Our new Rotary year is off to a good start. This week, Presi-dent Stephen Bariteau will share his vision and hopes for

this coming Rotary year.

Since January, 2017, Stephen has been Vice President of Strategic Philanthropy with Allina Health. Prior to that he served as President and Executive Director of the Courage Kenny Foundation and Penny George Institute Foundation,

both parts of Allina Health.

Stephen is a native of upstate New York. He is the middle child of two public school teachers. He and wife Karin, a Minnesota native, have been married for 18 years. They have two children and make their home in Bloomington. They are active members of Grace Church in Eden Prairie. They enjoy time together with their extended family; relaxing on the North Shore; and annual trips to New York, Florida, and Indiana. Stephen’s hobbies include home improvement tasks and fishing!

And, Stephen does a great job stringing Christmas lights, just ask Karin.

Guest: Rotarian Doug Stiles

Rotarian Doug Stiles, brother of our own Don Stiles, will join us on July 29th with a piece of Stiles family history. Jonathan Dillon, the Stiles brothers great great grandfather, was a watchmak-er on April 12,1861, and passed on a family tale of a watch he was repairing when he heard that the first shots had been fired on Fort Sumter, which starter the Civil War. Doug’s passion for history and genealogy led him to the Lincoln Pocket

Watch collection in the Smithsonian Museum.

Doug Stiles is a long time Rotarian with the Waukegan Rotary Club. He serves on sev-eral boards including the Salvation Army (30 years), Habitat for Humanity, United Way, Waukegan Public Schools, Chamber of Commerce, and Waukegan Library. He is very

active in his church and is a strong tenor in the choir.

July 15 Review: “District Governor Russ Michaletz”

DG Russell Michaletz, our 2019-20 District 5950 Governor, re-fers to himself as an agent of change and says we can expect to see change at both the International and District levels this com-ing year. What will that change look like? International has a new 5-year strategic Plan with four distinct elements. • Rotary will grow its impact in the world – look for bigger pro-

jects with greater impact, though what comes after Polio Plus is still in the discussion stage.

• Rotary will Expand Participation to not only Members but Non-Rotarians through the addition of new types of clubs - Non-traditional clubs such as passport clubs, teacher focused, eco focused, and community core clubs.

• Rotary will make engagement more meaningful with a more family friendly focus and hopefully less age restrictive for leadership roles.

• Make Rotary easier to do business with. There will be a more liberal Rotary with fewer rules to allow Rotarians to engage in new and different ways.

During Russ’ year his focus will be on enhancing the value of our Rotary membership with the ulti-mate goal of retention – “Retention Russ”! He will be looking to enhance the opportunities for per-sonal development, build our personal brand, and develop trusting relationships. With our motto “service above self” he feels “self” needs to play a bigger role in our Rotary story!

After stints as a college professor, scientist/businessman at Cargill, and high school science teacher, Rod Fisher retired and began to work as a climate change advocate for the Citizens’ Climate Lobby. In speaking to our group, Rod stressed the consistency between advocacy for public actions to com-

bat global warming and Rotary’s 4-Way Test.

Climate change, Rod explained, is caused by atmospheric carbon dioxide’s effect to keep all of the solar radiation heat within our atmosphere, rather than the controlled release that a less carbon-laced atmosphere allows. Since moving to Duluth to es-cape the resulting increases in extreme heat, ex-treme weather, and rising water levels is not a via-ble option for most of the world’s population, the alternative is to encourage public action such as adoption of H.R. 763, currently pending in the U.S.

House of Representatives.

International action is also required, of course, but as the biggest per capita emitter of carbon dioxide the U.S. should take the lead both by re-joining the Paris Accord, and by using one more of the availa-ble options including carbon credit “cap and trade” legislation and market-based pricing that accounts for the “negative externalities” of the source emissions upon the rest of us, and the world. Rod invited members to join one of the “Citizens’ Climate Lobby local chapters” in our area, and to learn more about the pending legislation as well as the organization on its website, https://citizensclimatelobby.org/ .

Our personal news section is Happy Bucks this year. It is shared ver-bally as the Happy Bucks Hat is passed around the room at each meeting. These dollars help support our Youth Exchange Student.

Here are a few items shared these past two weeks.

