There can be no straight road home.

A young man is released from a Sydney prison, his hands empty, his identity gone. He catches a southbound train out of town, then hitchhikes west. He hasn’t been home for fifteen years.

For days Frank rides the highway through an unforgiving landscape, surviving on what he finds and the kindness of strangers. As he edges closer to a home he struggles to remember, his boyhood looms. Out of the past, something is coming that will tear through his fragile hold.

Chilling, haunting, suspenseful, Gone is a journey through one man’s splintered world.

Jennifer Mills is the author of the novel The Diamond Anchor (UQP, 2009) and a chapbook of poems, Treading Earth (Press Press, 2009). She was the winner of the 2008 Marian Eldridge Award for Young Emerging Women Writers, the Pacific Region of the 2008–9 Commonwealth Short Story Competition, and the 2008 Northern Territory Literary Awards: Best Short Story. Her work has appeared in Hecate, Overland, Heat, the Griffith Review, and Best Australian Stories 2007, and she has a short story included in the Scribe New Australian Stories 2 anthology (pub: Feb 2011). Jennifer lives in Alice Springs.

the sparrows of edward streetelizabeth stead

A unique fictional view of a little-known corner of Australian history.

Sydney, 1948: When Hanora Sparrow and her teenage daughters, Rosy and Aria, fall upon difficult times they are forced to leave their comfortable middle-class existence. With little more than the suitcases they carry and a few pounds between them, they must move to a housing commission camp on the outskirts of the city and live under much-reduced circumstances.

While the prospect of life in a ramshackle tin shed is grim, these women soon learn that they are not alone. As they befriend other camp residents such as Mr Sparkle, who’s had to leave his family behind to look for work in the city, Mr Gardiner, the war hero who never recovered, and the women of the laundry circle who are the eyes and ears of the camp, the Sparrow women discover that resilience and good humour might just be their salvation.

Inspired by the author’s own life experience, The Sparrows of Edward Street recreates this unique perspective of post-war Sydney with a clear eye and sharp wit.

Elizabeth Stead is Sydney-born and the niece of acclaimed 20th century novelist Christina Stead. From childhood, Elizabeth was greatly inspired by her grandfather David George Stead, pioneer, naturalist, conservationist and storyteller. Elizabeth has published short fiction and four previous novels, The Fishcastle, The Different World of Fin Starling, The Book of Tides and The Gospel of Gods and Crocodiles. The Sparrows of Edward Street is her fifth novel.

the China Garden Kristina OlssOn

‘The China Garden propels Kristina Olsson into the front ranks of Australian novelists.’ Matthew Condon, novelist and journalist

Over two hot weeks one summer, cracks emerge in the veneer of a small coastal town.

Laura has returned home for her mother’s funeral after years in exile, only to discover her upbringing was based on a lie; elderly Cress, the moral compass of the community, conceals her own vices; while young Abby walks the streets, her bruises wrapped in baggy clothes.

When a newborn baby is found abandoned in a backyard, this dramatic event pierces the lives of these three very different women. But it is gentle Kieran, an unlikely guardian, who knows their secrets and watches over them.

As their lives collide, what is buried can no longer remain hidden. The China Garden is a captivating story about betrayal and its echoes across generations.

Kristina Olsson is the author of the novel In One Skin (2001) and the biography Kilroy Was Here (2005). The China Garden (2009) received the 2010 Barbara Jefferis Award for its empowering depiction of women in society and was also shortlisted for the Kibble Literary Award. Kristina’s journalism and non-fiction have been published in the Australian, the Courier-Mail, the Sunday Telegraph and Griffith Review. She has worked extensively as a teacher of creative writing and journalism at tertiary level and in the community, and as an advisor to government. She lives in Brisbane.

the BoundarynicOle WatsOn

An award-winning crime novel that breaks new ground in Australian fiction.

Long ago Meston Park in Brisbane’s West End stood on the boundary of the city’s curfew for its Aboriginal population – they were not permitted to enter the city limits at night. When the park becomes the proposed site for a multi-million development, the traditional owners, the Corrowa, vow to fight it and file a native title claim. Hours after rejecting the claim, Justice Bruce Brosnan is brutally murdered in his home. Days later the developers’ lawyers are also killed.

The Corrowa’s matriarch, Ethel Cobb, believes the murders are the work of an ancient assassin who has returned to destroy the boundary. While the investigation forces Detective Sergeant Jason Matthews to confront his heritage, Aboriginal lawyer Miranda Eversely battles a sense of personal failure at the Corrowa’s defeat. How far will it take her to the edge of self-destruction? When the premier is kidnapped, the pressure intensifies . . .

