26,102 ROTARY BOOKS

Hashoo Foundation (HF) is contributing to
improve literacy and access to quality education
in Pakistan. HF has initiated many pragmatic
interventions in the field of education such as
Youth Development, scholarship and supporting
out of school children from the marginalized
segment of the society. In succession of this effort,
HF in collaboration with Rotary Books for the
World Program, Second Wind Foundation, and
Rotary Club Rawalpindi, is distributing Rotary
Books and educational materials since 2011, to aid
literacy efforts through educational institutions
and organizations in Pakistan.
In first phase of 2015, Rotary Books for the World
and The Second Wind Foundation donated a 40
feet container filled with more than 26,102 Books
and educational material, ranging from primary
to higher education levels. The books and
valuable research material were distributed to 37
educational institutions, organizations, libraries
and community reading rooms. Reading
connects us to the world of knowledge and
broadens our vision and perspective. Students
and youth can apply this information to enrich
their lives.
Significance of the Programme:HF recognized the role and importance of
educational resources that play a vital role in the
development of a generation, capable of adhering
to the technological advancements and
contributing to the society at large. The
collaboration with Rotary Club is an initiative to
provide platforms to introduce reading sessions
by providing resources to schools and libraries.
This intervention also aims to enlighten parents
about the importance of reading and developing
love for books in their children. An American
writer, Ms. Kate DiCamillo, narrated “the reading
should not be presented to children as a chore, a
duty. It should be offered as a gift”.
The Rotary Books are a charity donation by USA
and Canadian citizens to aid literacy efforts in
Pakistan. The Second Wind Foundation and
Rotary Books for the World Program is the
network by which these donations are transferred
from donors to the Hashoo Foundation and the
Rotary Club Rawalpindi, which agreed to
distribute the Rotary Books to the educational
institutions and organizations across Pakistan.

Participants at books distribution ceremony, Islamabad
We received thousands of different books, which need ample time for sorting. It is difficult to find regular volunteers who commit to help for the required time. New volunteers joining in every weekend makes work inconsistent. Educational institutions in far-flung areas have difficulty reaching the distribution point. In order to overcome this obstacle, HF had to procure support to deliver the books through courier.
It's difficult to develop a schedule with Rotary volunteers and mobilize them on required time.Due to unavailability of communication services and Internet in far-flung areas, it is very difficult to collect pictures and reports in due time.
Challenges and Learnings
