“Miracle on Dearborn Street”: The day was February 23rd 1905, the place, a small room in a typical business office on Dearborn Street in Chicago, where three friends were eager to listen to the idea of their lawyer friend, Paul Harris, who wanted to start a new kind of club. “Each of us would have some thought for the welfare of the other fellow” the idea appealed to all four of them. Thus Rotary was born. Rotary came from a lonely man’s hunger for friendship and fellowship. Paul Harris named this club “Rotary” because the place of meeting was rotated at their places of business. Today, Rotary (International) encompasses all the continents, over 35,000 communities and 1.2 million members. Today, Rotary is the first and most Interna-tional of the world’s service organizations, where business and professional men and women provide humanitarian service, maintain high ethical standard in their vocations and help build goodwill and peace throughout the world.

Ian H. Riseley President 2017-18

Rotary Club of Sandringham,

Victoria, Austrailia

Ian H.S. Riseley, of the Rotary Club of Sandringham, Victoria, Australia, is the selection of the Nominating Committee for President of Rotary International in 2017-18. He will become the president-nominee on 1 October if no other candidates challenge him. Riseley says that meaningful partnerships with corporations and other organizations are crucial to Rotary’s future. “We have the programs and personnel and others have available resources,” says Riseley. “Doing good in the world is everyone’s goal. We must learn from the experience of the polio eradication program to maximize our public awareness exposure for future partnerships.” Riseley is a practicing accountant and principal of Ian Riseley and Co., which specializes in advising local and international businesses, and has a strong interest in international affairs. He received the AusAID Peacebuilder Award from the Australian government in 2002 in recognition of his work in Timor-Leste. He also received the Order of Australia medal in 2006 for service to the Australian community. “Governments see Rotary as positive representatives of a civil society,” he says. “We should work with them to advocate for peace and conflict resolution, just as we are advocating for polio eradication.” A member since 1978, Riseley has served Rotary as treasurer, director, trustee, RI Board Executive Committee member, task force member, committee member and chair, and district governor. He is also a former member of the Australian Polio Eradication Private Sector Campaign and a recipient of The Rotary Foundation’s Service Award for a Polio-Free World. He and his wife, Juliet, are Multiple Paul Harris Fellows, Major Donors, and Bequest Society members.

Rob Knuepfer

International Director 2017-2019

Robb Knuepfer joined the Rotary Club of Chicago in 1982, shortly after he left the U.S. Attorney’s Office – where he served as a criminal prosecutor – and then joined the international law firm of Baker & McKenzie – where he was senior partner in their corporate

practice group. Robb became a Chesley R. Perry Fellow (the first RI General Secretary) of the Rotary/One Foundation in 1989, and had the honor of serving as Centennial President of Rotary/One for the 100th Anniversary of Rotary in 2005.

In 1992, he moved to Budapest, Hungary to establish his firm’s Central Europe and Russian offices. While in Hungary, he founded the Budapest City Rotary Club in 1993, which was one of the first Rotary clubs established behind what was formerly known as the “Iron Curtain.” He was elected the first president of that club. He returned to Chicago and Rotary One in 1995, and served as District Governor for the Birthplace District of Rotary in 2010 to 2011.

Robb and his wife Nancy served on a Polio Immunization Team to India in 2011, and have served as President's Representatives to District Conferences in 2012 (Kansas), 2103 (Iowa), 2014 (New Jersey), and 2015 (Florida). He is a trustee of the Rotary One Foundation, a past member of the Midwest PETS Council, the Rotary International Finance Committee, and The Rotary Foundation Investment Committee. He is his District’s representative to the 2016 Council on Legislation. He is a member of the Rotary Global History Fellowship, Room 711 Fellowship, and the Wine and Food Fellowship of Rotary International. Robb and his wife are Paul Harris Fellows, Charter Members of the Paul Harris Society, Major Donors to The Rotary Foundation, and Benefactors to The Rotary Foundation.