In this gripping crime novel, Nicole Watson cleverly fuses contemporary urban life with ancient spiritual beliefs.

Nicole Watson is a member of the Birri-Gubba People and the Yugambeh language group. Nicole has a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Queensland and a Master of Laws from the Queensland University of Technology. She is currently a senior research fellow at the Jumbunna Indigenous House of Learning, University of Technology, Sydney, and is also a columnist with the National Indigenous Times.

and the

a novel

Cuba, 1959: In the final year of his life, errol Flynn found time for one last adventure. The dashing star of many Hollywood films had always longed to be a real hero. Fidel Castro was the genuine article, and now he

was looking for fame. What each man had the other wanted and, as revolution raged around them, the stage was set for an explosive encounter.

Cuba is on the brink of revolution and errol Flynn is there making what will be his final film. When they meet, errol is involved in the latest in a long line of relationships with under-age women, while Fidel is ready to march triumphantly into Havana after overthrowing the Batista government. Within days of the coup, errol is chased out of Cuba with a firing squad and Fidel hot on his heels.

Featuring a full cast of Hollywood movie stars, beautiful women, Cuban revolutionaries and new york mobsters, Errol, Fidel and the Cuban Rebel Girls is the story of two men at the opposite ends of astonishing careers. It is a story with two heroes ... but there is only ever room for one.

Based on true events, errol, Fidel and the Cuban Rebel Girls recreates one of the

20th century’s great untold stories.

home and away:in search Of dreaMs at the hOMeless WOrld cupdave bidini

A moving insight into how sport has the power to change lives.

Every four years millions of people all over the globe unite to watch their favourite soccer team battle it out for the glory of winning the World Cup. But there’s another World Cup that isn’t quite as glamorous: the Homeless World Cup (HWC), an annual tournament for poor and dispossessed players from around the world.

In 2008 award-winning author and filmmaker Dave Bidini accompanied Homeless Team Canada to the HWC in Melbourne, Australia. What Bidini found was the ultimate underdog sporting event, teeming with stories of humanity and twice as relevant to our times as any modern big-ticket spectacle.

By meeting players from the barrios of Mexico City, the shanties of West Africa and the streets of North America, Europe and Australia and witnessing their disappointments, frustrations and triumphs, Bidini comes to understand the true meaning of this tournament.

Home and Away shows, firsthand, the power of sport to transform the lives of those living on the edge.

Dave Bidini is the author of eight books, all of them critically acclaimed and many of them bestsellers. He has made two award-winning films and has several new films in development. Dave has written for a number of newspapers and magazines, including The New York Times, Village Voice and The Globe and Mail. For 25 years, he was a founding member of Rheostatics, Canada’s most beloved independent band; now he tours with his new group, BidiniBand.

triBal sCienCe: brains, beliefs and bad ideasMiKe Mcrae

When facing off a woolly mammoth, a few spear-wielding friends are more helpful than Darwin’s views on natural selection.

Mike McRae argues that humans didn’t evolve to do science, but to get along in tribes. Survival depended more on social connections than understanding the universe, but somehow science – the quest for objective knowledge – developed anyway. Tribal Science looks at where science came from and why it works despite the quirks of our tribal minds.

Mike shows how our tribal brains are driven by beliefs and biases and the need to belong, and how this social way of thinking meddles with our capacity to think critically. From here he charts an intriguing history of science, from the emergence of critical enquiry among early philosophers, to the development of the scientific method, major scientific discoveries, and our current dependence on technology. He looks at how our tribal brains manipulate science, and why we still cling to beliefs and bad ideas – from ‘clinically proven’ cosmetics to bogus medical treatments and other miracles of pseudoscience.

Fun, fascinating and original, Tribal Science will get you thinking about what really makes you tick.

Canberra-based science writer Mike McRae started his science career testing other people’s poo in a Queensland medical laboratory. Today he writes and illustrates CSIRO Education’s popular ‘Science by Email’ newsletter while producing radio documentaries for ABC Radio National. Mike is also a regular on the public speaking circuit discussing all things science.

stories from the waysidereverend GrahaM lOnG

A stunning photographic tribute to Sydney’s Wayside Chapel – its staff, the visitors and Wayside’s friends and neighbours.