Many Rotarians donated in honor of our guest DG Russ Michaletz. Doodee Backstrom goes way back with Russ as she was originally in the same club as him. Leah Hughes was happy to intro-duce the new Executive Director at Artistry as her guest. LuAnn Paulet spent some time in Osh-kosh, Wisconsin, reacquainting with a buddy from 60 years ago. Lori Rebers enjoyed the Prior Lake Music Fest. Carolyn Pratt is happy to be taking care of her granddaughter for two weeks. Mark Adkins spent his 60th birthday with his extended family for a week in Stanley, Idaho. Apee Ochudho spent a week in Colorado Springs on vacation. Paul Nieder-berger got great news from his doctor...he can now resume his normal activities after his surgery. Karen Nordstrom was pleased to entertain her family at their cabin for a week. Becky Amble spent a great weekend with her brother and wife from Arizona recent-ly. Diann Kirby shared the sad news that her sister-in-law recently passed away. She also shared the good news that she and Newton spent time sailing on Lake Superior with their best man. And, Stephen Bariteau had great fun with his family and the kid’s

friends at a cabin recently.

Sandhya Gupta shared that she heads back to India this week. Over the weeks she was here, fundraising for Nari Gunjan was successful (about $17,000) and she was able to visit with all her sisters and sisters-in-law during her 4 trips out of town. Karla and Paul Niederberger are celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary. Jim Casserly recently was fishing with his family. He also shared that one of his friends that he has visited with each year for the past 49 years recently passed away. Deb Newman has moved into their house! Lots of mud still. Save the date of August 3 for her fundraiser benefiting the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Pasha, Becky Amble’s son, had a successful week as a counselor at camp, even though a tornado passed through the area. Renée Wilson’s son’s movie, “Into the Ashes” just opened in the Twin Cities and she finally found a dress she was happy with for her daughter’s wedding. Dave Drummond spent time recently in Colorado camping with his twin sons. Bob Erickson announced the wedding of his nephew recently (Dave’s son). Both are professors at the University of Chicago. Dave Senness recently vaca-

tioned in Whidbey Island, Washington. Nick Basil was happy to announce the engagement of his daughter this month.

Distinguished Guests, we are glad you joined us!

Vocational Talk: Renée Wilson

Renée Wilson was the youngest of 14 children in her family. Her parents were first generation Americans. She became an avid reader early in her childhood, around age 3. That habit is still with

her as she loves to read 3-4 books each week. Her favorite being history and biographies.

She is a single parent raising three kids. She has liked to “talk trash” in the past, but now as she

thinks about the Four Way Test, she is working to clean up her act.

Renée has been a Realtor for almost 34 years working with properties from Little Falls to Rochester. She is currently with Edina Realty. Because of her expertise, she is often found mentoring other agents. In her job, she helps price properties and spends significant time using social media to market properties. When she works

with her clients, she is able to concentrate on her client and their needs. And, can provide guidance on the purchase of a property.

Joining Rotary, Renée believes that she is “doing what she should be doing.”

District Rotary Training...ROTARY 101

Do you understood Rotary’s Areas of Service? Its jargon (e.g.,

DGs, DDF, PolioPlus)? The Rotary opportunities in an Area and

District and Zone?

All newer Rotary members (four years or less) are encouraged to

attend a Rotary 101 session at a convenient location and date.

More experienced members who need a refresher course in all

things Rotary are welcome, too!

Watch for additional information and online registration.

Mark Adkins is our newest Paul Harris Society Member Mark Adkins became the most recent Bloomington Noon Rotarian to commit to the Paul Harris Society. A Paul Harris Society member has made the commitment to donate at least $1,000 per year to The Ro-tary Foundation each year that they are a Rotarian. With this addition, Mark is helping District 5950 to maintain its number one position within the US with the greatest number of Paul Harris Society members in a District with 323 members to date. District Governor Russ Micheletz presented Mark with his cer-

tificate and pin.

Youth Exchange

Youth Exchange is a core program of Rotary International, promoting world peace and understanding. All the while, introducing Rotary to youth and host families from our com-

munities and around the world.

We are hosting an inbound female student this year from Japan. We have the initial family

already arranged. WE STILL NEED TWO MORE FAMILIES TO HOST THIS YEAR!

If you would like to be a host family or to participate with our Youth Exchange program as a mentor to our student, please let Past President Deb Newman know. Also, a flyer is

being attached to this issue of the RIB for you to share with your networks. Please pass

along the information.

What are the benefits of participating with Youth Exchange? Our students develop lifelong leadership skills; learn a new lan-guage and culture; build lasting friendships with young people from around the world while living with another family for one year; and becoming global citizens. The benefits for a host family are much the same as above. Host families also take on the challenge of adding another person to their family and the responsibility of caring for that person. Our Youth Exchange program is successful

because of the caring families who volunteer to invite a student into their home.

Youth Exchange Students for the 2018-19 school year.
