Dear District Governors,

In this month we witnessed the devastaon in Vanuatu, and acknowledge and applaud all who are trying to help the

people affected. The district governor for Vanuatu is DG Bruce Rasmussen based in New Zealand.

Congratulaons are in order for the Foundaon team in D9600/9630 (Australia) on holding the very first “Million Dollar

Dinner” in this region for the benefit of The Rotary Foundaon. The Dinner was held in Brisbane on February 28 and was

a5ended by over 200 guests. The keynote speaker was Past Rotary Internaonal Vice President Anne Ma5hews. The object

of the dinner was to promote the idea of Bequests to The Rotary Foundaon, as well as increasing the number of Major

Donors in the two Districts. This was achieved with a5endance being roughly 50/50 across the two districts; and

recognion recipients were also split by the same rao. In the evening well over 30 Bequests were recognized with total

bequests value exceeding US$1.5M.

Other inserts herein include messages from our Director Tumangan who is planning a trip to see most of the Australian

Districts in August /September this year.

We welcome PDG Jenny Coburn to the RI office. She has already fi5ed in well with the regional team. Jenny has included

a once off table in the newsle5er on new clubs.

We are seeing strong growth in TRF contribuons. We hope to see that connue unl the end of the Rotary year. As you

There are two things that I consider as unique to Zones 7B and 8. One is the extensive applicaon of club visioning. The

second is the incorporaon of Rotary projects and networking with other non-government organizaons. These result in

successful replicable big events like the observance of Internaonal Women’s Month, the creave approaches to engaging

the public in End Polio Now, and outdoor fellowship acvies. These enhance Rotary’s public image as well. Perhaps, a

benchmarking exchange can be scheduled between zones someme in the future.

Since we are all working towards membership growth and membership retenon, I encourage all Rotary Leaders to help

club presidents use the movaonal tools available: (1) The Rotary Internaonal Awards like the 5 Avenues of Service

Citaon and the Club Builder Award (2) the e-learning modules where one gets a cerficate aKer compleon; (3) for the

new generaon Rookie Rotarian, discovery of Rotary’s internaonality through My Rotary, discussion groups, Rotary

Showcase and Rotary Fellowships.

This month we recognize Rotaractors and it would be desirable to ask the new generaon Rotarians to mentor the

Rotaractors professionally. It was also a welcome sight to see former Rotaractors organizing youth summits, especially

touching on promong integrity in the workplace.

And of course, our greatest source of inspiraon is that publicaon powered by a vision and has served 103 years. This is

The Rotarian (TR), the flagship magazine of Rotary Internaonal. This was put together in 1911 by Chesley Perry,

secretary of the Naonal Associaon of Rotary Clubs, and Harry Ruggles, the fiKh Rotarian. If you are not a subscriber to

TR, why not visit the Rotary website or Google TR to catch the latest issue or any of the back issues and learn a lot about

Rotary’s heritage and contemporary history.

We recognize the zone coordinators for the newsle5ers they provide. I googled D3410 and found my NUGGETs accessible.

Thank you. D9800’s Networker incorporates in each issue interesng human interest project stories from the Rotary

Internaonal website.

Also, I congratulate all the Rotary Clubs - the club presidents, club administrators and club bullen “editors” – for uphold-

ing the weekly publicaon, one of the tough aspects of our Rotary Club operaons. Your role in member retenon and

internaonal understanding cannot be understated. April is your month! We owe you a lot. Thank you.

All these resources enable “a great leader to inspire people to have confidence in themselves.”

RI SOUTH PACIFIC & PHILIPPINES OFFICE REGIONAL BULLETIN

ANNUAL FUND GROWTH CONTINUES

A strong February performance keeps our region well in front of the 2013/14 numbers and it’s great to see

improvement right across the board. Our region (including Indonesia) is currently 15.3% up over YTD February last

year and that’s a pre5y fine effort considering the weakening of the local dollar against the US dollar experience

in both Australia and New Zealand. Australia is 22.3% up, The Philippines 22% up and New Zealand 8.4% up.

Indonesia is down around 39% over last year but the effort is definitely going in and they are quickly catching on

earlier lost ground. A few comments on each country follow:

The Philippines – Some truly remarkable performances here and none be5er than district 3850. DG Jude Doctora

has fired his troops up magnificently and his growth of 155% hasn’t happened by accident. Not far behind is

District 3790 with a growth of 142% and DG Dennis Go reckons he can not only hold that growth for the year but

expand it even further. District 3790 has more than doubled its YTD 2014 figure and DG Sammy Pagdilao Jr. and

his team have done a great job because they are currently siSng on a growth of $124,000 and that’s a very big

number. The ‘powerhouse’ districts 3800, 3810 and 3830 are all travelling well and will finish the year in a strong

posion. Good growth also from districts 3870 (+79%) and 3860 (+14.6%). This will easily be the best year ever for

The Philippines!

