roles exceptionally well.

A special thanks to Jorge, Isaac, Jack R, Jack W-S, Rupert, Sam, Ben and Ashton who swapped their jumpers to play a quarter each for the other team. This made the game all the more enjoyable for all the boys rather than sitting four of our players on the bench.

The focus for next game will be maintaining positions on the ground.

Thank you to all the parents who got involved in the various roles on the day.

Well done boys, you can all be very proud of yourselves – keep up the great effort!

COACHES COMMENTS

RD 3 we hosted Waverley Blues at Ram Stadium. After a sluggish start by us, Wa-verley were well and truly on top. To the boys credit we pegged them back over the next 3 quarters to finish very close at the final siren!!!! It's been very pleasing to see the lads carry out some simple game day instructions and get the rewards on the field!! Well played fellas, looking forward to the lightning premiership this week.

ENTIRE TEAM EFFORT

COACHES COMMENTS

A great start to the game with loads of pressure, linking handballs, good forward penetration

and drive from the entire back half. Unlucky to only get the two goals, but to keep them to a

single point was a perfect way to come into ¼ time.

A laps in concentration and poor skills resulted in letting a big side take full control of the

game at the half way mark.

A regroup in the rooms at half time and a few positional changes saw all of the first quarter

positives back again. Pinz & Cracky driving off the half back, Noah and Matty staying wide and

using their leg speed on the wings and forward pressure were highlights in taking back con-

trol of an entertaining quarter of footy.

Absolute HUNGER for the ball was the theme and that’s what the kids gave in the last, high-

lighted by two match saving marks by the big Killa at full back and a composed run off half

back by Coxy when there was only 4 points in it with just minutes to go.

The coaches could not have been more pleased with the entire teams effort today.

COACHES COMMENTS

Sunday’s game against top side Forest Hill saw a greatly improved performance from our team. Forest Hill has won all

its games by large margins and it would be expected that they are promoted to C grade at the completion of grading.

For our team to be so competitive all game against such a strong side is a real credit to them, as is the ability to

bounce back after a really tough game the week before.

The first quarter saw the majority of play in Forest Hill’s forward line but our backline, with support from our midfield,

did a great job to play tight and restrict them to only 2 goals. In the second quarter the game opened up and more

goals were scored. We managed to score a goal from some good ball movement and hard work by our forward line to

lock the ball in; this was a good reward for a strong first half performance.

We continued to battle hard in the 3rd quarter but some lapses in concentration allowed Forest Hill to score 4 goals.

However, we managed to get back on track in the last quarter and our hard work restricted the opposition’s run and

we also scored our second goal; the result of an attacking passage of play off the half back line.

At the start of the game the team was asked to make a strong effort in its attack on the football and hunger for the

contest. Focus was also on the defensive aspects of the game in particular tackling, tight checking in the backline and

midfield and pressure on the opposition at all times. We were very pleased to see the team respond well in all of these

areas which lead to a very good performance.

It was one of those games where the scoreboard did not fully reflect the evenness of the contest. The kids should be

proud of the effort on Sunday. If we continue in that vain for the remainder of the season the results will follow.

COACHES COMMENTS

The team was set for another challenge this week against a strong Heathmont team who were also unde-

feated and had previously played in Division A. It turned out to be a great test of character for the team as

they had to fight for the win right down to the final minute of the game.

The boys started the game well to take a lead into half time but Heathmont hit back hard in the 3rd quarter

to outplay our side and take a lead into the final change. To the boys credit they responded to the challenge

and increased their desperation for the contested ball and work hard together to claw the game back for a

narrow victory.

In these hard fought matches it’s worth calling out our defenders who worked very hard and stepped up in

the final term to create stoppages and rebound from defence. Then, when the clock ticked down the team

worked well under pressure with plenty of 2nd and 3rd efforts to hold on for a slim victory.

COACHES COMMENTS.:

A week is a long time in football!!!!

After a week 1 reality check the U/18 girls came out this week and showed how much they learned in their short time in footy. After losing the first quarter the girls came out in the second quarter and kicked two quick goals to have Donvale on the back foot. A minor lapse late in the third quarter and a few more worry-ing moments in the last saw our girls victorious by 8 points. A truly remarkable turn around and an inspiring rendition of our club song !! I am amazed how quickly the girls have improved and learned many things about the game they have only ever watched from the other side of the fence. Thank you to all the support-ers who turned up for our first home game.

Congratulations to all players who showed enormous improvement this week. After training in the hail during the girls our girls have truly found how tough yet rewarding footy can be.

Best players: I should simply say the whole team because all the girls stepped up to another level this week!