In this unique book, the Reverend Graham Long of The Wayside Chapel describes the place on Hughes Street that many street people call home. This beautifully illustrated book celebrates the place, the people who work within its walls and the visitors for whom the Wayside is a welcome support system.

Four Australian photographers – Gary Heery, Grant Matthews, Hugh Stewart and Paul Westlake – captured the Wayside during the chapel’s last two months, before it was demolished to make way for a new building. The four also mentored three of the visitors in the art of photography. The result is a collection of often-surprising images revealing both the emotional and physical territory of the landscape around the Wayside.

Accompanying the photography is a collection of emails sent by Graham Long to members of the Inner Circle, his name for a loyal group of supporters relating the humour, joy, pain and drama of everyday life.

Includes a Foreword by NSW Governor Marie Bashir AO and a childhood memory by Wayside Ambassdor and actor, Claudia Karvan.

the Band that played on: the extraOrdinary stOry Of the eiGht Musicians WhO Went dOWn With the titanicsteve turner

An epic story of music and courage that coincides with the 100-year anniversary of the Titanic’s launch.

When the Titanic collided with an iceberg on April 14th

1912, the eight members of the ship’s band had already retired for the evening. Still, they put on overcoats and came out to play in the lounge. When most of the First Class passengers had taken to their lifeboats, the musicians moved to the deck and continued to play as the ship sank. One surviving passenger said: ‘Many brave things were done that night, but none were more brave than those done by men playing minute after minute as the ship settled quietly lower and lower in the sea.’

The music they played served alike as their own immortal requiem and their right to be recalled on the scrolls of undying fame. But who were they? What journeys brought them to this deck on this icy ocean? Who did they leave behind?

Music historian and biographer Steve Turner delves into the tragedy of that fateful night through the lives of these brave men, revealing eight unique and inspiring portraits of bravery.

Steve Turner is a respected British music biographer and author of numerous books, including Amazing Grace: The Story of a Hymn; Trouble Man: The Life and Death of Marvin Gaye; The Man Called Cash: The Life, Love and Faith of an American Legend; Jack Kerouac: Angelheaded Hipster; A Hard Day’s Write: The Story Behind Every Beatles’ Song; and Van Morrison: Too Late to Stop Now. His articles have appeared in Rolling Stone, Mojo, Q and The Times. He lives in London.

Biography meets science in this absorbing story of two of the most glamorous and influential pioneering women of mathematics.

The feisty, aristocratic Émilie du Châtelet was the first person outside Britain to translate Newton’s revolutionary Principia; together with her lover, Voltaire, she turned her château into a dazzling centre of Enlightenment science and literature. A century later, Mary Somerville – born into the lower middle classes in Scotland, and entirely self-taught – became a world authority on Newtonian mathematical physics; her scientific accomplishment (and her charm) made her a legend in her own lifetime. Connected by their shared passion for mathematics, Mary and Émilie provide a unique, first-hand perspective on the unfolding Newtonian revolution in mathematical science that proved crucial in defining the way we live and think today.

In Seduced by Logic, Robyn Arianrhod shows how the evolution of modern mathematical science is intimately connected with the evolution of intellectual and political liberty. It is not only about mathematics and science, but also literature, philosophy, politics and love.

Robyn Arianrhod is a writer and mathematician (she is Adjunct Research Fellow in the School of Mathematical Sciences, Monash University). Her first book, Einstein’s Heroes: Imagining the world through the language of mathematics, (UQP, 2003) has been published in the UK and the US, and has been translated into French, Japanese, Korean and Turkish. It was shortlisted for the Age Book of the Year for Non-Fiction and the Victorian Premier’s Prize (first book of history).

ashes in the airali alizadeh

Alizadeh finds grace, wit and fire in this latest volume of poetry which explores themes such as fatherhood and migration. It ranges from the Tehran of Alizadeh’s childhood to the Australian coast of his teenage years. From the opening poem’s hymn to mobility and renewal to the elegiac ending, Ashes in the Air sparks with wisdom and energy.

‘This intense and beautiful book follows the trace of air-borne ashes across the blinded worlds of the present. Alizadeh’s powers of technique ruffle the veils of thought and affect.’ Justin Clemens

‘A poetry of watchfulness . . . upon the crucial questions of what it means for a language to speak truthfully, to witness or to fabricate, and to what end, and to what ultimate good.’ Louis Armand

Ali Alizadeh was born in Tehran in 1976 and migrated to Australia in 1991. He graduated with Honours in Creative Arts from Griffith University, Gold Coast and holds a PhD in Professional Writing from Deakin University, Melbourne. He has taught at universities in Australia, China, Turkey and United Arab Emirates, and has also worked as street performer, hair-wrapper, and delivery driver. He is a writer of poetry, fiction, creative non-fiction, drama and literary criticism, and this is his sixth book. He lives with his wife and son.