Australia – Another strong month in March keeps the YTD performance well in front of last year. Key to their

level of improvement are districts 9520 with growth of 723% and 9455 up 224% but strong performances from

many other districts have contributed to the end result. District 9685 connues its role as one of the country’s top

dollar providers (up 25% over YTD February last year) and they’ll finish number one again in 2015. Great work

from DG Ian Sco5 and parcularly DRFCC Tony Castley who connues to set new records year aKer year!

Excellent growth also from districts 9700 (+70%), 9500 (+46%), 9800 (+32%) and 9640 (+31%). The one shadow

over the Australian performance is the fact that 9 of the 21 districts are behind last year so there’s sll work to be

done. Australia can finish the year with all districts in front of last year but to do that will require a very strong

commitment from all 21 districts.

New Zealand - The February performance was excellent but February last year was even be5er so it just makes

the comparison for YTD February look a li5le worse. The ‘star’ performer so far is district 9940 with a YTD growth

of 179% so DG Anthony Sco5 and DRFCC Graeme Blick are well and truly on the move. Other districts are no

doubt gearing up for a strong finish to the year and it would be good to see some of that money coming in sooner

rather than later. It always tends to come with a bit of a rush at the end of the year and maybe that’s a bad habit

that could be broken.

Summary – As a region we are in good shape to break the $10 million barrier for the first me but it really needs

energy, commitment and a strong willingness from clubs to be part of what we are, and part of what we do. We

spend a lot of me helping people from all corners of the world to a be5er life but funding is crical if we are to

connue to do those things. All Rotarians care about helping others but without funding our hopes and dreams

will come to nothing. (see page 4 & 5)

EASY WAY TO GIVE ( AUSTRALIA)

Australian Rotarians would have noced that the March edion of Rotary Down Under contains our new contribuon enve-

lope to present an easy way of giving. The envelope is geared to The Australian Rotary Foundaon Trust so all contribuons

$2 and above are tax deducble. In addion to this, the choice of how the money is used is completely at the discreon of

the donor. There’s provision to put it into the SHARE system where half comes back to the district in three years as DDF, or it

can go to Polio or any one of the six Areas of Focus. It’s all about following the contributor’s passion.

STRONG GROWTH IN PER CAPITA RESULTS

The excellent growth in the YTD February Per Capita figures tend to suggest a closer than normal finish to the

three annual contests this year. While we sll have four months to complete the year, the numbers are suggesng

another overall improvement and that can only lead to more good being done in the world. As a region, our YTD

February result is $58.58 against a ‘par’ of $66.66 and that’s some 15% be5er than last year at this stage. Com-

ments on each Zone follow:

Zone 7A Philippines and Indonesia – This one will be a real fight to the end with up to eight districts shaping up to

take the top spot. Current leader is Indonesia’s 3420 with a highly credible $118.46 but with four Philippines

districts on the charge and already over $100, anything could happen. Three district in the 70’s and 80’s shouldn’t

be forgo5en either because super-human things happen towards the close of the year.

Zone 7B New Zealand – The usual low numbers here because it all seems to happen over the last two months of

the year. Two districts in parcular look interesng with neck-to-neck results but we can’t write any one of the six

districts off just yet. Districts 9910 and 9940 are currently leading the way but New Zealand finished over $90 last

year. I’m beSng they can get to the ‘magical’ $100 mark this year.

Zone 8 Australia – Pre5y interesng results here with district 9520 and 9455 being the runaway leaders at this

stage. $144.69 and $112.61 are really good numbers to have aKer only eight months but can they last the dis-

tance? There are three districts ‘hovering’ in the $80 area and all three finished well above $180 last year. The

next three finished well above $100. What this says is that big changes occur over the last three months so

nothing is ever a ‘safe bet’ in this race. (see page 6)

PAUL HARRIS FELLOW SUBMISSIONS To ensure that Paul Harris Fellow (PHF) cerficates and pins are received on me, we advise clubs and districts to

submit the forms well in advance. While our normal level of service will see dispatches within a week, the busier

mes towards the end of the Rotary year generally result in a two to three week me frame so our advice is simp-

ly to plan ahead.

If you would like to submit a PHF request along with a new donaon to The Rotary Foundaon, please complete

the Recognion Contribuon form and send it to your Foundaon representave (Philippines, Indonesia or New

Zealand) or to our office in Parrama5a (Australia). This should be done on the same day you transfer your dona-

on. If, however, you would like to request a Paul Harris Fellow by using available credit points, please complete

the Recognion Transfer Form, and again, send it to your Foundaon representave.

PHF recognion consists of a lapel pin - with or without a cerficate. Addionally, it is possible to order a PHF

medallion at a cost of US$ 15 (plus currency conversion and taxes where applicable). If you would like to order

the medallion, please contact [email protected] or order through SHOP on the RI website.

ORDERING PHF MEDALLIONS

It’s now a well-known fact that the PHF medallion does not come with the standard recognion package and if

required it must be ordered. We can handle orders of this nature through the Parrama5a office but a much sim-

pler way of going through the process is to order on line. All you need to do is connect with My Rotary on the

R.I. website, then click on MANAGE, PRODUCTS & LITERATURE and then SHOP. This will take you to the Amazon

site and then use the search panel with “PHF Medallion”. From there on it’s pre5y straighZorward and payment

is made with your credit card.

