Literacy Month Launched by country music star Dolly Parton and The Dollywood Foundation, the Imagination Library fosters a love of reading among preschool children by providing them with a free hardcover book every month from birth to the age of five. Communities play a significant role in providing a learning environment for children. 1 in 4 children start school unprepared with the basics to succeed. Research shows that the experiences of children’s early years can have strong effects on their future, with implications for their health, development and ability to earn. Rotary International supports and has renewed its partnership with Dollywood Foundation’s childhood literacy program “The Imagination Library”. Essentially the program: - • Fosters a love of reading among pre-school children • By providing each child registered with a free, age appropriate book every month from birth to their 5th birthday. • Australia estimated cost is up to $6.00 per child per month. or approx $72.00 per year.

JOANNA: This week the Rotary Club of Ascot celebrates 45 years of Rotary service and fellowship. Our club

of 28 members is a small part of the 1.2million members worldwide, but over the last 45 years the club has achieved a lot through the five avenues of service as well as raising funds for many projects. Our club has also had the privilege of 4 of our club members serving as District Governors. As a celebration of our history, I present Past Presidents Gren Courtland, Charter member and Rotarian since 1968 and Ronnie Malthouse, a Rotarian since 1992.

GREN : I was the President of the Rotary Club of Ascot for 1975 – 1976 RONNIE: I was the President of the Rotary Club of Ascot for 2005 – 2006 GREN: We were a vibrant club of 47 male members who met for lunch at Ascot Racecourse. The cost of

the meal was $3.00 and annual fees were $30. RONNIE: We were a club of 41 members, being made up 29 male and 12 female members who met for

breakfast at the Belmont Tavern. The cost of meal was $20 and annual fees $220. GREN: As we met for lunch at Ascot Racecourse, we had many visiting Rotarians, both from interstate

and overseas and a variety of interesting guest speakers, including Hon. John Tonkin, then Premier of WA, David Blenkinsop, Director of Festival of Perth, City Councillor Mick Lee, the Commissioner of State Taxation J.R.Ewing, the Bishop of the North West, Bishop Witt and many others.

Page 5: Rotary Club of Ascot Inc BULLETIN · Premier of WA, David Blenkinsop, Director of Festival of Perth, City Councillor Mick Lee, the Commissioner of State Taxation J.R.Ewing, the Bishop

GREN: There were many highlights and worthy projects including RYLA, two blood drives, the very

successful Widows Camp, an Art Competition & Show, a junior citizens award, an outgoing Exchange student, Susan Courtland to Fukoka South Japan, a “My Fair Lady” grooming program for girls at Belmont High School, a Local business luncheon for over 100 attendees, a statewide Rotary Ladies Golf Day at Rosehill Country Club, the continued support of our reactivated Rotaract Club (their Christmas party for the residents of Nulsen Haven was an awesome undertaking), Melbourne Cup luncheon at the Races was always a good fundraiser, whilst Perth Cup Parking could be a fun New Year’s Day event. Our major project however was the financing of humi-cribs for a maternity hospital in India. We also hosted 2 GSE teams that year – one from Oklahoma, USA and one from South Africa.

RONNIE: The highlights for my year were our 2 major International

projects. Gull Petroleum donated $40,000 for a team of surgeons to go to Tanzania, and we had a matching grant with Denpasar Bali for a library and equipment for a school in Pencasari Bali. Our local community programmes were with Grandcare. We had the Christmas Hampers, Kids in the Kitchen and an Easter Picnic. We also had Brains help Drains where we donated Waterwise books to the Lathlain Primary School. These books teach children how our waterways work. Our outbound exchange student was Adam Scott, who went to Belgium. We also continued our sponsorship of the Interact Club of Ascot at Ursula Frayne College and continuing support of Handicamp and RYLA on both a club and District level.

JOANNA: The Rotary Theme for Gren’s year as President was “To Dignify the Human Being by Thought, Will

and Action” and the Rotary Theme for Ronnie’s year was “Service Above Self”.

These themes are well and truly evoked with our current major project in Bakhita as well as the ongoing smaller projects our club continues with. So to celebrate 45 years of achievement and fellowship I ask everyone to charge their glasses as we toast the Rotary Club of Ascot.

