Narrative Structure

By Nathan Francis, Demi Wrenn, Shannon Webb.

Page 2: Rough plot on film

We have chosen to follow the 5 stage narrative structure because our ideas fit in well with this theory. The theory consists of 5 main parts:

Exposition – Setting scene, introducing characters.

Development – Situation develops, more characters introduced.

Complication – Something happens to complicate lives of characters.

Climax – decisive moment reached, matter come to head, suspense high.

Resolution – Matters are resolved and satisfactory end is reached.

5 Stage Narrative Structure

Page 3: Rough plot on film

During the opening scene, we have decided to do a couple, Ava and Noah, being introduced first. They are a couple sitting in a park at night time when it’s reasonably dark, and suspense will build where the audience will know something is going to happen. The swings will slightly swing, the roundabout will slightly spin and the girl will be visibly scared. The boy will laugh and joke around and pan the camera around him and you can see the clown behind him. The boy jumps and drops the camera and you hear screams and shouts and see the boy dead on the floor, the girl is frantically trying to run and ring her dad at the same time but she trips and the clown goes to pick her up. The shot switches to the dad picking up the phone and just hearing screams until the girl is muffled and the shot switches back to the clown walking away with the girl and at the end the title will appear.

This sets the scene and introduced the characters such as the dad (who is the chief of police), Ava (the chief of police’s daughter) and the Clown (the murderer).

Exposition

Page 4: Rough plot on film

Situation develops by showing the audience that the clown does this to a lot of girls, not just this one, he has a lot of captured girls. It would also show his living arrangement and where the girls are kept, e.g the basement.

It would also show that there is not only one clown, but multiple clowns that are killing the males and capturing females.

More in depth detail on the character of the dad as chief of police. The case will be closed because of lack of evidence but the dad attempts to take it into his own hands.

Development

Page 5: Rough plot on film

The clowns find out find that the chief of police is trying to find them and rescue the girls and his daughter so they stalk the house until they know that the dad has gone out and then 4 of the clowns surround the house late at night knowing that the wife is the only one in. They then enter quietly and stab the wife. They leave her body in the middle of the floor with the knife still in her and there are finger prints on the knife.

Complication

Page 6: Rough plot on film

The knife was sent to forensics and they know the general area of where the Clowns could be, the dad goes to the general area and looks everywhere, he looks through all windows and through a gap he sees three clowns inside. The dad pressed the signal to alert the police and they being to head to him. The clowns all turn and look at the gap where the man is and he jumps back a bit and the fourth clown was standing behind him, grabs him and drags him inside.

The clowns proceed to beat him and stamp on him until he is close to death and the police arrive at the same time as the clown is about to stab the chief of police.

Climax

Page 7: Rough plot on film

The police shoot the clown in the face that was going to stab the chief of police. The other three clowns who were unarmed were cuffed and arrested.

The films ends with the police kicking down a locked door and finding all of the captured girls and the daughter of the chief of police runs out and hugs her dad, she is visibly bruised from being beaten.
