Lots of children have participated in the Avalanche of Activities school holiday           programme which to date, has consisted of kite‐making sessions and hair‐styling  advice and tips from the lovely ladies at St Bruno Salon.  Coming up are A Plethora of Planting pointers (11am on 2nd May) and a demonstration by the Rotorua Martial Arts Academy Inc. (11am on 3rd May).  We’d love to see you there! 

MAY ‐ NZ MUSIC MONTH 

Every May, we have celebrated NZ Music Month in some way, along with radio stations, television and other media, so watch out for our display of great NZ music.  We’re pleased that local band, The Thermaleles have agreed to play in the library at various times during May and are a real treat to listen to.  

In Music, Stage & Screen on the first floor 

From hiring a manager and recording demos to signing  contracts and protecting your music, I’m with the band explains everything.  Key figures in the NZ music industry share their inside knowledge and experience to help  

everyone whether you’re just starting out, or have some experience.  Written by the three Chunn brothers:  Mike Jeremy and Barney, all have extensive experience in music, bands, recording, music journalism and music publishing making this a must‐read for anyone aspiring to a music career.    

Mike Chunn was a founding member of Split Enz and Citizen Band.  He also managed Sony Music         Publishing.  Jeremy Chunn has played in bands in NZ, Australia and Europe.  He has written about music for Rolling Stone magazine.  Barney Chunn is the music editor of Salient and plays original music with his band, The Tin Soldiers.

YOUTH WEEK 4th ‐ 12th May in Rotorua Lots of organisations, schools and business get behind Youth Week which is a great opportunity to highlight everything that is available to our younger     community members.    In the library we have our own teens area where we keep most of the books and resources aimed at this age‐group.  There are also study tables and room to spread out your books or meet with friends.

The iconic Rotorua Marathon is gearing up for it’s 49th year on 4 May 2013.  However its humble beginnings go back as far as 1965 when it was initially called ‘The Fletcher Challenge Marathon’.    Jack Foster was a local champion runner 

and four times winner of the marathon in 1970, 1972, 1973 and 1975, even though he didn’t take up running until he was 32, an age when most athletics careers are nearing an end.   

At the age of 37 Jack was a world‐class marathon runner and at 38 he              represented NZ at the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh.  When he was 39 he set a world 20mile track record (1:39:14) and was placed 8th at the Olympic games in Munich at the age of 40.  At 41 Jack  set a world masters marathon mark (2:11:18) which lasted sixteen years and in 1974 at  the age of 42 he won a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games in Christchurch.  He then went on to win the Honolulu Marathon, compete in the Montreal Olympic Games at age 44 and at age 50 ran a world marathon record (2:20:28) for his age group.    

Sadly Jack Foster died on 5 June 2004 at the age of 72 when his bicycle collided with a car in Rotorua.

 COMING in JULY Grandma Story  After putting her grandchildren to bed, a grandmother changed into old slacks and a droopy blouse and           proceeded to wash her hair. As she heard the children getting more and more rambunctious, her patience grew thin. Finally, she threw a towel around her head and stormed into their room, putting them back to bed with stern warnings. As she left the room, she heard the three‐year‐old say with a  trembling voice, "Who was THAT?" 

We’re pleased to confirm that Celia Lashlie, author, researcher and social commentator will be giving a talk at the library at the end of July.  Watch this space for more details.

SHORT BIOGRAPHY  PRIZE of $1,000 up for grabs 

The Rotorua Short Biography competition is an excellent motivation to write.  It could be about a family member, an acquaintance or perhaps, someone you have admired.  You are limited to 6,000 words so while not a book, it still could be about 20 A4 pages in double spacing. (See www.wordstopages.com)  Don’t let this put you off though as you may be able to do justice to your chosen person in fewer words.   Final judge will be local historian Phil Andrews, a seasoned writer himself with many local histories to his credit and a Queen’s Service Medal for services to  history.  With a 50‐year career covering writing, teaching, archiving and services with historical organizations, Phil is well placed to  recognize well‐researched local writing and we look forward to his involvement.  Remember that the library is a good source of both guides to writing and Rotorua history, should you require it.  Ask any of the staff if you want help to find what you need.  Selected biographies will also be published on Kete Rotorua, a website devoted to storing people’s memories of Rotorua.  The winning entry will be    presented with a cheque for $1,000 at a special presentation function in August.
