Kia ora Happy New Year Rotorua and welcome to the 11th edition of Heart of the City News.

2015 is going to be another huge year as the city gears up to host a plethora of amazing events and supports some exciting new projects and developments - highlighted in more detail in this publication.

Our inner city has progressed considerably in the last 18 months and I would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone who has contributed in a big or small way in helping us get closer to achieving Rotorua’s 2016 priorities and 2030 vision for the inner city. Although there’s still plenty to do, we can celebrate what has been accomplished to date and acknowledge that we’re moving in the same direction together.

I would like to recognise the Inner City Focus Group and Raising the Bar collective for their incredible leadership, energy and commitment. 2014 saw the inaugural Tulip Fest and Light Rotorua campaigns get off the ground and a big focus this year is on growing these events. And a big thanks to Rotorua Police, City Safe Guardians, Castlecorp and City Clean team for keeping our inner city safe and beautiful.

So with council and the community working together, here’s looking forward to a prosperous year.

Heart of the City NEWS - January/February 2015

Is the future of Rotorua’s inner city important to you? The Inner City’s Revitalisation Strategy is now available and requires your feedback. This strategy is a living document representing various community recommendations about what and how Rotorua can achieve a vibrant and thriving city heart that attracts more people and activity. It also highlights when these initiatives should be completed. It is critical that all tenants and building owners read the strategy and understand the action plan because as well as being informed about what’s been proposed, we’re seeking wider community opinions and any further suggestions by the end of January.

You can pop into the Ideas Store on 1225 Tutanekai St (before 8 January), City Focus or the Civic Centre to pick up a copy or download it by visiting rotorualakescouncil.nz and search Inner City Revitalisation Strategy.

If you would like to discuss your idea in person email [email protected]

INNER CITY REVITALISATION STRATEGYTATAU TATAU - WE TOGETHER

- -

The revitalisation strategyThere are five focus areas that have been identified:

1. Focused infrastructureFor the 2016 priority, the focus of infrastructure will be on a smaller footprint of the inner city with boundaries of Fenton-Amohia-Rotorua Central-Lakefront. Working with the Regional Council and the New Zealand Transport Agency is imperative to build a strong inner city area that provides greater public focus. Green spaces can provide havens for campervan parking and cycleways. The CCTV network is in need of an upgrade to ensure safety across the inner city. Public toilet facilities require upgrade and need to be located where people gather.

2. Strengthening the spineThe community has highlighted confusion for visitors about what street is our main street. The Tutanekai Street spine is severed in many places as well as being difficult to access. Pedestrians are also not a priority. Tutanekai Street must be the main shopping (high street) linking Rotorua Central through Eat Streat to the lakefront. The wide distribution of retail has weakened value.

3. Shaping a creative environmentThe inner city needs to celebrate and reflect our history, diverse culture, unique lakeside location and our vision for the future. Strong vistas and viewpoints need to be strengthened to create reference points throughout the city. To do this, artwork of various forms can be installed as signal points. A creative “must-see” attraction has been noted by many stakeholders as an important opportunity. Theming of the city by way of flags and banners, entrance features, and lighting are all part of a creative inner city environment.

4. Increasing business attraction and encouraging investmentConsiderable work has been carried out in recent years to understand and quantify Rotorua’s existing economy and the inner city business drivers, and to identify areas for growth.

Initiatives to market and promote the inner city need to be developed, in conjunction with wider business attraction and investment programmes, such as live, work and play.

5. Building strong community partnershipsIt is recognised that a single individual or organisation cannot revitalise the inner city. All parts of our community including government, non-profit organisations, charitable organisations and community stakeholders need to continue to work in partnership to deliver our shared goals.

The Opus Consultants “String of Pearls” Concept drawn in 2006 was paramount to achieving some existing initiatives such as Eat Streat and the Night Market. This concept is still referred to today and underpins the emerging strategic plan

Heart of the City NEWS - January/February 2015

How you can gain more parking for customersThere are several inner city businesses demonstrating initiative to ensure more parking is made available for paying customers. House of Elliott on Pukuatua Street for example, has a clause in its employment contracts prohibiting staff parking in the front of its premises. Instead, staff members are encouraged to park on the outskirts of the inner city where free parking exists, or to take advantage of the Pukuatua St Car Park Building - great value where vehicles can come and go between 6am-11pm for no more than $4 per day, be parked undercover and have 24 hours surveillance.

If you would like to discuss the Pukuatua St Carpark arrangements for businesses or employees email [email protected]

New resources to tell your business story Businesses can download a range of new images and videos about New Zealand for their marketing purposes from the business toolkit on the New Zealand Story website nzstory.govt.nz. The updated site features:

• 18 infographics providing evidence of our prominent position globally;

• 31 presentation slides to help present your own business story; and

• Access to business case studies and a growing collection of over 150 image and video assets.

Are you cranked up?The countdown to hosting the world’s largest mountain biking festival is well underway.

March 25 – 29 2015, A gathering of the bike-minded, Crankworx Rotorua brings together the world’s downhill, slopestyle and enduro legends, with the Superfans, the rising stars, the industry’s innovators and the next generation of mountain bike riders for five days of contests, concerts, culture and cranking.

