equipment had literally become a museum piece. For much of the world, the story of polio is a simple one: After years of fear, a vaccine was developed and a disease was conquered. But for some of the world, the story was different. In so many countries, the vaccine wasn't available, mass vaccination was too expensive, or children simply couldn't be reached. While the rest of the world relegated polio to its museums, in these countries, the disease continued to rage – until Rotary stepped forward and said that all children, no matter where they lived or what their circumstances, deserved to live free of polio.

In the years since PolioPlus was launched, the combined efforts of Rotary, the governments of the world, and the Global Polio Eradication Initiative have brought the number of cases of polio down from an estimated 350,000 per year to just a few so far in 2017. But we must reach zero cases, and stay there, to achieve eradication. To do that, we need everyone's help.

On 24 October, we will mark World Polio Day. It is a day to celebrate how far we have come and an opportunity for all of us to raise awareness and funds to complete the work of eradication. I ask every Rotary club to participate in some way in World Polio Day activities, and I encourage you to visit endpolio.org for ideas and to register your event. Whether you host a silent auction, a virtual reality viewing, a fundraising walk, or a Purple Pinkie Day, your club can make a real difference.

This year, our World Polio Day livestream event will take place at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation headquarters in Seattle; you can watch it on endpolio.org beginning at 2:30 p.m. Pacific time. As many of you know, Rotary has committed to raising $50 million a year for the next three years. This amount will be matched 2-to-1 by the Gates Foundation – effectively tripling the value of all money Rotary raises on World Polio Day and throughout the year. Let's all make a difference on World Polio Day – and help End Polio Now.

ith the Mayors pride to wend polio in Nigeria, i personally admonish

all Mayors to key into this laudable project to end polio in the world.Currently, Nigeria is at zero and we are determined to remain at zero, that's why its important for all Rotarians not to relent in the drive to end polio worldwide.

Rotary International President's Message Month of October 2017

Dear Fellow Rotarians,

Th i s i s o u r m o nt h o f ECO N O M I C A N D COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT. It is also a month in the Rotary Calendar that we celebrate our

progress and assess our journey so far on Polio eradicaon. The much-needed awareness and fund raising is emphasized. 24th October this year is our fih annual world polio day celebraon and it's going to be bigger than ever. How ready are we to reawaken everybody and remind us that it is not done yet? How ready are we to raise more money to close the funding gap that sll exist? Our journey to polio eradicaon started in 1979 when the first drop of polio vaccine was dropped into a child's mouth in Philippines. About 350,000 cases were reported annually then but this has been reduced to a few worldwide this year, an amazing progress. This is a reducon of 99.9% from incepon. Sustained zero case is desired for us to achieve complete eradicaon. Rotarians, along with our partners, have helped to immunize about 2.5 billion children against polio in 122 countries. With as lile as $0.60 each of these children have been protected against this crippling disease for life. Although so lile is le to eradicate polio, the world is sll at risk of this crippling and deadly disease. As long as there is one case le, if efforts to eradicate polio is disconnued, the world can go back to square one. It will spread back, hence our relentless efforts to connue our worldwide POLIOPLUS programme. Unl we end polio forever, every child is at risk. What we have to do in our district: This Rotary year we shall have no zero-giving club and no zero-giving Rotarian. In our zone 1, where I am on club visit at the moment, we have started by paying all sergeant at arms collecon on my visit into the clubs polio account of each member. Every Rotarian should endeavour to pay something into his or her polio account. By so-

doing we shall achieve 100% giving to polio which aracts award to us. Our DISCON this Rotary year shall be a celebraon of complete giving to polio. The response is so far encouraging and I am sure we can do it. Remember this is the ulmate team, have that behind your mind in all your acons. There are also several ways to raise funds in our clubs towards polio eradicaon. These include; 1. American aucon. Organise this aucon at least once a month and dedicate the collecon to polio. 2. Put all your sergeant at arms collecon this month together and share to every members polio account with the mulple donor form. Most clubs don't know how to do this as observed during my visit. Please if in doubt contact the district office. 3. Make a mark on the 24th of October. Organise your club's unique polio day celebraon. Parcipate acvely and make a difference in both polio giving and awareness creaon. 4. Parcipate fully in the district celebraon programme already sent to clubs. Awards await clubs on number of parcipants and programme content of each club. 5. Above all register your acvies online. Let the world know what you are doing. Internaonalise your club's polio acvies. Register your event at: endpolio.org. Don't be seen locally alone, go worldwide, please register.

We must not let the euphoria of the polio celebraon make us derail on our economic and community development programmes. Rotary Internaonal members have been on this since incepon. About 800 million people around the world live on less than $2 a day. Nigeria is a great contributor to this stascs. Our duty as Rotar ians is to provide s u sta i n a b l e s o l u o n to p o ve r t y b y s t re n gt h e n i n g l o ca l e nt re p re n e u rs , p a r c u l a r l y w o m e n i n o u r v a r i o u s communies.