Listen. The night is darkthough it’s amazing how much lightpretends otherwise - the starscould be hidden by clouds but thisstreet and advertisement messagehoodwinks us into believingour fate is otherwise. We are alone.

Parts of Us holds in balance a quiet maturity with a vital energy. Ranging from sonnet sequences to long lyrical meditations, dramatic monologues to more confessional works, these poems are imbued with verve, curiosity and elegant inquiry. The collection is marked by an almost self-elegiac strain, an unflinching imagining of one’s own death, and a sense too of love fading, which serves as a brave and powerful corrective to the idealisation of some love poetry written by men about women. In the light of these themes, the lively ‘Adelaide Lunch Sonnets’ acquire additional weight and resonance. These poems are as sensual as figs that, soft as flesh, burst ‘to reveal that secret place where taste is lost in all the rich darkness of their heart’.

Poor Doris, she was like an uprooted tree / swirling through the eye of a tornado, one viewer feels, / an aquatic Dorothy Gale in a gale. Then /she married again and again, but America / is sleeping safely with its secrets in the Western night.

Radical revisions, mistranslations and multilingual dealings: in Starlight, John Tranter destroys and rebuilds works by poets including Baudelaire, Mallarmé, Ashbery and T.S. Eliot. The back story of modern poetry is vigorously interrogated, though the narratives are contemporary and the action takes place in the arena of the here and now. The atmosphere crackles with colloquial energy and the dialogue undercuts itself with a dry wit.

Tranter’s restless craft is evident in the service of a complex and free-ranging style in this brilliantly playful collection.

nine lives: pOstWar WOMen Writers MaKinG their MarK susan sheridan

A new perspective on some of Australia’s favourite women writers.

In the decades after World War II, the literary scene in Australia flourished: local writers garnered international renown and local publishers sought and produced more Australian books. The traditional view of this postwar period is of successful male writers, with women still confined to the domestic sphere. In Nine Lives, Susan Sheridan rewrites the pages of history to foreground the women writers who contributed equally to this literary renaissance.

Sheridan traces the early careers of nine Australian women writers born between 1915 and 1925, who each achieved success between the mid 1940s and 1970s. Judith Wright and Thea Astley published quickly to resounding critical acclaim, while Gwen Harwood’s frustration with chauvinistic literary editors prompted her pseudonymous poetry. Fiction writers Elizabeth Jolley, Amy Witting and Jessica Anderson remained unpublished until they were middle-aged; Rosemary Dobson, Dorothy Hewett and Dorothy Auchterlonie Green started strongly as poets in the 1940s, but either reduced their output or fell silent for the next twenty years.

Nine Lives offers a fresh and lively view of mid-twentieth century Australian literature and the women writers who helped to shape it.

Susan Sheridan is Adjunct Professor of English and Women’s Studies at Flinders University, South Australia. She has published widely on women’s writing, feminist cultural studies and Australian cultural history.

speeCh matters: GettinG free speech riGhtKatharine Gelber

Why is Australia’s current attitude towards freedom of speech harmful to democracy?

Australia is the land of the ‘fair go’. But does this attitude extend to freedom of speech? Unlike the US, Australia has no Bill of Rights to protect our right to free speech, yet most Australians take this right for granted. In Speech Matters, political analyst Katharine Gelber shows why many of Australia’s laws and policies, supported by the wider public, are actually harmful to democratic participation in politics.

Gelber investigates a wide range of political expression to see how we value free speech: from different uses of the national flag, hate speech and anti-terrorism laws to protest, campaigns against corporate actions and art. She considers the laws and policies that regulate behaviour alongside the views of everyday Australians about these issues. What she finds is a political culture that is failing free speech. Our laws allow powerful companies to silence dissent while making peaceful protests difficult to carry out.

Speech Matters tackles these controversial issues head-on, providing compelling reasons for why we should protect the types of speech that give everyone a voice in deciding how our country is run.

Katharine Gelber is an Associate Professor of Politics in the School of Political Science and International Studies, University of Queensland. Since 2004 Gelber has been investigating how freedom of speech manifests in contemporary Australian politics, and actively engaging in public discussions on such topics as anti-terror legislation and academic freedom.
