Honoring Larry Williams May 11, 1938 - January 25, 2021

Laura’s father and beloved regular at Twilight

Lawrence Williams, known as Larry and warmly wel-comed to many meetings by Rotary Club of Bakersfield Twilight, passed away peacefully of natural causes on January 25, 2021, in the presence of his daughter, Twi-light member Laura Williams, with whom he lived. Larry greatly enjoyed attending Rotary Twilight meetings and meeting Twilight members, and Larry and Laura were grateful for the warm welcome by Twilight members.

Larry was born on May 11, 1938, in Burbank, California, where he grew up with his younger brother Lloyd. Larry's father, Dwight Williams, was a banker and Rotary Club member and served as President of his local Rotary Club.  Larry graduated from California State University Long Beach, after which he attended and graduated sec-ond in his class from UCLA Law School. Larry practiced as an attorney in Los Angeles, California, and Carlsbad, California, for more than 50 years, specializing in the ar-eas of corporate, tax, and estate planning. Larry was a certified specialist in estate planning. Larry loved practic-ing law and helping his clients. More than 50 years later, Larry could still recall the cases and cited the holdings of court cases he learned about in law school.

Laura will always be grateful that she was able to spend the last 2 years of her father's life living with him and helping to care for him. Larry's children, Laura, Mary, Beth and Matt greatly miss Larry but will always be grate-

ful for their father's love and support throughout his life, keen intelligence, dry sense of humor, integrity, kind-ness, and acceptance of people from all backgrounds and experiences.

Photos: With a beloved pet at Laura’s and in what Laura calls his “MadMen” era photo, handsome in glasses.

TWILIGHT SERVICE PROJECT Benefitting CASA Court Appointed Special Advocates

Submitted by Laura Williams, Community Service Director

Rotary Club of Bakersfield Twilight joined with local Rotary clubs and community members to donate new and gently used chil-dren's books and wish list items to help fill the shelves in the CASA Children's Library that is housed in the newly opened

CASA Clubhouse. The CASA Clubhouse is a beautifully designed and equipped meeting and activity space for the children in foster care served by CASA and the children's Court Appoint-ed Special Advocates. Community Service Chair Laura Williams brought the donated books and wish list items that Twilight members dropped off at Laura's office to the CASA Club-house Open House on March 4, 2021. CASA Executive Director Amy Travis expressed her appreciation to Rotary Twilight members for their generous donations and support of CASA (see picture of Amy and Laura). Twilight member Vince Zaragosa also attended the CASA Clubhouse Open House and made a generous donation of children's books, including the one featured in the photo of Vince at the Open House (the title of the book in the photo, of course, is no reflection on Vince's character). Thank you so much Twilight members for your generous donations!

Together, we can make the lives of children in foster care a little brighter!

Twilight Rotary Club & Kern County Rotaract Global Project Uganda Clean Water Project

Submitted by Vince Zaragoza, Twilight International Service Director

A new clean water source community project in Africa, which was awarded a Rotary District 5240 grant (round two) for $850.00, was recently completed. In a unique collaborative partnership, the DDF 2020-2021 project grant monies, were combined with Rotary Club of Bakersfield Twilight ($850.00) and Rotaract Club of Kern County ($2800.00) funds to benefit Ugandan residents with a clean and sanitary water source that includes establishing a community water committee and a repair savings account, and providing instruction on sanitation/hygiene and ongoing preventative maintenance. The $4,500.00 global grant community water source project now provides a clean

community water source to ap-proximately 500 villagers for the Naibinga community in Uganda.

The global project was made feasible by the international community development non-profit Love Water Incorporated (LWI) which is based in Ba-kersfield, California. Since 2010, LWI ha s pro v ided c lean , potable water in developing countries to over 63,000 people.

Tapa of the Month: March Brought to you by Fun Meister Jeremy Swanson

ESCAVILLADA Marinated Peppers - Tasty Vegetarian TapaThe bright and beautiful Catalonian national colors are present-ed with these tapas: marinated yellow and red peppers. These are also perfect as a side dish to grilled meat.

Ingredients for 4 servings3 red and 3 yellow peppers4 garlic cloves1 lemon200 ml olive oil3 tablespoons of sherry vinegarSalt, pepper, paprika powder

Preparation

Wash peppers and cut in half lengthwise. Cut out the cores. Cut the halves in half again lengthwise. The peppers must now be peeled. Preheat the oven to 220°, place the pepper strips to the side with the skin side up on a lightly oiled baking tray and then grill until the skin blisters. This takes about 8-12 minutes.

Then place the peppers in a medium sized bowl and cover. Let the peppers cool and remove the skin. The resulting water vapor facilitates the removal of the skin.

While the peppers are in the oven, peel the garlic cloves and cut into thin slices.Fry the peeled peppers in olive oil and season with salt, pepper and paprika.Put the oil, sherry vinegar and lemon juice in a bowl and mix well. Then add the garlic slices. Then add the peppers to the bowl so that they are completely covered. Then let them rest in the re-frigerator for about 2-4 hours.Place alternate layers of red and yellow pepper strips in a bowl and serve cold.

Li’s tip: Great served with toasted baguette slices.

Tips and variationsYou can also pickle the peppers easily. Put peppers in a jar with screw cap and then add the oil with the garlic slices until the peppers are completely covered. Seal the jar well and store in the fridge.

The marinated peppers are also good as an accompaniment to grilled meat. Here you can briefly put the peppers in tin foil and let them roast on the grill.Preparation time: about 30 minutes. Cooking time 10 minutes. Leave to rest for 2-4 hours.
