“As members of the Rotary Club of Chicago celebrated Rotary’s 105th anniversary at a downtown hotel on 23 February, the city’s historic Wrigley Building was illuminated in the background with an urgent message: End Polio Now.

The Wrigley Building joined several other iconic landmarks worldwide, each lit with an anniversary message or the three words representing Rotary’s commitment to rid the world of the crippling childhood disease.” (Rotary Club of Chicago marks 105 years By Ryan Hyland, Rotary International News -- 24 February 2010)

A new Rotary Year is about to begin and I am in the process of getting everything in place for my year as District Governor. In that process I have had several opportunities to interact with many Rotarians at their club meetings. I was amazed to see the accomplishments of our clubs.

President-elect Ray Klinginsmith announced the Theme for the coming year in our International Assembly in January; Building Communities – Bridging Continents. If we look at the Theme it explains everything we do in our own communities and around the world. It also tells the world what we do.

I will continue to emphasize the fact that the Clubs are the pillars of Rotary and we, the Rotarians, are responsible to keep those pillars strong. Without clubs and Rotarians, there is no Rotary. The Rotary Foundation is synonymous with Rotary. Everything we do through the Rotary Foundation translates into saving lives, either directly like polio eradication and clean water, or indirectly like our program on Conflict Resolution through our Peace Fellows and Ambassadorial Scholars. On average, one dollar will save one child in the developing countries. So, I would like all Rotarians to decide how many children they want to save individually, and translate that into dollars, as a basis for their individual contribution to the Foundation. I cannot see any one of us saying that we don’t want to save a few lives at that price.

I hope to put our efforts together to make the clean water projects initiated by many of our clubs into a major undertaking at the District level with matching grants from the District and possibly the Rotary Foundation. In many of these countries the best water available is from dirty ponds. Diseases contracted from polluted water account for the majority of the preventable infant deaths in those countries.

We are a very unique organization; no other organization in the world does everything we do. I look forward to my visits to your clubs to strengthen our ties and to make 2010-11 the best year in history. We already have the best start among all the clubs in the world with the Installation Ceremony officiated by incoming RI President Ray Klinginsmith on June 3 at the Riverview in Simsbury. Please do join us for an inspiring evening that day.

Best wishes to all.

ByLaw ProposalsProposal to amend District 7890 bylaws submitted by Prasad Menon, DG 2010-2011 and Sue Klock, DG 2011-2012.

Last year an extensive revision of the district bylaws, with the exception of Article 2 relating to financial matters, was approved at the District Conference. At that time, “Article 2. Fiscal Matters” was amended to only minor ways to make it consistent with changes being made in other articles. This year DGE Menon and DGN Klock are proposing a revision of Article 2 to improve fiscal practices at the district level. The biggest changes could result from the creation of a Finance Committee separate from the Audit Committee. Aside from that many sections of 2009 bylaws Article 2 remain, just renumbered/rearranged. A complementary proposal to make minor changes in “Article 6, The District Governor” and “Article 7, Committees” is to make them consistent with proposed “Article 2. Fiscal Matters,” and to reflect some actions of Rotary International which will impact our committees. All proposals are available on the District Website (http://www.rotarydistrict7890.org) and will be mailed to club presidents prior to the District Conference in Saratoga Springs.

Proposals submitted by PDG Raymond Chelte

Article 6 – The District NewsletterEach Rotarian will have the opportunity to receive the same newsletter electronically, (instead of by USPS.)

Article 10 – Publication of proposed amendmentsThe chair shall provide to the sitting president of each club by Electronic Mail (delete First Class Mail) no later than March 15th all proposed bylaw changes which will be considered at the conference, including…

Signs encourage crime watch groups – Energized by a rash of fires in December, community leaders in Northampton, MA are pressing on with efforts to establish neighborhood watches throughout the city. The Rotary Club of NORTHAMPTON recently unveiled the model for a set of signs they have purchased urging residents to sign up for watches in their neighborhoods. The signs will be posted at about nine entrances to the city and others will be available at the request of city councilors for their specific wards.

Haiti News

The SALISBURY Club presented a Haiti Benefit Concert in support of Albert Schweitzer Hospital featuring Irish Music, the Paton Family and Friends with special guest World Champion Irish Fiddler, Dylan Foley. The concert was held Sunday, February 7 at the Housatonic Valley Regional High School in Falls Village, CT.

CELEBRATING50th ANNIVERARY

The NEWINGTON ROTARY CLUB recently celebrated its 50th Anniversary at a gala celebration at Indian Hill Country Club where it honored its Charter Member, Charlie Lowe, who remains an active member of the club.

During the evening’s festivities, which were organized by club member Bob Newbold, they received a legislative citation presented by State Senator Paul Doyle. They also received recognitions from Newington Mayor Jeff Wright, from the local chapter of the Shriners, UNICO, the Newington Chamber of Commerce and other various civic organizations.

IT WORKS!Through civil uprisings, monetary instability and administration changes, the well project started by the WESTFIELD Rotary Club has finally come to fruition. Thanks to support of the AGAWAM, AMHERST, CHICOPEE, NEWINGTON, SIMSBURY, SOUTHWICK AND WEST SPRINGFIELD CLUBS, and in partnership with UMass Engineers Without Borders, water is running in Namawanga, Kenya. The hand well was installed and the local Polytechnical School signed on for administration and maintenance of the project. Several hundred community members are already using the well and experiencing improved public health and development benefits in the community.

PUTNAM Rotary Club and the PUTNAM Rotary Foundation were quick to respond with a $5,000 donation to FGSA (Foundation Good Samaritan in Action) a local Northeast CT organization on the ground in Haiti. This donation was matched by a local businessman and his wife. FGSA provides the Haitian people with clean water, vitamins, antibiotics, immunizations and basic medical care.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE WITH A HOT MEAL

For the past three years the KENSINGTON-BERLIN SUNRISE CLUB has provided, prepared and served a hot meal on the first Sunday of each winter month at the New Britain Salvation Army’s Out of the Cold luncheons. The meals are often sponsored by businesses from the community. The Tomasso family has been this season’s sponsor. Approximately 50 people of all ages enjoy the meal each month. The Farmington Interact Club has been faithful in helping to serve and clean up.

Rotary District 78903 Sarah Anne LaneWindsor, CT