END POLIO NOW MOVIE NIGHT FUNDRAISER ( Australia)

Across Australia in an esmated 100 cinemas Rotarians and their guests a5ended the screening of this

year’s movie fundraiser, The Second Best Exoc Marigold Hotel. Last year clubs raised over $75K with

the movie event and all expectaons are that this year the result will be over $100k. We have already

had feedback that some of the screening a5racted over 400 guests.

This is the seventh year that we have organized this kind of event to assist in the fundraising for the

eradicaon of Polio. As each year goes by the event becomes bigger and more successful. It is a combi-

naon of selecng a movie that will be a “want to see” movie as well as the enthusiasm of the Clubs

that want to support this kind of event.

In May we will again meet with our Movie partner, Tweneth Century Fox Studios and select the mov-

ie for next February. Our aim is to not only find a movie that is suitable for our target audience, but

find a movie that is to be released as close as possible to the Rotary Birthday of February 23.

Thank you to all those that a5ended and thank you to all those who assisted in organizing the event in

their local community and making this the most success movie fundraising ever.

(see next page for latest figures on polio stascs).

BIG BOOST TO POLIO FUNDING

The February results saw a big jump in polio funding but in the main it was due to a significant contri-

buon in district 9630. That was a very large giK from an extremely generous donor but it all counts

the same way when it’s used to work on the complete eradicaon of polio.

The challenge we all face now is to ensure funding connues to come in so that we can finish the job.

This should be the personal challenge of every Rotarian in the world because we started it – and we

should be the ones to finish it. It really is a queson of dollars and it simply cannot happen if the fund-

ing isn’t there. We currently have Australia 41% ahead of YTD February last year, New Zealand 27%

ahead, the Philippines 61% behind last year and Indonesia 28% behind last year. Our overall regional

performance is a growth of 19% YTD February.

Maybe the me is right to check through those Monthly Polio Reports and idenfy which clubs have

not yet given to this great program this year. Every club should be right behind it because it belongs to

every club and it belongs to every Rotarian. Governors should think about geSng those lists done and

sit down with your District Foundaon Chair and District Polio Chair who will start calling those club

that haven’t yet acted. The End Polio Now program is far too important to leave to chance and strong

acon will always create results. (see page 8)

PILOT EXTENSION – CLUBS INVITED TO PARTICIPATE

INNOVATIVE & FLEXIBLE CLUB PILOT

Closing date for clubs who would like to join in is 31 March, 2015

The RI Board of Directors is expanding the Innovave and Flexible Club Pilot from 200 to 1,000 clubs beginning 1 July,

2015 through 30 June, 2017.

Feedback from Rotary surveys and focus groups has shown that prospecve and current members wish for flexibility to

become or stay involved with a Rotary club. The Board would like more supporng data on how allowing clubs flexibility

affects membership and club operaons.

The Innovave and Flexible Club pilot, will evaluate the impact of various changes to meeng format, leadership struc-

ture, membership qualificaons and requirements on a club’s ability to sustain and increase membership, implement

successful programs and service projects, and support The Rotary Foundaon. To parcipate in this pilot, clubs must:

• Have chartered before 30 June, 2010

• Be in good financial standing with Rotary Internaonal

• Have at least 20 members

• Agree to parcipate for the full dura$on of the pilot from 1 July, 2015 to 30 June, 2017 and to comply with re-

ports requested by Rotary Internaonal.

• Register with and maintain records through Rotary Club Central and My Rotary.

• Not be parcipang in the 2011-17 membership pilots.

Online applica$ons are due by 31 March, 2015

The deadline for submi?ng a pilot applicaon form is 31 March, 2015. District and club officers will be nofied of clubs

selected to parcipate in June, 2015. Please contact [email protected] with any quesons.

Payment Reminders

RI SOUTH PACIFIC & PHILIPPINES OFFICE REGIONAL BULLETIN

1. Please always email us at [email protected] if you have paid/contributed via direct deposit,

electronic funds transfers (EFT) or telegraphic transfers. This way, we will avoid having any

unidenfied deposits siSng in our accounts that are unallocated properly.

2. Please use your club number as a reference to any payment done electronically. Club names

are too long to be captured in our bank statements as the fields have character limits. If we

end up with “Rotary Club of C” as an idenfier for example, that would not narrow down the

possible depositors at all!

3. Invoices are in US Dollars because this is the official currency of Rotary Internaonal. Please

convert this to Australian Dollar, New Zealand Dollar or Philippine Pesos as necessary. These

are posted on MyRotary using the following link:

h5ps://www.rotary.org/myrotary/en/exchange-rates

4. For all clubs except those in the Philippines, under Bank/Electronic Transfer payment

instrucons, the following bank accounts (based here in Australia) are in the respecve cur-

rencies.

5. For any issues related to RDU Subscripons, please contact RDU at

subscrip[email protected] or +612.9633.4888.

6. The collecon period is now only up to 30 April 2015. Kindly ensure prompt pay-

ment of club’s membership dues.