Crankworx Rotorua marks the third international event for Crankworx, adding to the current festivals in Whistler and Les 2 Alpes, France. Crankworx Rotorua has been secured for the next three years (2015 – 2017). About 750 riders will take part, 80% of whom are likely to be overseas riders from the US, Canada, South America, Europe, Japan and Australia.

Nowhere else will you see competitors of this calibre gathered in one place at Skyline Rotorua Mountain Bike Gravity Park.

Building the best trails that challenge the world’s greatest riders as well as provide excitement for the thousands of spectators is proceeding well. All trails are due for completion by early March 2015.

Events during the week of Crankworx Rotorua include the Australasia Whip Off Champs, Rotorua Pump Track Challenge, Dual Speed and Style, Downhill, Crankworx Rotorua Enduro (as part of the Enduro World Series) and the kickoff of the Crankworx Triple Crown of Slopestyle.

There will also be the Bikes and Beats Music Festival featuring New Zealand’s top artists and for families – Kidsworx as well. To get your tickets visit Ticketmaster and to find out more about this high profile event go to crankworx.com/rotorua.

Now on wheelsCouncils City Safe Guardians and Parking enforcement officers now have the ability to regularly cover the inner city with the introduction of bicycles to get around. This includes a greater presence in Government Gardens and surrounding tracks through to Kuirau Park and the Aquatic Centre.

The use of bicycles will allow the team to be more mobile and responsive. There will be obvious health and environment benefits too.

38 years in the inner city and still going strongHouse of Elliott is a family business that has been servicing the Rotorua community and surrounding districts for 38 years. To show support to all the players and visitors to Rotorua for the weekend and promote the event in the inner city the Rugby Union is providing free bunting and signage to 26 retail/hospitality businesses in the inner city to represent each team.

Each business which registers and dresses its window from the 5-19 January will also receive free tickets to watch the games.

Have your say on best use of performing arts centre The Sir Howard Morrison Performing Arts Centre (formerly the Rotorua Convention Centre) is an exceptional facility in a prime location and we’d love to see it developed into a thriving performance hub, bustling with activity and vitality.

We want to hear what types of events and activities locals would like to see and be part of, and we want to ensure we have the right facilities to cater for those events. A steering group to redevelop the performing arts centre has been formed, with a proposed development concept plan available for viewing at the Ideas Store on 1225 Tutanekai Street (this week), and on the council website rotorualakescouncil.nz – search creative communities.

Richard Marshall, Performing Arts Director, Rotorua Lakes Council

Be part of history in the making - voIunteers required for CrankworxThe Crankworx Rotorua team are looking for enthusiastic people – bike-minded or not – to fill 250 positions and contribute to the world’s biggest mountain biking event, ultimately cementing Rotorua’s place on the world stage as a premier mountain biking destination.

Volunteer days run from March 19 to March 30, including event preparation and set-up, actual event competition days and final pack-up. Volunteers must be available for at least three days over the two-week period, including two days during the event itself.

Despite the nature of the event, there is no prerequisite to be a mountain biker yourself or even own a bike for that matter, with a variety of positions available – from indoor to outdoor, social to a little more solitary.

Shifts range from two to 12 hours, with a preliminary schedule due for release three weeks prior to the event confirming shift lengths and crew assignment. The minimum age to volunteer is 16, while under 18s are required to submit a waiver signed by a parent or guardian.

Potential volunteers can register online on the Crankworx website. For more volunteer information and FAQs go to crankworx.com/rotorua/info/volunteers

Tak Mutu, Crankworx Rotorua Event Director

For the creative lovers Creative Fibre National Festival of Fashion, Fibre and Fun will be hosted for the first time in Rotorua on 9 -12 April 2015 – the first week of the school holidays. The event was last held in the Bay of Plenty in 1986, in Tauranga and promises to be a fantastic showcase.

We are expecting 300 members to register for the four days, and aiming to attract more than 100 day visitors. Door sales for the general public will be $12 allowing admission to the national exhibition, foyer activities, and trades hall. Foyer Frolics will include demonstrations of spinning, weaving, knitting, crocheting, and opportunities for visitors to have a go. The Neck Warmer Challenge entries will be in the foyer and the Tutors’ exhibits on the mezzanine of the Sir Howard Morrison Performing Arts Centre. There are 27 traders registered for the trades hall including Rotorua’s Creative Yarns & Knits, all selling specialised equipment and supplies for fibre artists.

The National Exhibition is a ‘must see’ and will be open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Tickets for the Runway Show, Saturday afternoon at the Blue Baths, will be available after 20 March.

The 15 tutors for our workshops and lectures to be held at the SHMPAC and the Arts Village include some very prominent New Zealand, US, Australia and UK textile artists: Joan Ruane from Arizona teaching cotton spinning, Marion Hera-Gorr from Australia who owns Beautiful Silks Australia, Leilani Rickard from Okere Falls whose designs have been shown at NZ Fashion Week, Raewyn Penrose from the Coromandel who runs felt-making workshops in NZ, Australia, and Germany and has won many awards for her fashionable garments, as well as Cynthia Read from Cambridge, who was commissioned to knit a shawl for Prince George.

Inner city businesses can support our event by creating window displays of craft materials and objects and displaying our posters and flyers. For more details email [email protected]