In addition to his Rotary commitments, Robb has a distinguished record of public service in government and in the private sector, and served on the board of directors of the Adler Planetarium, Metropolitan Family Services, and the Executives Breakfast Club, among others. He has also served as Chairman of ATO Foundation, founder of the LeaderShape Foundation, and is active in the Hinsdale Community House and Boy Scouts of America, to name a few. He has taught at both the Law School and the Business School at Northwestern University for the past 20 years. He is the author of several books on business transactions.

In 2013, he was knighted by the Republic of Hungary in recognition of his years of service to Hungary, and in 2014 was appointed Consul General of Hungary for the midwestern states in the U.S.

Robb is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Denison University, and earned a Master's degree in Business Administration from Kellogg and a Juris Doctor degree from the Law School at Northwestern University. He received the Alumni Medal from Northwestern University, and the Alumni Citation from Denison University. He is currently a Master of Divinity student at the Univer-sity of Chicago Divinity School.

Robb retired from Baker & McKenzie in 2014, and is now secretary and member of the board of directors of The HallStar Company, a private chemical manufacturer in Chicago with global operations, and serves as Senior Vice President, Leadership Development, Risk Manage-ment, and General Counsel for the company.

And we need to point out that Robb has been married to childhood sweetheart, Nancy, for 38 years, and they have four children, Rob, Jenny, Lauren, and Joe, and seven grandchildren under the age of 5 years old!

Our Core Values

Rotary's core values represent the guiding principles of the organization's culture,

including what guides members' priorities and actions within the organization.

Values are an increasingly important component in strategic planning because they

drive the intent and direction of the organization's leadership.

Service We believe that our service activities and programs bring about greater world

understanding and peace. Service is a major element of our mission. Through the

plans and actions of individual clubs, we create a culture of service throughout our

organization that provides unparalleled satisfaction for those who serve.

Fellowship We believe that individual efforts focus on individual needs, but combined efforts

serve humanity. The power of combined efforts knows no limitation, multiplies

resources, and broadens our lives and perspectives. Fellowship leads to tolerance

and transcends racial, national, and other boundaries.

Diversity We believe Rotary unifies all people internationally behind the ideal of service. We

encourage diversity of vocations within our membership and in our activities and

service work. A club that reflects its business and professional community is a club

with a key to its future.

Integrity We are committed to and expect accountability from our leaders and fellow

members, both in the results of our efforts and in the processes we use to

accomplish our goals. We adhere to high ethical and professional standards in our

work and personal relationships. We are fair and respectful in our interactions, and

we conscientiously steward the resources entrusted to us.

Leadership We are a global fellowship of individuals who are leaders in their fields of endeavor.

We believe in the importance of leadership development and in leadership as a

quality of our members. As Rotarians, we are leaders in implementing our core

values.

All of these core values are reflected in the Object of Rotary and The Four-Way

Test, which we use in our daily lives. They inspire us to foster and support the ideal

of service for developing and maintaining integrity in human relations.

USE OF THE ROTARY EMBLEM AND ROTARY MARKS

Neither the Rotary Emblem nor any of the Rotary Marks may be altered, modified

or obstructed, nor reproduced other than in their complete form. The Rotary

Emblem may be printed in any single color or in two colors. When it is printed in

two colors, it must be reproduced in its official colors of royal blue (PANTONE®

286 Blue) and either metallic gold (PANTONE® 871 Metallic Gold) or gold

(PANTONE® 123 C or 115 U Gold [yellow]). The Rotary Emblem should never be

printed in more than two colors.

The most common improper reproductions of the Rotary Emblem are as follows:

1) not reproducing the Rotary Emblem in its entirety, 2) the keyway is missing

from the center of the Rotary Emblem, 3) the keyway is filled in, and 4) the

Rotary Emblem is partially covered or modified. In order to preserve the integrity

of the Rotary Emblem, District Governors always should reproduce the Rotary

Emblem in its entirety and according to RI Board guidelines for use of the Rotary

Marks and encourage the Rotary clubs in their district to do the same.