Vocational Service Members, Steps toward a successful public Pride of Workmanship Awards Dinner is progressing well. We currently have a commitment from 4 employers and today I spoke to a Belmont accounting firm this morning, not a member, who was very excited about the program and said there is a need for this type of focus on rewarding employees. He was particularly interested in the program for the awards dinner. I appeal to all members to think outside the square about someone/business they know who would be a suitable employer to nominate an employee, and who may offer the opportunity for Ascot to get a new member. On another level, this is an appeal to members to think outside the square about who they might invite along to the award dinner as a guest to show off what we are capable of doing at Ascot Rotary and again challenge them to think about becoming a member. It should be an easy sell on both levels because we have got two very high profile guest speakers and the Belmont local Member Glenys Godfrey will be presenting the awards. Please speak to Max Garry Ronnie or Julia if you have someone in mind. We are looking for up to 10/12 awardees, and we would like at least 80 present at the awards dinner on Wednesday 9 April. I would like to have selected and advised the awardees of their selection by the middle of March some please give this your urgent (lateral thinking) attention.

International Service Mark your diary for Sunday 30th March – Reading Cinemas Belmont. Please refer to the flyer that was sent separately to all of us to further promote and make this fund raiser a success. The latest Lego Movie Reviews, thanks for Stephen for the input. On paper, making a movie based entirely on LEGO sounds like a crazy idea, but writer/directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller have built a career out of thinking outside the box. The last two films they’ve made, Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs and 21 Jump Street, also seemed like bad ideas at first, but Lord and Miller have managed to make each film succeed by letting their imaginations run wild. Not only is The LEGO Movie a perfect example of this, the movie’s also an unabashed celebration of the imagination. You think you had fun with your Legos when you were a kid? Wait until you see what these guys can do with them. This isn’t just a silly movie, it actually has something to say about the imagination of a child and how it’s something we should all cherish as it doesn’t last forever. Eventually, they grow up and their Lego collection is simply just their “collection” which completely misses what makes the toys special in the first place. This is a theme that was also covered in the Toy Story movies, but it’s done here in a way that feels very fresh. The ending, which I will not reveal, really enriches the movie and basically makes a second viewing a requirement. This is a movie that kids will want to watch over and over; luckily, you will want to as well. "The LEGO (R) Movie" is the first-ever, full-length theatrical LEGO (R) adventure. The original 3D computer animated story follows Emmet (Chris Pratt) an ordinary, rules- following, perfectly average LEGO minifigure who is mistakenly identified as the most extraordinary person and the key to saving the world. He is drafted into a fellowship of strangers on an epic quest to stop an evil tyrant, a journey for which Emmet is hopelessly and hilariously underprepared. (c) Warner Bros

Geoffrey Macnab Adults who go to The Lego Movie out of a weary sense of parental duty are in for a very pleasant surprise. Liam Lacey A movie that's fast-paced and silly with enough throwaway clever in-jokes for their accompanying adults to justify a second viewing. Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat A spiritually literate animated film for people of all ages that affirms that everyone is special and everything is truly awesome.

Guest Speaker for Next Meeting: Jodi Rashbrook - Teaching English and Education in India Jodi will be sharing her experiences when she recently spent 6 months in Ladakh (Northern India) teaching conversational English and helping to make the students more confident in speaking to western tourists. Jodi will also talk about a new venture which is starting in Perth (an NGO with their Head Office in Ireland) raising funds for schools in Cambodia and India and more specifically the Perth Branch which is starting to raise funds for an educational village which is underway in Varanasi, India. One day, I told my mother that I'd fallen in love at last and was going to get married.

She was overjoyed. I then told my mother, "Just for fun, Ma, I'm going to bring over 3 women and you try and guess which one I'm going to marry." My mother agreed.

The next day, I brought 3 beautiful women into the house, sat them down on the couch, and they all chatted for a while. Then I turned to my mom and said, "Okay, Ma. Guess which one I'm going to marry?" She immediately replied, "The one in the middle." "That's amazing, Ma! You're right. How did you know?" "I don't like her."
